That's just a bizarre look when a bloke called Matty Cash plays for Poland when it's not exactly a diverse country.

Good luck to him, wasn't getting a game for England most likely.

No different to Ben Brereton playing for Chile.

Also amazingly, your mother can come from any country on earth but if your Dad's name is Smith you're not exactly going to seem diverse.

Yeah it’s funny in a way because you think oh yeah he must have grown up in culture didn’t expect.

For example hearing the late Phil Hughes talk of his mother’s Italian background and talking of his Nonna. Nick Kyrgios talking of growing up eating Malaysian food.

Have you missed Alexis Mac Allister running around in the PL? The ginger bearded Argentinian of Irish/Scots ancestry. Even has a brother Kevin.

Funny the stigma this has in sport. For men’s athletes being gay is something that is just so damn hard to admit.

For years Ian Thorpe was pestered over it but couldn’t admit it until retirement.

Yet women’s athletes have no such issues, as the lazy stereotype is that lots of elite female athletes are lesbians. So when you discover that people like Megan Rapinoe, Sam Kerr, Renee Stubbs, Sam Stosur, Megan Schutt etc are not only lesbian but can openly express that to the world there really is a stark contrast.

two people I follow on insta (one is a golf shot trick artist and the other works at Buzzfeed Tasty) I recently discovered were as well and thought nothing of it, but think toxic masculinity plays a part in why men’s athletes don’t as well. From a young age calling someone gay, *** or queer are used as insults so people grow up with the stigma that ‘gay’ is wrong, and unlike their female counterparts not something to embrace and celebrate.

Society has a lot of growing up to do IMO so that more like Cavallo can be accepted for who they are.

Nailed it mate. People complain saying “why is this news?” But they don’t actually realise how important it is for gay male athletes to be known so that it really doesn’t become news anymore.

Or maybe there's some science behind it.

Love this. Says a bit about the culture at the club too that he felt sufficiently safe and supported to do this. Wish I could say I’m as confident about the terraces & social media..
Does Australia have a version of Kick it out who are pretty quick to call out fan groups like they did when Gilmour was called homophobic slurs earlier this season.

Who? The people who conducted the study?

The people from the American Institute of Bisexuality?
The people who think we should be ruled by base emotive responses, regardless of how true I think that study is.

If you're good enough doesn't matter your last name or country diversity. Plenty of Fijians etc playing rugby for Japan and Japan is definitely not diverse. At least he has a polish mother

You mean the responses people have subconsciously at seeing certain things?

If something grosses you out, it grosses you out.

Not sure much can be done to change that.

You can remember you aren't an animal slave to your base emotive responses I suppose.

That's not how that works.

If someone is sitting there in front of you picking their nose and eating it day in and day out are you going to apply that theory or are you going to be grossed out and tell them to stop or do it in private?
