for the life of me I'll never understand the difficulty people have using the word "women"...........
Ingrained sexism? In this case though I was speaking of the girls as junior women who play football and the junior men's pathway as the system that leads into the afl.

Pyke would be a good addition as a senior assistant.

Not keen on him replacing Teague though.
Impressed me a lot when he left the Crows. I felt he handled himself with a lot of class. I know nothing about the camp. I know until then he seemed to
get a lot out of an ordinary list.

For the life of me I’ll never understand why people feel the need to engage confected outrage.
not outraged at all...........you'll know when I'm outraged, I shall quiver and shake.............

Mainly cause its the term they use a lot too. Many of the women I've spoken to who play the sport refer to their team mates as 'the girls'. Doesn't seem to be anything in it at all.

Power Stance Pyke?
He let that happen.
He let the camp happen and continue to happen as it unfolded.
No way as Head Coach.
No freaking way.

as opposed to anything else on zero hanger?
I am getting very, very close to just up and abandoning AFL for local footy or VFL.

Why read anything, if all it is is from a content farm? Why listen to any analysis, if all it is is provocateurs seeking to get you to react? Why watch the games, if the commentary is designed to cultivate parasocial relationships in middle aged men and doesn't even come close to adequate discussion of the very reason we're watching?

Hell, why even watch the games?

What's a ruck infringement? Can anyone tell me? What's the difference between contact below the knees and kicking in danger? What's a dive? Thought it was against the rules, but it's happening almost every week. Are players footballers or are they rules lawyers? Wouldn't know, based on how many opinions on frees we're seeing them share in games. Does in the back exist anymore? What's a high free kick or a trip?

What's a throw?

Don't know how much enjoyment I'm getting out of the game these days, CJMB. Some of that's because the games haven't been great and the rules are incomprehensible for everyone especially the umpires, but some of that's because how we feel about something - regardless of how much you try to avoid it - is shaped by the narratives around it.

And the narrative the AFL is telling is a glittering, expensive, nostalgia evoking lie.

Maybe, but Don Pyke comes from impeccable stock. His late father pioneered academic physical education studies in WA. His course drew in David Parkin (who coached Subiaco while in Perth), Brian Cook (ex WCE and Geelong) and Trevor Nisbett (long-standing WCE CEO)

Brett Burton and Andrew Fagan were worse at Adelaide in 2017.

interesting anyway. . .
But his face is crooked!

the rules/interpretations frustrate me and pretty much all of the associated media is a commercial entity, driven around clicks and reactions (can't blame them, that's effectively what it all is now)... but I really struggle watching the lower grades, unless it's our reserves and then I'm only watching a few players and don't really get into the game. Not to mention I'm locked to Carlton after all these years. Call it Stockholm Syndrome, whatever... if anything I'm probably more invested in the baggers than I've ever been, which is weird considering the current concern with what's going on at the club...

I grew up following rugby and footy. Played footy through juniors to about 15, was an very average fullback, before switching and paying rugby through to about 21 when I'd blown both shoulders up. I watched super rugby religiously (like footy), would go to games at AAMI and used to drink with a few of the Rebels boys for a while there too. I reckon the past few years I've only watched maybe 6 or 8 Rebels games and even forgot that the Wallabies were playing on Monday night or whenever it was last week (did enjoy the replay though).

The weird thing about that, and why I'm bringing it up, is that at first glance there's some stuff I really like: I think the recent rule changes have been predominantly positive and overall are improving the game, I like that there's a 'changing of the guard' and a younger crop of players are coming through which is exciting (the media is no different to AFL, just smaller). Despite this I'm significantly less engaged, I enjoy watching but I'm not really following anymore. There's been so many changes and disruption to the top-tier competition super rugby.. the South African teams leaving, Japan getting kicked out, Argentina gone, Force getting dissolved then rejoining (after their weird time in the Twiggy Forrest run Indo-Pacific 'Global Rapid Rugby')... at the end of the day the competition has been so f***** that I've lost all connection to it. Maybe once the two new Fijian teams join I'll watch again, but for now I'm lost.

That's where the AFL at least is going great. The code and competition appear about as strong as ever, despite the issues with rules/adjudication and complete cesspool that is Football Media. We've got club that, despite most of this century being engulfed in s***ness, has a great history and at the end of the day is real. Just ignore the media as best you can, or pick and choose and listen after a win to hear something you like and take a break after a loss, and fingers crossed whoever takes Hocking's job has a level head and considers sitting down with umpires, players an coaches to address the rules and improve the way they're adjudicated to make it clearer, easier and have less complete-grey-area-mystery-box-wtf decisions.

Why do I agree with everything you write? You're always spot on, even when you're just asking for a salt lick
I just read your mind....then post!
Horses can do that.

That's pretty full on.

I just watch footy with a pizza and beer. Works for me.

I think comes with a laziness in how people address each other
My brother hated when a guy would come over and how’s it going boys it instantly gave them superiority
He’d straight away say I’m not a boy I’m a man that then put the guy on the back foot reclaiming the power dynamic
