Watching the SANFL replay, that's some ugly kicking for goal. Jagged a couple, but doesn't fill you with a ton of confidence doing so.
It's like he wasn't told he would be playing forward to just before the bounce.

Hope he has been having some solid goal kicking training this week.

I tend to think the opposite.

It's generally not that difficult to find competent key defenders- it is significantly easier to find people who can play key defence competently than it is key forwards. Defence is where the guys that can't play forward end up, often with significant success.

We've historically been capable of finding key defenders with low resource expended, and there are quite often very good key defenders in the league who are low resource acquisitions- Harris Andrews is probably an example.

I can live with one at the back end of the first- I'm probably ok with the Talia and Davis territory provided you get the picks right, but I'd never spend pick 6 on one.

Edit: to be clear, I think your reasoning process is correct and you've identified the correct issue. I disagree on how hard is it to find, in the sense that I think it's a position where you are significantly more likely to be able to find very good starters in non-draft processes or late draft than you are other positions. Your likelihood of finding elite or even very good midfielders in rookie drafts is almost non-existent (weighted for how many there are)- key defenders? It's not unheard of.

In terms of the 2019 draft, who are the elite mids/key forwards you would have chosen at 6? Serong looks okay but not personally don’t think he will be a teams no 1 mid.

Weitering, Gibcus and to a lesser extent so far DGB have justified selection in the top 10
As KPD’s in their year.

The key issue is he hasn’t made the step up like Talia and Davis made for us in the past

Serong is better than just okay. He’d be our best young mid and a really solid piece of building out our midfield.

rabidcrow, you need to watch more Freo games. Serong is a very good player already and a finals type of player. Dewy is correct, would be at the top of the list of young mids here.

Haven’t actually seen him play for 2 years, but the sanfl highlights look good. Two very strong marks and he converted for goals.

There has to be something there…

Fergus Watts was a better player than McAsey. I think James Sellar probably slightly better too. Shaun McKernan somehow having a 10 year AFL career gives some hope though.

I'm stating here now .....McAsey is back to the playing style, that saw him Drafted at #6 .....consistency may not be there yet, but he's leaping at the ball again .....he looks strong, confident, and the self belief is back

Whilst he's playing fwd currently ...that can be a positive, when you have self doubts & having to play a negating defensive role ......like the journey undertaken by Weitering, who also played fwd for a while .....I suspect, defence is still where he'll end up ....and where we desperately need a quality KPD

McAsey will make the grade !

Could be like Jacob Koschitzke. Play at either end depends on need.

I made the mistake of putting MMM on the other night and hearing the Billy/JB show. God that is awful.
Anyway, they were talking about the WB issues and spoke a bit about their lack of key defenders. They then started on about who they might be able to attract. They quickly brought up McAsey - former pick 6, can't get a look in at Adelaide, great height, should be high on the Dog's list.

I actually laughed out loud. Clearly they have done zero actual research.

Still if the Dogs want him, I'm all for it. Straight swap for Dunkley if they play hard ball. Otherwise Dunkley + a pick coming our way should swing it :p

Bookmarked.

You have way more confidence in him than most supporters that have watched every SANFL/AFL game he's played.
They're not picking the "markers" ......McAsey hasn't played like his Draft year, until recently .....it's fair to judge his output till now, but you also have to factor in external factors

Happy to have the comment bookmarked .....along with Pedlar, Jones, McHenry & Milera POV's

LOL ....remember when the board said Milera would never gain weight and would continue to be a skinny rake, for his career .....now it's being said, he's carrying too much weight 🤣

Today, doesn't determine tomorrow

I hope you're right and applaud your willingness to put yourself on the line.

Very Confident ....not saying this year ....but carrying over his confidence gained this year, into another PS ....

He's 21 YO now ....that's nothing for a KPP ....still younger than Butts / Murray

Milers even before his injury was going pretty ordinary.
Most people's concerns with Milera's game were mostly to do with his hardness not his weight.
My only concern, was Milera nailing down one role .....hardness was an early concern, I agree .....but not now

Sorry to go off-topic
