I think it's a number of marginal gains all coming together at the right time. Improvements in shoes, coaching, competition and generational athletes. God I hope it's not drugs.

That's Bob Beamon mark 11 that WR. Absolutely ridiculous.

Just missed the women's relay and the replays will have to wait but sounds like a great last 100m by Terry of US.

Brooke Buschkuehl (its gonna take me awhile to get used to her married name) did an auto qualifier with her first jump of 6.76. All the favourites jumped an auto qualifier.

Anderson Peters in the Javelin has defended his Javelin title, only the great Jan Zelezny of Czech Republic in the 90s has done that. Peters has huge arms.

Jamaica chick's bothched the changeovers

USA men botched the changeovers

Change over times - First change over from Coleman to Lyles is where yanks lost it.

France DQed. They are having a poor World Champs in lead up to Paris. Will be interesting to see how they go in Budapest next year.

Another good night (well moring for us...) of athletics though a disappointment for us with Peter Bol.

Not sure what happened with him - good position, couple of soft pushes (which you expect in a middle-distance run at top levels) but then he went backwards. His finishing time wasn't bad but it was still a WTF race.

Probably only one medal chance left with Brooke in the Long Jump - but still been a pretty good WC for AUS. Thank You Ladies!

anyone got the decathlon points table?
End day 1

Australia began its three-pronged attack in the decathlon, as Olympic bronze medallist Ash Moloney, Tokyo teammate Cedric Dubler and Australian team debutant Daniel Golubovic completed their first day of competition.

One of Australia’s brightest medal hopes for Australia in Oregon, Moloney had a slow start to competition but skyrocketed from 13th to fifth position following a swift 46.88 run in the 400m. The 21-year-old will be pushing himself for a third global medal, after Olympic champion Damian Warner from Canada pulled out of competition halfway through the 400m, citing a hamstring injury.

Moloney sits on 4378 points, less than 100 points from medal position, and said he’ll be relying on “something big” over the following five events to get the job done.

“I’ve had better day ones, so I’m not feeling too flash. I’m still in one piece which is one of my goals from the competition,” Moloney said.

“This is a big one for me, so I am putting pressure on myself to win another medal. I want to be on that podium, and that pressure is part of the game. I’m looking to pull out something big on day two.”

Fellow Australians Dubler finish Day One with 4286 points, while his former housemate Golubovic has accrued 4065 points, placing them as 10th and 18th respectively.

US men and Jamaican women, swept the individual 100m events, but couldn't win the 4x100m relay. Wasn't the 4th runner that caused the problem, it was the baton changes.

Dan O'Brien's commentary this session was great. But when he said 'can USA sweep the sprint events here?' I was like 'but you haven't swept men's events and certainly not women's' - so was prob extra pleased to see Canada win the men's 4x1.

Wallaby why are we seeing such big improvements in the 400m hurdles for both men's and women's the last 2 or 3 years? Better techniques? Better track and shoes? just good timing?
It's mostly the shoes/tracks. 400H is incredibly hard on the joints/muscles/tendons. There is so much more cushioning offered by the shoes and the new tracks that there is far less impact on the body. The 400H is about dragging yourself up and getting going again after each hard landing over a hurdle (which is why you see so many atheletes almost come to a stop on hurdle 9 or10 - they've just had enough). And Mclaughlin is just one of those a freak athletes - has been all the way up through juniors.

The new track helps the spinters as well - it's soft without being too bouncy (think thick carpet, rather than a trampoline). It doesn't help the sprint hurdlers - they want as hard a track as possible - no bounce for preference.

Michelle Jenneke ran a PB 12.66, broke her PB from 2015 of 12.82 but finished 11th fastest in the semis.

But Nigerian Amusan set a WR of 12.12 in her semi.

7 of the top 11 and 5 of the 8 finalists are from commonwealth countries, so if they all rock up to Birmingham and all run like they did the semis at least it will be a world class race at the comm games.

Ash Maloney pulled out at Pole Vault so no medal for him. Cedric Dubler is hanging onto a top 10 slot.

Brooke Bushkuehl was about 6th after the first round in the long jump. Top 8 or 9 jumped well then the fouls started.

Ingerbritsen ran a smart 5000m race and dominated the last lap and won well even a little celebration. Makes up for the loss in the 1500m.
