This part interested me (haven’t seen the footage yet in WA);

RL: Yes, certainly take the call and consider it. I am aware, there’s enough Carlton people, famous Carlton people, premiership players, coaches, ex-champions that are advocating in a sense because they’ve worked with me or know me personally and understand their club and there’s those sort of connections, so I do know that’s occurring as well.

I assume SOS is part of this due to their relationship (business I believe??). But reading that suggests that he is pressing his case to influential Carlton people and they are in turn pushing it on for him.

Haven’t seen the footage, but reading it to me seems like he was trying to send a message to the Carlton board of I’m here and I want the job, he was quite complimentary to MLG as well

It's interesting that some are concerned about whether Clarkson will still have the 'fire in the belly' or the drive to give it his all ... yet Lyon had doubts about whether he wanted to coach again, ever, until his chat with Matthews a few days ago.

Lyon will be a big mistake and the closest thing to Malthouse v2.0. Not the right fit for this club or playing group.

Successful clubs would have backed in their coach an surrounded him with the right people and culture. Teague has never had that from our club ! It’s a disgrace. Don’t underestimate what this culture is doing to the players and their performances. But that’s all on the coach!

Who’s decision was it to keep the same off field coaching team from last season into this one? There was a big opportunity to change things up in 2019 and 2020 but besides Teague being made coach nothing else changed.

I get 2019, Teagues loyalty to his assistants helping him get the gig was probably palpable but 2020 was a different kettle of fish. I cannot fathom that was anything but Teagues decision considering we were in the best financial position we’ve been in for 30 years

It's just the theatre mate and out of respect to David Teague who is still currently employed and contracted at the job. Wouldn't even look into that stuff.

Hard to say but seemed pretty genuine to me - acknowledging that he was struggling at the end of his time at Freo etc.

Lyon would bring a wealth of experience and offer the Carlton Football Club something we haven't had before. He is the right fit for this club and playing group and has the fire in the belly to win a Premiership.

Do you know that for a fact? Asking for a friend.

It is well known in the industry that Carlton has put less funds into its footy department than just about every other club in recent years. You really think Teague chose to keep barker as his senior assistant.

Haven’t had before? Is that what they said about Malthouse and Pagan? That went well also. Again ask freo what they thought of Lyon in the end. Look how quickly their club has turned around since he has left.

That would work if we had of picked (with no process) the right coach in the first place....nice guy but too stubborn to hear we had a problem leaking goals and too weak to change the support staff that were in charge of the problem.

His chat with Matthews was appparently 6 or 7 weeks ago according to Matthews.

Be prepared to be pleasantly surprised.

Justin comes with huge wraps. He has worked with and for some of the big names in sports management and coaching.

People as far reaching as John Buchanon (former Aussie cricket coach) rave about Justin's abilities.

No matter the case, I love the long-term big picture announcements thaf are to come in the following weeks.

Leppa doesn’t come across as a calm and considered personality, traits that are as high in importance in that role as anything else that is needed imo.

Look at Neil Balme, the quintessential pro in this role. Obviously good at what he does but is as calm and considered when talking as if sitting on the beach in a laidback bean bag sipping pina coladas.

I’d like to be pleasantly surprised but think his prickliness is better suited to coaching.

He played for, and was an assistant to both Parkin and Walls

If you pressed me, honestly I think I'd stick with Teague, change the footy admin that's clearly been substandard and reshuffle the line coaches.

I still haven't seen enough to tell me if David is actually not going to work out

I’d love to do this as well, but we absolutely need to find out quick smart if it’s coaching or we have overrated the list markedly. Just can’t afford another year or two to find out.

Betts said in a year when Samo really wanted to cement his spot in the team, Samo’s become frustrated being moved around the ground, starting the year in defence, then moved to the middle a bit and finally pushed forward before being out of the team.
Did Samo do anything to increase his fitness/tank to be able to play in the midfield in the time he's been at the club? You want it you have to put in the hard yards to get it.

How can you compare coaches and their styles as if they are like to like?
Should I ask Freo fans how their only Grand Final appearance in their history was under Ross Lyon?
How Nat Fyfe won 2 Brownlow medals under Ross Lyon?
How their losses in hindsight in those prelims and Grand Final was against one of the best sides of modern history and arguably of all time?

Freo were a minnow club. Nothing. Little sibling of West Coast. He made them something.

Some can be bitter all they want.

I can't say I'm thrilled with the rumour of Leppitsch as Head of Football.

The role has more responsibilities (admittedly administrative) than head coach.

There'd be hiring and firing. Ultimately in charge of fitness, training, player welfare. Staying on top of list management and salary cap, mediating between coach and recruiters, mediating between the ceo and coach, presenting to the board. And so much more.

You'd need vision, strategy, leadership, people skills, operational and administration competence.

I don't know Leppitsch from a bar of soap. He was a gun player and has some (assistant) coaching chops. I can't put my finger on it, but something just doesn't feel right with him being proposed as Footy Manager. Maybe I'm not convinced he's got the CV/skills to match the job.

And before you ask, I don't have any better suggestions. Might need to ruminate further on this one.

Who knows? Neil Balme's CV read Ex-thug and failed Coach when he first got a similar job at Collingwood, has been in demand ever since.

If that is true you would think the board would have learnt from their mistakes right ?

So what process are they following to select the new coach other then being obsessed in getting the big name to appease the fans.

There is no process this time either. As MS3 said each board member is doing their own thing. Where is the unity and the process. Why aren’t people like Caracella being considered. There is no process. Just get the big name, don’t worry if they are the right fit, it will make the fans happy! It’s a rabble!

Yep. MM had no fire left and was in the end a bitter old man trying to get one back over Eddie. Lyon has everything to prove and knows what’s required to be at Carlton more so than any other candidate. He understands how the place operates.

Clarko is of course not a bad option but to me it doesn’t sound like his heart is truely in it. Dollars won’t change that.

It's not all on the coach, but a substantial part is on the coach.
We should have had a better HoF than Lloyd. We should have kept SOS to drive the direction of the list.

But Teague is not in any way blameless.
He argued to keep the same assistants last year. His management of the younger players has been appalling. A stronger Head of Football would have stopped him from over-ruling Russell on selection, but Teague can't be blaming the Club for not stopping him doing what he wanted to do.

The list is fine, injury plagued.

Coaching has problems, but I don't know that they are fatal.

I have seen this club try and buy a premiership too many times to think that shit works any more and am sick of hearing about the next saviour.

We just need Judd or Malthouse or Cripps or Charlie to get it right.

We need a ****ing team, working together, with an admin who backs them and stops jumping at ****ing shadows.

I hate losing, but I hate losing knowing that the chicken littles are going to start asking for their next sacrifice and their next saviour even more.

Geelong took time, Hawthorn took time, Richmond took time.

Its not hard to figure out
