I’ve seen some talk about a future salary cap issue when blokes like McKay, Curnow and Walsh start really hitting their straps and demand a little more cash. Is anyone worried that if we spend all this cash on Williams and say Saad or another potential trade target that it will come back to bite us in the long run? I’d hate to lose any of those blokes that’s for sure!

Curnow already on big money, these new ones are front loaded to allow for the new contracts of our untouchables

The idea is to heavily front load the new recruit's contracts so they still get paid the same, but get most of it when we have salary cap room.

For example, if we sign player x to a 3 year $1mil contract, we pay 700-800k in years 1 and 2 while Walsh, McKay etc. are all on peanuts, and then player x is only on 2-300k when we need to pony up and pay big bucks to Walsh etc. Not the best example but helps explain the idea in it's simplest form.

It's what we've done with Martin and I can only assume McGovern, so I see no reason as to why we wouldn't continue to do so with Williams etc.

That’s actually quite strategical. I can sleep easier now lol
Thanks for clearing all that up.

We should be keeping a close watch on Liam Baker as well, still on there rookie list and would be the small defender we are forever looking for.

We need to go hard and secure Solomon as an assistant this off season, we missed out on Longmuir last year and Sam Mitchell before him, we can not afford another miss this year as this is our biggest area of need, Solomon only just missed out on the Freo job behind Longmuir and would be a great addition to our coaching stocks, get it done Blues this is our most important off season and we need to nail it down.

From what I can gather Baker is rater very highly internally and I doubt Richmond let him go, especially with Houli not getting any younger.

Would love Baker, his poise & skill is something we desperately knead....

What is everyone thoughts on 850k to 9O0k for Williams. Seems very high.

Same price as this guy:

Williams. Bang. Great start to the exchange period.

Elite footballer who will be an unbelievably good addition to this side in 2021 and beyond.

Pace. Skill. Aggression. We need it all. He has it all. In spades.

Very excited by this and so should we all be.

Who's next?

EDIT: Oh, and forget about the money. He'll get lots of it. Yes he'll probably get more than he's worth, particularly next season, and it's that figure most will focus in on. Seriously, just forget about it. We've set ourselves to be able to offer these guys plenty early on, and that's exactly what we'll do.

People don't seem to understand that when signing free agents you're sacrificing cap space for picks/players. Yes he'll be on more than he's worth, but it leaves us with currency to get other deals done. If we were trading for him you can kiss getting Saad or someone similar goodbye.

People understand. They just choose to ignore because bullshit gets more clicks and sells more papers.

It really is simple though: very rarely will a free agent leave for less money. Certainly not a 26 year old in the prime of his career.

I couldn't care less what we pay Williams next year just as it wasn't relevant how much we paid Martin this year. The more the better. Clear as much of those contracts early and we'll be better for it.

We set ourselves up to entice top tier footballers to the club and now that we're in a position to do so we cannot shy away, nor should we be bothered in the slightest that we're paying them overs, particularly in that first season.

We've done what we should and what we needed to do. And this is a great result for the footy club.
