How many HBF do we need at Carlton - back to the old Rogers and Hughes days - we need what Dow/Setterfield Lob etc arent delvioering and that is midfield depth preferebaly in players who aren't half broken before they arrive - this rebuild /reset is looking pretty flaky atm

Freo have to offer more as he is a Melbourne boy...
Yeah I understand, I’m more amused the article says “Carlton is circling Fremantle young gun Adam Cerra with a $750,000-a-year offer in the works, according to News Limitedjournalist Kim Hagdorn.” Then goes on to say “Adam Cerra is being offered something like $3 million over four seasons with Fremantle.

But it seems as though Carlton have countered that with an offer close to $3 million – it’s not as good as Fremantle’s offer of $3 million”

So they’re just sensationalising it and we haven’t offered 750, we’ve offered less

SEN rumours aside,
I just don’t get all the fuss about Cerra.
Just your average run of the mill player ...
At worst he's a good/solid player with positional flexibility that would add a dimension to our largely boom/bust mix of developing talent.
He may not the most exciting recruit but you wouldn't have to worry about him doing his job each week, which IMO, is a reasonable concern in our existing side.

750k a year for a player with that CV is a lot of brass.
How about we draft and properly develop our own ... 😱😱😱

So much for Clayton Oliver. Glad that's not gonna drag on next off season.

Want one of our own developing mids to step up anyway. We have enough there on the list. Some just need to make the grade

We really don't though. It falls away so fast. Cripps, Walsh and Curnow the only proven mids.

If we have the money in the cap and we frontload it, why wouldn't you offer that little bit more to sign someone who's shown enough? Why can't we chew gum and walk at the same time?

Why is it that it's seen as an either-or proposition, trading in some young talent for - presumably - overs in order to get them to leave their current club whilst working on our development setup?

Provided we have the funds, I see no issue. Cerra is a midfielder, not a flanker; he's been played on the flank while he gets up to AFL levels of fitness. But if we're going to try and poach someone from Freo, wait a year or two and go for Serong.

Kemp is 193cm and a big unit. Very much considered to be Cripps/Fyfe like. We could have the next Oliver manchildbeast sitting on our injury list. He may even grow yet, he’s 19; isn’t he? I know he’s listed as a defender but I would be shocked if we didn’t slot him in as a mid given our defensive stocks.

Players like Shiel who had other, longer term motives for choosing *
I don't see the difference.

He wouldn't have gone there if they hadn't been able to sell their story of success, as well as other prospects. At no point have they struggled to get players to nominate them.

Which was the point of my post.

19 years old, ACL in his draft year, foot injury this year and yet to play an AFL game. We can't throw our eggs in that basket. He needs to develop.

Yep,
Serong looks more like 750k value than Cerra to my eye ...

I would go further and say we have Cripps and Walsh... The rest are C graders...
Williams and Martin aren't 'C' graders ...

Dow /Lob/Setterfield are VFL atm - better players in VFL cant run 4 quarters (apprently)

He may have bought their pitch but i get the feeling the “after football” opportunities on offer sealed the deal ...

It's not just Shiel, though. Even during their cheating, they had no issue keeping most of the players on the same page and getting them in.

If they're a sinking ship, I want their PR team at Carlton. A sinking ship shouldn't be able to get passengers.

Yep because a player that is at worst is a b grader, is something to turn our noses up at.
Either way, our recruitment/development requires improvement. It shouldn't limit our ability to bring in reinforcements however..

Williams and Martin also dont have any exposed form as midfielders. One has been a half back for his whole career and the other primarily a half forward. We need pure mids, none of this hybrid crap.

Weren’t they allowed to make extra, outside the cap payments to their players to keep them “loyal” ?
