The bloody Madge eh. He seems to have a miraculous ability to get selected on the back of injuries and illness to others
Look, Madge was just being a nice guy for Howie by collecting his plate of pasta from the cafe at the AIA. If some undisclosed grubbiness happened to fall onto Howies plate while Madge was carrying it, then that is just bad luck...

In: JDG, Carmichael
Out: Chugg, Howe

Sidey, WHE, Pendles and Nicky D to cover Howe's absence down back

That could be an option. Nick D is the 2nd ranked intercept defender in the competition, just behind Tom Stewart.
To me, to cover Howe, it will be a team effort from the back six....

Dean looked underdone and rusty
McMahon not ready as an AFL backman yet - he’s still not an proven VFL backman…not even sure he’s a backman at all

Options are orob
i) Ruscoe
ii) Carmichael - and fill the need from the existing 21

Frustrating news about Howey. Would be great if Chaz Deano had 2 games under his belt which would make him close to an automatic in.

You'd think they'll go with Ruscoe and back our system in to limit the Suns scoring.

The wet weather might be a blessing for us this weekend after all, negating the likes of Chol and Casboult.

The Suns are playing good footy so it shapes to be a fascinating contest. Our mids need to make a statement because that's where they got us last time. We were just too strong all over the ground for them.

You can see a real purpose in the way we're playing our footy right now, if we bring that again Saturday night, we will be mighty hard to beat.

I hold hope that Dean will be a success but I’m also a realist, he’s the best of the rest, some really impressive VFL form prior to joining through the mid season rookie draft. He’s been out all year, played restricted time in the VFL and some have expectations he can walk into the senior team and just go crack. If he does get his chance, I really hope he has a cracker of a debut.

Dean won the best young player award in the VFL last year and was picked up at the end of the season. He wasn't a mid season selection.

Nah he's better than that.

Dean's someone who was unlucky not to be drafted, cut his teeth for Williamstown and now is an impressive prospect. If you are a spud of a player and haven't shown much, you wouldn't be re-contracted until 2024.

Having played a full VFL game last week I hope they are bold and play Dean... even if he is a touch rusty

He is better suited to the role of physically minding Casboult or Chol than Ruscoe… who has been more of a general defender in the VFL

That being said if it comes down to Ruscoe or Madgen…

That’s a tricky one 🤔

Madge has the far greater experience in that role.

Ruscoe is the better rebound and kick of the two though… and even though he hasn’t set the world on fire at VFL level this year, I usually favour blooding youth over older mediocre players

May not really matter that Howe is out, considering the amount of rain expected up there. Sounds like the ball will be floating on the grass, and it's very much going to be a ground ball game.....

Game is gonna be played under water haha

Easy solution,
Adams to play on Cazbolt.
Adams kicks to Pendles, miskick goes to Cazbolt.
Cazbolt shoots at goal, goes out on the full.
Adams takes kick in, kicks to Pendles......

Madge got that Voodoo doll back out again

Really hope it's not Ruscoe or Madgen.

Preference would be Dean in clean swap for Howe. Second preference would be as already suggested: Pendles back, Carmichael in.

I'd rather Kelly or McMahon play before Ruscoe or Madgen

Coxy ain't going anywhere til Brody is ready.

People have short memories... Queens Bday anyone?
Not a knock just an observation on why his HO numbers were high.

Lock in the coackroach! No matter what we happens Madgen will always find a way to get back into the senior team.

Subject: Notes from training today.

The air was frigid around 8.30 so it was surprising to see so many fans already gathered in anticipation of the players gracing the arena. Most were bedecked in black and white and the crowd gradually swelled. The sun came out and under an azure sky the players slowly made their way onto the field to start a solid but not super intense session.
After some desultory kicking the players negotiated the mini-hurdles and there was some running in this area while balancing rods on their shoulders.
This was followed by drill stations with the troops rotating between close-handball, kicking and tackling areas.
There was also some contested work whereby players lined up and had to run to a contest whereby a ball kicked in their area instigated an aerial or aerial and ground duel.
After this the whole ground was used to practise ball movement and the crowd was treated to some slick kicking and speedy manoeuvres from players.
Finally there was match simulation. McRae appeared to umpire and it consisted of two halves with players changing ends during a brief hydration break.
After the main fare, Ash Close brought out the jumping bag and the majority of players had some practice showcasing their leap and the surety of their hands. Others focussed on their goalkicking.
The defenders were involved in body on body work competing for marks.
Grundy and Begg did a lot of running on the outer side of the ground.

Some general observations:

Chugg was in white, though some of the other senior players had to don the paler shade to make up the numbers.
JDG would be a certainty to play based on the way he trained. He moved well and was targeted in the corridor during match-play where he moved forward with some explosive power at times. Chugg in contrast didn’t really stand out in any way and missed some simple marks. He played on the ball and hasn’t appeared to lose any fitness during his brief hiatus.

Ash Johnson looks in good nick and showed some of his marking prowess and athleticism on the jumping bag.
Nick Daicos offered the crowd some highlights with his sublime kicking and vision.

Henry presented very well in the match sim and some of us were discussing how McStay might be used as a foil to protect him because his talent really shines when one watches closely and he could be a greater asset while still young, if afforded greater support.

Harrison has serious wheels and the crowd gasped at one point when he sizzled past them during the ball movement phase.

Noble got run down and tackled fiercely on a couple of occasions, once by Beau whose tackling traits were a feature of match simulation.

Magden looked as keen as ever but was playing forward during match sim and both during this and the later one on one duels, he struggled mightily against Moore.

Murley’s pace and skills stand out and he looked handy overhead for his size when attempting marks on the bag.
Carmichael looks likely to slot into the midfield at some stage as he is strong at the contest and moves quite well. Wouldn’t surprise to see him make the squad soon.

Ruscoe at times looked great and there’s clearly talent there but he appears to be lackadaisical which results in him missing kicks slightly or casually dropping marks. His attitude may well be his greatest weakness.

Dean was in the white, like Kelly, but competed well. He generally struggled a bit against Cameron and Moore in the one-on-one tussles but occasionally held is own. After these bouts, he had a very long conversation with the latter which may be a pointer to selection down the track as he’s willing to learn and his fellow defenders want to assist him. Cameron and Moore was an absorbing contest during the one-on-one battles at the John Cain arena end.

IQ stood out and Adams as ever trained with intensity.

There was a feeling that our recruiting is moving in the right direction rather than selecting vanilla types like Bianco.

Ginnivan looks like he’s dipped his head in peroxide again.

After these proceedings, the players went to various parts of the ground to sign autographs to the adoring throng of fans.

The youngsters were going ballistic over the chance to see Nick up close and personal but some were disappointed that they only had access to players in their propinquity, as a siren signalled the end of the signing session with many of the kids’ insatiable appetite for interactions with their heroes not quite quenched.

Where I was standing, I noted how polite Dean was and he seemed to convey his gratitude just to be playing for the Pies, Crisp was greeted enthusiastically, the towering figure of Cox was popular, and IQ signed enthusiastically. The kids screaming for Darcy were rewarded when he came over, though he lectured them on manners and requested the magic words before signing, though asked the fans questions and responded to theirs. Bianco signed willingly, while Tyler appeared to be rather shy but most amenable to the black and white faithful. Lipinski was making his way around to us when the buzzer summoned the players inside, much to the chagrin of many.

He also happened to be rucking against Green and Himmleberg when he was in there so 🤷‍♂️
That's on the Giants. You can only best whieverbyyou are up against. Lots of teams are using smaller players as their second ruck including Carlton. It's our good fortune to have two legitimate ruckman
