I was unable to attend the game so don't have the benefit of seeing the clock on scoreboard.

The clock must have started ticking as soon as umpire awarded 50m.

The umpire took his time to place the GWS player on the mark.

Sidey then had about 6 to 8 seconds to have his shot on goal.

It was the opposite. The umpire stopped the clock qt 3.09 when he called the 50. It was 25 seconds from when the 50 was called until took Sidey got to the top of the square and was set up and the umpire said "time back on".

3.09: the umpire said "time back on". The timekeepers heard that and started the clock
The ump used most of this 10 seconds getting Taylor out of the protected area
2.59: the umpire said "kick it now"
2.56: the umpire said "kick it now"
2.53: the umpire said "play on"
2.51: the umpire said "play on" again as Sidey kicked it
2.50: Ball went through

Fortunately it was Sidey who stayed organised and kicked truly.

The clock was 2.46 when the ball bounced in the centre.

I think there was a bit of swapping going on but I thought Murphy was good.
You should keep retreating because you are wrong. Murphy was on him the whole game.

I was there and kept commenting on the match up the whole game.

But to be fair, they kinda look alike right? That's gotta count for something, right?

Right?

It's high time the countdown clock is started from the time the UMPIRE gets his sht together and clears the area instead of heckin'g around to half an hour setting the angle and clearing the players out of the protected zone.

You are better than that Great Grundy. We slaughtered GWS. If you take that scoreline seriously you are not the knowledgeable football watcher I consider you to be.

I'd also add that other than North, there are no gimme games and the Giants will take a few more scalps before the season is over

I disagree on Chugg. He did not look out of place. He is hard at it and has a bit of pace. Ignoring the stats I think he could be a handy depth player. He was a centimetre away from a goal in his first game in that last term.

Give him time.
You are true about Chugg. I saw glimpses of a star. Glimpses. As I have said before, he's a Cat B rookie who was a better runner than player. Work in progress.

The umpiring controversies in this game are all rooted in the changes the AFL has made to rules that should never have been made.

1. Deliberate rushed = free kick on the line. This was introduced because of Hawthorn's tactic of backing through the goals when kicking out if they wanted to get a reset. That should have been a free kick, but nothing else. Conceding a behind in play should be a legitimate defensive tactic as it always used top be.

2. 30 second shot or play on. If it is going to be a rule (and there is no good reason why it should, other than to give umpires a guideline) then it should require players taking more than the 7 seconds allowed in a field kick to kick over the mark.

3. The "stand " rule, with its 50 m penalty makes a joke of the efforts players make to gain 50 m in play. The case of Taylor Adams moving away from the mark but copping the 50 illustrates how wrong this rule is. The extra 50 because players are not allowed to be upset by stupid rules just compounds the insanity.

4. Kicking off outside the goal square after a prolonged run. The kick out already had the length of the square as an advantage. Giving another 30 (because I've only seen one player pinged for running too far when they all do it out of the square) distorts the game. We all just wear this one now, but I loathe it.

5. Deliberate out of bounds. Not necessary. Out on the full is enough.

6. Not controversial any more, but interchange is at the heart of all of the modern game's problems. Get rid of it.

Didn't he set a record for his pace at the combine?
Setting a record in a 2km time trial doesn’t mean you’re a fast runner, it means you have enormous areonbic capability. Fairly sure you already know that though.

Definitely. But it's something you should be looking to hone. Fitness down, work on the kick/skills.
