Im thinking OMac may get another contract.
I'd like to see McGovern play back.
Do we look at Talia as a back up option? Similar to taking Silvagni from Freo a few seasons back?
Then pray like hell that Marchbank has a bit of luck..
We would be mad not to look at Talia, for the minimum - depth, or as a full back to free up Jones as a 3rd tall who can play in front and break the lines.

Setterfield and E. Curnow aren't going to be part of our midfield going forward.
Kennedy has played 2 admittedly very good months and but the jury is still out on whether he's going to be a part of it long term.
Stocker - yes, he does need to be given a run in the middle. With our club who knows when that's going to be

I also rate Serong higher but Serong isn't the one who's reportedly available. Freo won't play ball if we offer pick 6 and say "take it or leave it". We just paid pick 8 for Saad - surely a 10 year very good-to-elite midfielder is worth a little extra
Saad is better than Cerra so it’s pretty fair.

All year the media have, on a weekly basis, ripped apart the entire coaching panel. No club has had it’s methodology, strategy and game day effort (of players) dissected with such forensic enthusiasm.

so just in case there was any Carlton board member hiding under a rock and not seeing the onfield debacle unspooling for themselves, any time they put SEN on the radio, chucked Kayo on or watched a Sunday talk show they are getting bombarded with a conga line of talking heads ridiculing the coaching panel and the effort of the players, which usually suffers when there’s a lack of connection and/or belief with the coaches.

so the board initiate a review, which isn’t an unreasonable action to take considering what a basket case the media have helped demonstrate us to be. They do their best to take the heat off Teague with some hamfisted lines about the review not being about the coach which get ripped apart by the media and then they do the right thing and shut up entirely.

the review runs its course, the coaching panel managed to completely lose its bundle and drop games vs Gold Coast and north, aided by a playing group who have clearly given up on them and the season.

so now the media need the news cycle to follow in the usual fashion and they start exaggerating, accelerating or flat out inventing events because if Carlton wouldn’t mind the getting this over amd done with we can pick over the carcass now and then get on with finals.

carlton continue to shut up and do its best to focus on farewelling and giving clear air to a 300 game former captain, a great decade+ clubman and possibly the most important player in the club’s history since 2000.

but of course the media resolutely continues to chip away, chip away. Last I checked Carlton isn’t interviewing Lyon on National TV.

would it be smart for Carlton, if they have a view that Teague may not continue, to sound people out right now? Abs****ing-lutely yes. It’s a competitive market. Our greatest historical rival is in the market. If we didn’t put feelers out to logical candidates and one of them took the Collingwood job, the media - along with this board- would lose their minds at the complacency, the lack of purpose and decisiveness blah blah.

so when the media says Teague has been treated poorly, tell me how?
Firstly and most importantly his and the team of coaches he refused to change despite it being suggested to him have performed poorly by any measure conceivable. That is objectively true.

The club I’m sure would have liked a smoother review process with the panel able to be at the club in person but with borders being shut you find a way and trust that having the right people executing the review is more important than compromising on the individuals and just getting people who can park out the front.

the club has tried to avoid comment after getting crucified for trying to ease the pressure on Teague and have shut up since.
Everything since then has been a media circus punctuated with absolutely horrific onfield performances that Teague is leading.

if Pickering wants an apology for Teague why doesn’t he ask old mate Hutchy for a start.

GIVE ME A SPELL

And thanks to the mods for flushing toilet boy from the thread, and the whole site so swiftly.

What an absolute childish flog he was. And to so many other teams as well. Embarrassing !

In future if it happens again, we ask that no-one quotes the post/s.

Report it immediately and we will take care of it.

I cannot bloody stand Whateley. Cannot handle that self-satisfied smugness every time he opens his mouth - you'd swear he loves to listen to his own voice. Generally speaking most of the footy media are woeful, unimaginative, lazy, monotonous types - I mean how many more times can you hear sh*t like " I like the way he goes about it. " FFS, that phrase is vomited up so often it's lost all meaning and is like having your ears scrubbed with steel wool every time it's uttered: no matter how most of them try they are seemingly incapable of expanding their vocabulary beyond mind-numbing cliché.

Smugness? Why? Because he articulates his point in a way that’s clearly above other journos?

I think if there’s one thing he isn’t, it’s smug. I think he calls most things fairly and without any bias. One of my faves.

Funny how people have changed their thoughts on the Saad deal after the fact

As for Cerra, we missed that boat, price would be considerably higher, but makes us better immediately, rather than waiting for a draftee to find consistency

It will come down to what we give up, but I can see us trading out a player for that deal to be done, or our first this year or next as a minimum

Why do we need Cerra's output now?
I’m not sure about you but I have fatigue from drafting promising Vic Country/Vic Metro 17 year old midfielders who need 4-5years to develop AFL midfielder stamina and match conditioning. Don’t get me wrong I’m glad we put in the years from 2015-2019 but if there’s a ready made 22 year old proven talent and it costs us pick 6 (or Pick 5 if we get belted tonight) then I’m up for it.

Saad is better than Cerra so it’s pretty fair.
Very reductive way of looking at it - ignoring the fact that I don't agree with that statement either.

They're not even remotely similar players so it's not as simple as "x is better than y". Cerra is 5 years younger than Saad was at time of trade, plays in a position of generally much greater demand (elite midfielders are much harder to find than attack-minded HBFs - before even adding Saad we already had Docherty, Newman, Williams coming from GWS - we saw that issue this year where we couldn't fit them all in so pushed Docherty up to the wing) and has a higher ceiling as a player IMO. Midfield is also clearly our most gaping weakness as a footy side - we've already seen what happens to the likes of Cripps when we leave them unsupported for years. Do we want the same to happen to Walsh?

