Williams, Witherden, Jones, Waterman with Ah Chee as sub for mine

Originally had it as Ah Chee on the bench and Waterman as sub but I feel that Waterman just consistently impacts more than Ah Chee.

Jones to take up more slack as a midfield rotation.
Waterman is younger , superior player and works harder

No brainer

It seems odd but I'm not that bothered about Gov being out for a few weeks.

Nah, he’s still the king of getting into the right spot for interceptions and is criminally under rated 1 on 1. We’ll miss him a lot. Will be interesting to see how they structure up - more intercept work for Barrass and Hurn, maybe role with Edwards in Barrass’s usual role.

Meh is not a normal reaction to news that an AA defender is going to miss a few weeks

Witherden 2nd best last week ?

He defended poorly. Thats half his job

30 disposals at 83%
26 kicks
12 marks
10 rebound 50s
5 score involvements

I didn't notice many bad defending efforts but if there were it would have had to be atrocious to negate the above

1 Forward - Jones.(also play mid)
1 Ruck - Williams
1 Mid - AhChee (also play forward)
1 Back - would like to see Witherden+Hurn together, Withers certainly deserves his spot, but why double up when you can have Nelson as a tag/shutdown man - Nelson.
Sub - Waterman (versatile+endurance against a fast running side)
* But wow+gee, look at our depth now...can't wait till post bye!

It is not clear to me that Nelson is not the worst of the group of defenders, he is still prone to making errors and turnovers, and the others have points of difference that Nelson doesn’t have. The argument that most of Nelson’s defenders are making for his retention is that he can be used as a shutdown player in the midfield. This is true to some extent, although Redden might be an alternative if a shutdown role was considered necessary. If there are no run with roles envisaged for Nelson in this game, I would like to see Witherden picked because he has an exceptional weapon with his kick and I don’t see that he has done much wrong in his first six games. The prospect of more than one attacking kicker from the backline is appealing.

I can't remember off the top of my head, but there was a couple of times where I noted he get beaten defensively. But then over the course of a couple of hours, guys are going to get beaten from time to time. It's probably a little unrealistic to set an expectation that a defender (or any player for that matter) can't lose any contests.

It's probably fair to see defensively WItherden isn't the strongest. Offensively though he has been such a weapon.

Agree, would like to see the combo of Hurn+Witherden, and it might happen? Apart from his kicking ability, he takes the game on, tackles hard, is quite the all-rounder, going to be something.
He's probably more suited to the Giants run+gun style than Nelson?(esp. decisionmaking) You'd think he'd be an automatic inclusion, just depends if MC thinks Hurn is enough, as he always has been, and they need a different tool in the box re match-ups?
We wait and see...

Probably Witherden's best game as a defender tbh and still got leather poisoning. One memorably bad moment where he coughed up the easiest of goals on that poor switch.

Nelson had a bad turnover kick coming out and laid an egg instead of picking up the ball which cost us a goal. Had his good moments too. Flew the flag when campaignery smashed Witho late. Full width of the field chase and tackle as last defender in the line.

Cole is most in danger I think. He brings high energy but seems to over-commit too often.

Not sure how much to read into it, but out of those 3, Cole's the only one named on field which might suggest he's ahead of the other two in the MCs eyes

Don’t see either of Langdon or O’Neill getting in, they’ll probably both play WAFL. We’re already making three changes, that’s plenty to a winning team, and neither of them got a chance to press their case last week.

Nelson and Witherden to battle over the final backline spot, Jones and Waterman to battle over the final forward line spot. Think Ah Chee makes the cut solely because we’re desperately short on mids.

One of Jones, Waterman or Nelson to be the sub. Don’t think Witherden would make a great sub, he can only really play one position.
Although Witherden as sub and going to HBF frees up Nelson or Cole to play a different role.

Yeah I found that and Harry being named on the field interesting.
I wouldn't put it past them to do that as a red herring and actually not play Harry or possibly Cole.
Be interesting to see what we end up running out with and whether the 18 named on a Thursday is a reliable indicator or a bit of a bluff.
