Of course the outcome is relevant in grading these acts, but currently the AFL is way too reliant on it. I’m not even talking about the Cripps case here. Acts like the Maynard one earlier in the year are simply going to happen playing the game. He goes up for a spoil, hits the ball, then clips the player, the player loses balance and hits the ground and whiplashes his head. There is absolutely no malice in that play, it’s a football act you will see 50 times a game without a player getting concussed. Yet Maynard cops two weeks for that action.

Compared to Jai Culley deliberately elbowing Anderson in the head after Anderson had ran past him. This is not a football action, simply a dog hit and had much higher potential to cause genuine injury and concussion. But don’t worry because Anderson ran out the game, so only two weeks, same as Maynard for a much worse action.

Absolute joke.
I agree with this. Footy acts should be graded on outcome as it is the only thing that is absolute in the whole process. Dog acts should be on intent and they should have higher penalties than footy acts gone wrong.

People just think outcome is a bad system when it is their player in the gun. Wait to it's their gun player concussed for 2 weeks and they will be baying for blood if the other player gets off because he's a good bloke who made a mistake.

stewart got 4 instead of 6 via the 'good bloke' discount

Lol, Carlton would want to get up with this appeal here after slinging some mud tonight.

Now we're onto the "bump" as the Tribunal found it to be on Tuesday night.
Cripps' counsel is highly critical of this term.
Townshend says a bump is a "decision", but the Tribunal found both Cripps and Ah Chee had eyes for the football and they both contested the ball. Therefore, no "decision" from Cripps to bump.
"This is where the Tribunal goes on a frolic and journey," Townshend says.

You do realise Carlton players will likely have to face MRO and Tribunal process again right???

I disagree, I would explain the whole thing but don't want to fuel Richmond incidents in a Carlton thread. Not every thread has to be about Richmond.
i only raise it because its a perfect example of what you were saying about a gun player being taken out and the opposition being given the good bloke discount.

theyre really going buck wild with the legal mudslinging shenanigans arent they. at this rate theyll go to the high court if the fail here

Time to take the lawyers out of this and stick strictly to football language. Bottomline he bumped, contacted the bloke high which was a severe impact resulting in concussion. Under AFL gradings, this is a two week suspension. Also if the appeal gets up, the credibility of Christian and the tribunal which sat is under threat. It also gives licence for players to bump with impunity.

Assuming he successfully pulls off an attempt to contest the ball like this...

He's in the air, at speed, sideways, both arms cradling the ball to his chest (but not a mark) and contact from opponent . Then what?

Or... he was going the bump.
He's a contested bull. He backs himself to win the contest, break free from any tackles and dispose of the ball. Have you not watched Cripps play before? It's literally what he does. Never plays the man and has never been suspended or even reported (at any level) prior to this.

I watched him play v Eagles last year at Docklands, at one point he got a free kick and managed to fall over not once but twice while going back to take it

Yeah awesome player
