I love watching Horse and Dean Cox in the swans box. Always robust discussion and alert.

Scott wanted one but the board said no and look what happened there. Why wouldn't he have been a good mentor?

" Scott favoured the rebuild - which would not have been the scorched earth version of 2021. The North board did not. "

Also trading your pick 11 for Polec and you could have had Zac Butters, lol.

Reads as a PR piece for Scott imo.
So the club could have rebuilt but it'd have been a good rebuild rather than the version they're currently undertaking.. ok.
Ultimately, the squad needed retooling and Scott was deemed to not be the person to take the club through it. (He presented 3 options yet the North hierarchy replied: Pass)
His track record as coach is in getting the most out of a solid but unspectacular squad comprising largely of workmanlike players.
I understand the appeal of that but there's literally nothing to verify him as a great fit or that he is capable of leading us or any other club to a flag.

There never is any guarantee that any coach will lead a club to a flag regardless of his past successes. You just have to weigh up whether a person has something positive to contribute which you believe will lead to seeing improvement.

An experienced head is sometimes a good thing to have at the helm, experienced but not someone who's done. The fire still has to be in the belly. There needs to be a hunger to succeed still IMO.

I'm aware of that mate - I'm responding to the idea that he'd have been perfect for us, which is questionable for the reasons I've outlined.

I'm not sure about perfect but he was who I wanted at the time Teague was appointed. Taking into account who was available, etc. I still believe that he could be a good fit.

Ok hear me out here. It’s no bluemour more like hopeful thinking as I’d prefer to keep Teague on instead of Pyking it…… But let’s just say perhaps our PTB are just trying to be a bit mischievous and putting a trail out to convince the opposition clubs that we’re into a D.Pyke. So they interning-turn jump at him. While the whole time we’re actually working hard behind the scenes in the Lyons den or the Hawks nest trying to suss out our preferred candidates. 🤞🏻

If you don't mind the opinion of an outsider looking in...

Carlton need a full cleanout from top to bottom. A football operations is a good start but a board review needs to happen.

With the results that Carlton have had over the time these key members have presided over the club, questions should be asked.

Melbourne had it done back in 2012/2013 and didnt really see results until 2018.

Even hiring a senior assistant firebrand/contrarian type to mix it up with Teague may get a bit of campaigner in the playing group.

Gave you a like for the Snoopy avatar, as for the rest of your post, nope., we aren't Melbourne of 2010-12

Not only is there no guarantee, there is also very little historical evidence of seasoned premiership coaches cross across to new clubs and repeating that premiership success. Leigh Matthews and Mick Malthouse are the only exceptions to the rule I can think off in the last 30 years

We were talking about Brad Scott. He doesn't fit that desription.

Gotta respect Peanuts.

May not be Melbourne, but there is something off about you guys. Perenially on the up but not breaking through. You need a circuit breaker in some way, shape or form.

Knowing footy, will probably be proven wrong in hideous fashion.

I get the premise of your post is to be smart about the coaching positions. Like it .

Sure you know my thoughts about culture, I prefer to drill down further, rather than clickbait

So...

WC had a culture of drugs and party boys, a section at least, but they won a flag in that period. Tigers had a perception of poor culture, that changed after their flags, do they have a poor culture now, 5hat they are losing

Hawks strong culture while winning their 3-peat, has it changed given they sit 17th? I don't think so

As for the Swans, SkyhorseTamer would be better placed, to comment regarding their strengths and weaknesses, but their development is not only better than our club, it's better than most clubs

From what I know, they have have had strong support, $$$, from the AFL, but close to 2 decades, they developed a "no dickheads" policy, as well as strict non negotiables. This was largely driven by the players and is ingrained at their club. They too have misses, but they are rare.

Ultimately, people perceive strong culture around winning, which is flawed, as success is predominantly built on talent

So, while many of our players may seem to have stagnated, that perception changes quickly when winning
Interestingly one thing that was passed on to me regularly was the respect levels between staff and players. Buddy would often hang round and kick with the physios after training for a bit of fun. Whereas Tom Mitchell never did, he was shipped out. They knew he'd be good but didn't care, wasn't the culture fit.

It's also interesting hearing how prepared the Sydney coaches are to pull their guys up for all sorts of things... Ultimately their program is comprehensive. They don't micromanage but they do come down hard on players who don't use the structures they've got set up.

It's funny hearing the physios telling me they prefer the girls because the guys have nfi how to do their own tape and can't be taught, whereas the girls all know how to do it and why they need to.

Was once told 'footy players (men) are mainly incredibly dumb. They need things spelt out for them. The coaches are always trying to make it all really simple for them'

And that's basically why aliir isn't a Swan anymore as well, had social media/partying rules and standards told to him more than once and didn't get it. Didn't get why he had to be disciplined so was shipped out.

We know there are some problems and we hope that those issues are addressed after the review process has been completed. What I don't agree with is the notion that there's this need for a clean sweep right from top to bottom. I think a few changes in the right areas will help, whether it's in terms of the make up of the coaching panel, football department personnel, recruiting, development. Some of those issues are already being addressed i think, evidenced by getting our own reserves team back this year. Hopefully, this will improve our ability to develop players. Anyway, will be an interesting few months ahead of us.

Snoopy avatar wasn't even enough for me. Don't think a cleanout from top to bottom is what we need either. Bit too much like the baby and the dishwater.

I agree 100% but Peanuts was my favourite as a kid, loved Snoopy.

Which posters have stated Barker is an arseh*le
Even at my most vitriolic against Barker as a coach, I have never said he was an arseh*le. I have said many times that he wasn't a good coach which was why I wanted him gone, but I have also pointed out many times that the players all got on really well with him and he seemed like a really nice guy and that I would, if given the chance, probably enjoy a beer with the guy. He doesn't stay at a single place of employment for 10+ years if he's an arseh*le.

The concern that I have, and why advocating for a sweep, is that it feels like it may almost have become a cultural problem. Have seen underperformance for long periods of time have a long term cultural effect on companies and clubs.

A review is a positive step and may reap rewards going forward. I just feel that something needs to fundamentally shift at the club at the highest level to help it break through.

Calvin and Hobbes will be next one.

Sometimes you need to clean out to start anew. Depends where you think the club is now and where it can go in say a three to five year timeframe

The girls have come up playing on suburban fields for fun and the elite junior men's pathway is mostly via private schools who have facilities as good as the AFL clubs.

Great post
