Rubbish, this is the job of the Head of Football. That is, line up better assistants, and line up the head coach to accept them.

You don't just accept what he wants - you do what is needed for the success of the football department. No matter how hard Teague pushed it otherwise, Lloyd should have brought in those assistants.

Oh, it's definitely Lloyd's fault, and why he also needs to be moved out. A good Head of Football would have us in a much better position, and I personally think is an even more important hire for us than the head coach.

But it would be a but much for Teague to blame the Club for not over-ruling him on what he wanted.

In last 5 years? Hardwick by a mile.

Longmire is better than Clarkson.

Clarkson got lucky. Pretty much anyone could have coached those Hawthorn teams and won premierships.

I would say the opposite is true about Clarkson - the Hawks weren’t the best team most of the duration of those 3 seasons and certainly weren’t in 2008 either - but they won close finals and got there - to me those close margins come down to better coaching snd better at inspiring the team to just do that little more to get over the line

In all my years of watching sport, playing sport and coaching sport the only people who think premiership winning coaches 'just got lucky' are naive at best.

Bad coaches don't win premierships. It's that simple, good coaches can go 'out of date' sure.

A good coach can win a premiership with a mediocre list much easier than a mediocre coach can win with a good list.

A bad coach, which is what you imply when you say 'he was just lucky' cannot win a premiership. Clarkson built a team, an ethos a way of playing that it almost didn't matter who was out injured. They'd get the job done. Now he's rebuilding. If he stayed I'm sure he'd just do it again there in time.

At worst he's as good as longmuir or Hardwick overall. At worst. He's an all time great and 'just got lucky' sounds like major sour grapes.

Haven’t had before? Is that what they said about Malthouse and Pagan? That went well also. Again ask freo what they thought of Lyon in the end. Look how quickly their club has turned around since he has left.

Take a look at the influx of young players in Lyon's last few years. Longmuir took over a young side about to flourish, much like Teague did.

Who knows? Neil Balme's CV read Ex-thug and failed Coach when he first got a similar job at Collingwood, has been in demand ever since.

And everybody laughed at Collingwood when they signed him. Pointed at him and labelled him a dopy idiot.

Proved them wrong. Just as I believe Leppa would.

Howdy

Long time lurker but never took to posting until now.

Ah, jeez. Incoming OTT rumor.

I don’t know about being traumatised but I have some apprehension about who we bring in next. Over the last 20 years weve tried the new, to the experienced, to the club icon, to the training wheels, to those who achieved the ultimate success but alas here we are again.

I have a feeling that this time it’s a bit different - the list is quite solid, we are looking to align and unify the recruiting/drafting/player development area’s and the perception is that the board to will accept accountability for results.

These tangibles in addition to gaining either Clarkson or Lyon (inclusive of a relevant game plan) leaves me feeling optimistic (and I’m normally a half glass empty man).

Pull the trigger I say and let’s get it happening.

Wow! A well reasoned, valued contribution. Not sure what took you so long but it's good to have more quality posters providing opinion and insight. Please post more and welcome!

Saying Clarko got lucky is like saying Leon Cameron has been unlucky.

Has Teague ever blamed anything?

And also we have been hearing, all season, that the reason that we kept all our "sh*tty" assistants was because Teague wanted. Where has this been stated by anyone at the club?

I thought Leppitsch said he was leaving footy altogether for good end of 2020? Why does he want back in is my question.

My read on Lyon last nite.

Of course I've been approached.
As if I'd tell you before Teague goes!

Of course Clarko would be better choice...of course ....if you count premierships...
However, there is a little thing called chemistry and it's why I knocked back the Pies, and it's why I'd be great at Carlton. I'm a better fit chemistry wise than Clarko. (And we are both great coaches)

The trading for Cerra vs going to the draft has some parallels with Bring in Lyon or Clarkson vs stick with Teague

We don’t know if Cerra will become an elite mid but he’s got a track record and tracking well. Likewise we don’t know if Lyon and Clarkson can repeat their previous success. We don’t know what our draft pick would be like if we went that way and how long they will take to develop. We also don’t know how Teague will develop as a coach. Right now he’s a bottom 3 coach. Certainly not top 12. Could he become a top 3 or 5 coach? Has he shown enough?

It’s clear the Board want to play it safe and go with a Lyon or Clarkson. Will be interesting to see if we do the same with trading for Cerra.

You're kidding aren't you?

We talking about the same Neil Balme here?

Ask the real old timers what they thought of Balme as a player. Ask them about the way he carried himself.

Ask them how he portrayed and carried himself as a coach.

The Neil Balme that we know and revere today was not the same Balme that he once was.

FMD, Balme last played eons ago. Who gives a flying fk what he was like as a player, his demeanour for the last 20 is like chalk and cheese to his white line fever days on the field.

I’ve heard Leppa very recently multiple times and to me he has a very divisive type personality. I’m not sure when you are the centre of everything in the football department that is a very good trait to have.

I would love to see the presentations both Lyon and Clarkson would give to our Board on why they are the right person for job and what they would do to change things. Would be brilliant and engaging. Would probably be hard to choose between the two. But alas we will never get that opportunity.

Maybe Blue Abroad, Pommy or Blue Heaven could do a mock version.

As much as I wished the Teague experiment worked, I’ve seen enough to know that there will be no improvement even if we reshuffled the decks with the assistants. People suggesting that Ross isn’t a right fit have rocks in their heads
My least favorite form of argument is giving your opinion and then trashing others who don't share it.
And I'm not saying I don't agree with you. Just asking if we can give opinions without the need for that last bit?

Neil Balme killed it at Geelong in the same role before he went to Collingwood, everybody cried at Collingwood when he left prematurely and went to Richmond more like it…

On the No Discussion thread an opposition poster HBFlanker said in relation to Collingwood:

3 candidates have voluntarily pulled out.

They are now interviewing 4th and 5th rung candidates. Graham now the front runner.

One of the candidates will sign at Carlton as an assistant to Ross Lyon and reportedly told his manager never to communicate with Collingwood again, the interview went that bad.

Its a circus with their current board and no recruiting manager.

Wondering whether anybody has some insight as to who this is who will be coming to Carlton under Lyon?

Who’s decision was it to keep the same off field coaching team from last season into this one? There was a big opportunity to change things up in 2019 and 2020 but besides Teague being made coach nothing else changed.

I get 2019, Teagues loyalty to his assistants helping him get the gig was probably palpable but 2020 was a different kettle of fish. I cannot fathom that was anything but Teagues decision considering we were in the best financial position we’ve been in for 30 years

I feel a user name change coming :D

Yep. MM had no fire left and was in the end a bitter old man trying to get one back over Eddie. Lyon has everything to prove and knows what’s required to be at Carlton more so than any other candidate. He understands how the place operates.

Clarko is of course not a bad option but to me it doesn’t sound like his heart is truely in it. Dollars won’t change that.
IF Clarko is genuinely interested, and I feel more confident that he is than I did yesterday (and without any personal knowledge whatsoever) you will see how much passion he has for the job straight away.

Clearly he is fully committed to his finish at hawthorn and deference to the position that Teague finds himself in. We'll know pretty early next week you'd imagine.
