Yes and no. We still don't know.
More evidence that new variants will most often then not come from largely unvaccinated populations. More evidence that everybody needs to get vaccinated.
 
lol the Omicron fear is hilarious. The media have a fear hard on for it. It won't change a damn thing. There is no evidence it's even all that deadly. Just get vaccinated and lets get on with it.

They should have called it Foxtrot Uniform Charlie Kilo.

I'm with you here..
There's actually more evidence that it's less severe.
Stats are a bit bias though as South Africa has a young population.. So early days but the panic is unwarranted. If it's more transmissible and much less severe in symptoms this could actually be good news and will give more herd immunity without the carnage but that's just speculative at this point

If this variant can wipe out delta with no severe symptoms then that largely unvaccinated population could save the world.
 
While I'm hopeful that the Omicron (B52) virus is less deadly, its a bit premature for the NSW premier to say the following:

"We don't just need to live alongside COVID, we need to learn to live alongside the variants as well," he said.

"Ultimately we need to open up to the world [and] we need to do so safely, we don’t need to have a knee-jerk reaction, we need to have a proportionate and balanced response."

The Premier said the government did not plan to reintroduce hotel quarantine for all international arrivals and that he was "confident" the high vaccination rate in NSW would keep the community safe.

He said it was "too early" to say what the next steps in combating the variant would be but locking down the state for every new variant was "untenable".

Leaving this here in case he ends up making the Ruby Princess looks like a trip on Popeye because with his (alleged) level of (alleged) dumb****ery.
 
The key difference though is that the Ruby Princess handling was clearly wrong.

This one opinions are very split as to whether or not the kneejerk reaction is justified. If its already in Sydney the decision has probably been made for us anyway.

Yet every media outlet has said about Omicron:

News media is what it is. I don’t think people are panicking at all, not that I have seen anyway. . Just want to try to get ahead of the virus because it takes a while to work out how severe it is…or not.
I think it’s good we are bringing back quarantine for a while.
The anti vax brigade don’t watch it anyway as they have their own hysterical media to consume.

I don't know what media outlets you've been reading but pretty much everything that I have read has been quite measured and is going with what the experts are saying - we just don't know enough about it yet. I don't watch breakfast TV so maybe my view is somewhat blinkered.

Perhaps the hysteria you are referring to is social media creating strawmen.

Not sure what you mean by the last sentence but I havent seen anything at all on social media about it except the twitter thread linked in here.

Its almost like it's not just Murdoch owned media outlets that are completely full of shit.
 
The Case studies on COVID in a few years time will be fascinating.

Society has changed for the worse on the back of something labelled as the greatest threat to humanity turning into what could at best be described a storm on a tea cup.

Will the recriminations come against the pant pissers, the media, the over reactors, those drunk with new found powers, the shill populists, those put in charge who were too weak to lead?

I doubt it because they are the ones who've set agenda. I cant go as far as calling it a conspiracy, it just feels like everybody got sucked into the rabbit hole.
