Got to agree with Fev and Mal. Andrews is living on reputation. His reputation is WAY greater than the reality. He's got that drunken giraffe look to him that seems to characterize his performances in the last 2 years.

The situation with Harris is an emergency. He's a pillar for us that allows the other defenders to flourish. His poor performances and attitude seem to have destroyed our backline cohesion.

He needs a fresh start.

I'm sick of giving Harris Mulligans.

He just doesn't contest well or not at all on occasions.

Surely he must be carrying something . Yesterday he was abysmal in several contests.

Plus we still haven't worked out where to play him . Putting him head to head with a gorilla on the last line has never worked.

Are we ever going to work this out ??

Zorko on the news tonight. Ball movement and defence in 2nd half was bad and couldn't stop momentum. Need to fight through harder when teams come at them. Leadership group need to stand up. Pretty standard stuff.

Zorko needs to stand up. It was a disgraceful on field display by our captain.

Yesterday i read the first 12 pages of this thread. Only just read page 20 now
As expected a dump on just about everything and everyone
I was also very disappointed in our 2nd half effort
It was like a different game plan was rolled out for the 2nd half by both teams

We played so well in the first half i doubt any team could have matched us in that period so that's a positive

I was thinking we may be a little bit short with 2 of our 3 KPD defenders listed as 192cm being Adams & Gardiner
However looking at the Demons and Cat's 2nd tier KPD they are not overly tall. Just good marks and mobile defenders
Maybe a change and drop one of Adams or Gardiner. Prefer to drop Gardiner as Adams takes way more marks

Who could come in assuming (my assumption only) that these players are safe. Andrews - Adams- Starcevich- Rich - Coleman - Answerth
Maybe go with Cockatoo 185cm as he is mobile enough. So out Gardiner in Starcevich
Ah Chee 183cm is fine in defense but i thought he was playing well on the wing until he started to get moved around once again
Madden 188 cm is also a mobile defender
Then we get taller again with Payne 197cm but he is fairly mobile

My 7 defenders for the Blues game in order of slowness
Andrews- Rich - Adams - Cockatoo - Starcevich - Answerth -.................. Coleman

I think Andrews needs to play as our 3rd big tall defender and have Adams and Payne take the 2 big forwards. Gardiner can get in the pine. Rich, Coleman and Starcevich as the rest of the backline with Answerth and Ah Chee able to support

Payne should've played all along this year regardless of form or getting beaten here n there.

He's our future, its criminal he's being bounced around.

Called it last week that Cumberland would destroy us. Like Bailey was the hero for us the week after he was denied the match winning goal. It just had that feeling about it, different circumstances obviously Cumberland wasn't aware how much time was left and Bailey was screwed by an umpire that decided to turn a blind eye.

Is Harris that much better anyway ? I'm not a huge wrap for Payne but a season of games could do wonders for him.

I'm happy to put anyone in for Answerth. He doesn't have the skill set for a running defender but doesn't really lock down either. We've had him in all year. Once again ,not convinced on Madden ,but he has that extra yard of pace and couldn't be much worse overall.

The mantra here for a couple of years has been that the coaches know what's going on and they persist with the players they know are better than others. Time for a reset on everything. Including what the coaches preconceived thoughts are. He that gets left will be he who has stalled. Why don't we shake it up and see where that gets us.

I said this after the Melbourne game. Too many too comfortable ,not enough accountability.

From AFL 360: Since round 10 the only teams to have conceded more points than the Lions are West Coast and North. In the same period we have conceded the most points from defensive half and we're the 4th easiest team to score against once the ball has entered the forward 50. Not sure how the last one is measured but that is disgraceful for a team competing for the top 4. We absolutely stink defensively.

It's not all the fault of our defence but yesterday we had too many slow coaches in the back half who couldn't jump and contest either.

It's evident Starc was holding things together down there in a way.

If that isn't a wake up call them what is?

Trent Cotchin, Richmond, has been charged with Misconduct against Dayne Zorko, Brisbane Lions, during the first quarter of the Round 20 match between Richmond and the Brisbane Lions played at the MCG on Sunday 31 July, 2022.

In summary, the player can accept a $1000 sanction with an early plea.

Apart from continuing to confirm Cotchin is one of the dirtier snipers in the league, I wonder if the free kick Zorko gave away was in retaliation. Not excusing it obviously.

Said earlier in the year that whilst I certainly don’t believe we always put in as much as we could with our transition defence, I think what exacerbates the issue is we just don’t have the speed over the ground to be able to cover anyway.

You might have all the intentions in the world to push defensively but unfortunately you can’t coach speed, so I think it’s a “physical limitation” personnel issue as well as any possible mental issues with regards to defending.

The issue is that this is our 3rd wake up call in 6 weeks.

You’d have thought going out in straight sets in the finals last year was enough of a wake up call

Jack Payne was a horror show when matched up on Wright in the Essendon match. Never seen a player give up after a few metres so easy. He has a long way to go to be a regular AFL player.
Have you been watching Andrews this year? Wright absolutely torched him earlier in the year as well, and several other times like yesterday. And he gives up way more than Payne imo. But he is played week in week out with the same outcome. Payne has one poor game and is dropped. Very short sighted imo. And Gardiner can play shockers regularly and never gets dropped either. Andrews was given a large number of games early on to develop into a decent defender,as was Gardiner but others like Payne and Madden get ditched after one or two games which totally destroys their confidence. Time for a change, surely.

Didn't insinuate at all it's solely the fault of our defence, it's a whole team issue but imo the most glaring deficiencies are in the midfield.

Happy for Madden or Cockatoo to get a go over Gardiner
We need to change things a bit but not to much at this time of the year
Gardiner has looked a little sore and lost for a while now
