While I would have loved to see him in navy blue, I'm kind of happy it's panned out this way.

1. We can't get screwed by Kinnear because the club could potentially adopt a 'get our man at any cost' approach.
2. We can focus our attention on a more pressing need, going for Williams and throwing out hat in the ring for other mids/flankers; Wines, Crouch, Viney, Graham, Witherden, Saad, Narkle, Caldwell, O'Halloran, currently-unknown-2020-version-of-Neale?!…
3. We might go for Lonie or someone of that ilk to play the small forward role, hopefully this year's Butler, and for a similar price.

Blues turn attention to mids as Papley stays a Swan

Carlton will turn their attention to recruiting a ready-made midfielder after Sydney small forward Tom Papley decided to stay a Swan.

Good. We can obviously get the ball inside 50 enough. We need midfielders who can run both ways and deliver into our forward line without just bombing it to a contest. Either our current small forwards develop more ie. Owies, Fisher, or we bring in a B-grade small forward on the cheap. No need to give up and 1st round picks for Papley anymore.

Add a premium midfielder, like Williams or Kelly to our list. That's honestly all I really care about.

Cripps, Kelly/Williams, Walsh, Setterfield, SPS back in the middle, Fisher is building a very solid midfield.

Glad we have some closure about Papley now rather than the narrative dragging on for another two months.

History shows that there are guys that you can get in that position for far cheaper than a first rounder (or more in his case). Just look at Butler last year.

Not sad about Papley but would have improved us. Add an A grader and a B grade midfielder and watch us rise. Hoping that one of our own can step it up and become a second b-grader who is consistent in midfield. Plus a half back flanker who can break lines and has good disposal. This trade period is more important than people are playing it down to be. I want us to be active but target the specific players we need, we’ve been scattergun to meet our radical list changes and now are at a point through development and turnover to make the most influential ones yet.

I was all in on going for Paps again mid way through the year, but honestly we don't "need" him, we absolutely need an A grade midfielder and a huge focus on accurate kicks of the footy.

Also, please bring back Sav, or take up Fev on his goalkicking coach offer.