I have held the (probably unpopular) opinion that we overpaid for Saad and I don't really think he was a "need" for us per se; what is indisputably a need for Carlton is to improve our midfield. Adding Cerra is objectively an improvement on our current stocks - and we would project getting around 10 years out of him at a very good level at worst (based on what he's already shown), or an elite level at best. We will hopefully get 5 years out of Saad before his athletic gifts diminish and with them his impact on games on footy - yet he plays a role that is inherently easier to replace.

I don't really think you could come to the conclusion, when taking into account of all of this, that Cerra would have less value than Saad at the trade table. There's just too much in his favour IMO

5 for Cerra is absolutely fine.
Is it though? Is he REALLY worth Pick 5? I'm not convinced.

I wouldn’t give up any extra picks, we’ll need the cheap labour.

he walks in and is immediately our best user of the ball in the midfield.
His disposal by foot is not that great, it's one of my concerns about using pick 5 to get him. We need a couple more mids with elite disposal by foot as we have enough grunts with poor disposal.
If Cripps can stay in his lane and just get it out to Cerra, Walsh etc then along with bringing Stocker through to take over Ed’s role we’ve got the makings of a good midfield group. Throw in Dow, some Williams pinch hitting there’s a couple of good rotations to work with.
Yes, must retain Dow.

Lack of an extensive vocabulary isn't a deficiency that you could associate with Whateley funnily enough. It seems that your objection to him is based on not liking his persona rather than him not being a very capable and knowledgeable presenter and commentator on a wide number of sports. Like him or not he has the professionalism that a lot of others lack.

His willingness to push an agenda is the antithesis of professionalism.

Was listening to SEN on my mad dash home before yet another lockdown and those absolute flogs in Leppitsch and Whateley were slagging off Carlton and how they are taking 'such a narrow approach' again in going after either Clarkson or Lyon but no-one else (despite the club not issuing a word publicly yet, or even sacking Teague), and how we learned nothing even after Pagan & Malthouse failing.

Then they talking up Collingwood how they are casting the net wide in their search for a coach, including interviewing and new and upcoming potential coaches and seemingly 'doing everything right'.

What those absolute rubbish talking FLOGS conveniently did not mention was that we had done exactly this with Bolton (AFTER Pagan & Malthouse) and given yet another chance to a previously untried coach in Teague, which, despite our efforts in doing the right thing, landed us where we are now.

Now I am not a fan of all this cloak and dagger with the Review and Teagues Tenure, but even blind freddy can see that Clarkson is a once in a generation opportunity, and the club has to act now and try everything they can to get him on-board.

Also, Liam Pickering (admiringly in his Defense of his client Teague) was going on about Lyon seeming spouting his credentials in the Media and posturing as a candidate, yet it was unlikely thet either him or Clarko would even need to be interviewed, they would be simply given the job.

ALL of this ^ from rumour and supposed behind the door discussions. Even if true, we have tried every way possible in the past with no success, and I fully support getting Clarko at all costs, as the club cannot afford to take any risks with yet another untried coach.

What absolute GUTTER journalism. Especially from Whateley, whom I used to admire when at the ABC, has now cheapened his credentials and become yet another Shock Jock. And Leppitch, well his record speaks for itself.
Did Leppitsch mention becoming our football manager?

Is it though? Is he REALLY worth Pick 5? I'm not convinced.

Come draft night it’ll become 8 if that makes it any better.

29 vs 113 is the price if we really want that 5 draft pick. I'd like to think that's not happening, as bad as we were last week.

But it's an awful prospect, isn't it? People talk about when we make finals, or this or that. I'll just be glad when we're not going into Round 23 wondering whether our players are going to give effort or not.

I would love to think we'll crack in like Hawthorn and Richmond this arvo, but I've got a feeling (with a terribly firm basis in history) that we'll be more like the Suns. And I am sick of that.

I really hope Eagles beat Lions today
then Pies beat *
The thought of that puts a big smile on face.
The Irony Triangle: Blues Supporters barracking for Pies, * Supporters barracking for the Blues, Pies supporters barracking for the Courts...

Fantastic post. I wonder whether we conducted a thorough process when we went and poached Barassi. One of the best coaches we’ve had set our culture up for 30 years worth of success. Alternatively we did conduct thorough process for Bolton who was one of the worst coaches ever from a win/loss ratio.

Any club looking for their next coach would love to have candidates with the resumes of Clarkson and Ross.

The media narratives are sickening bias agenda from Carlton haters. The Windy Hill Sun, Whately, Garry Lyon, Tim Watson, the list goes on. How these jokers get paid for talking rubbish defies logic. Whately was pushing AFL agenda the other day justifying the Carter report, he’s a sellout of the highest order.

Makes me laugh how at the start of the season they were talking nonsense about how Cripps will go back to Perth if we have a bad season, we can’t fit Harry in the cap because of Zac Williams and Saad. Now we are about to get Cerra and every pundit is talking up Freo’s youth creating a narrative of why would he want to leave? Didn’t hear anything when we kicked their butts four times in a row.
They are all afraid of when our sleeping giant awakens.
His willingness to push an agenda is the antithesis of professionalism.
Once he sets himself on something, you can't budge him. Still it is fun hearing the change to fanboy tone when he interviews someone he admires. I think sanctimonious is apt for Gerard and many people have used that in relation to him.
