Its not even that. How many kids have we failed to develop that were drafted by SOS? Class of 2015 were for the most part gems. Everything else post that though? Much more misses than hits. I'm actually genuinely worried we have screwed our rebuild.
And how many have continued and prospered?
Its not an exact science and a huge percentage of players drafted by all clubs dont meet perceived potential.

Its not exclusive to the Carlton Football Club

Time will tell if this is the right call or not, I personally liked his hardness as he brought an element that we didn’t have much of on the list.

Couldn’t break into the midfield and we have too many half backs so I don’t mind this call and it’s clearly a statement of intent that we’re becoming more ruthless as a club.

I said it last week and I'll say it again. Overweight and out of shape by AFL standards. Clearly Voss wasn't impressed.

And no I'm not a Stocker hater, I loved his hip and shoulders on oppo players and some of the aggression he had... but you have to be able to stay with ur man for 4qtrs and apply manic pressure. He quite simply, could not.

Hawks butchered most of their high picks after the super haul in 2014 - they did alright in the end

There must be more to this story. There simply has to be. On paper it makes no sense. Unless we've low balled him with a one year or rookie contract and he has snubbed us. Even so, I'm shocked he has zero trade value. SPS was traded for pick 52. Surely we could have gotten at least that for Stocker? How many picks will GWS have...surely they'd give us a pick in the 30s or 40s, pending of course him wanting to go there...

I'm sorry, but I completely disagree with this.

  • Why would Strength training need to be reduced to lower his body weight?
Body weight will be influenced directly by whether or not the athlete is in a caloric deficit or not. If he is in a caloric deficit, he will lose weight. If he is not, he will maintain. If he is in a surplus, he will gain weight.

How on earth would the reduction in workload with a slight caloric reduction yield anything but a neutral result?

  • Too big to be a running defender? He's 86kg and just under 6'1. There are plenty of athletes in the competition who have insane cardio regardless of their size. It's largely irrelevant. Nik Cox would beat Zac Fisher in a 2km TT for example.

  • "Central adiposity" ???????????? He is ripped as hell through the midsection? Have you seen what Newman looks like with his top off? Newman barely looks like an athlete, yet he is a high performance machine who can run all day. Unless he was genuinely fat, it would not affect his ability to perform. Anyway, not a problem for Stocker who is seen sporting a six-pack year round..

I'm an experienced strength athlete who has a friend who works in the Strength and Conditioning dept. for a big Melbourne based club. I look at Stocker and think he is one of the most gifted on our team, second to maybe Cripps or McKay in terms of his ability to pack on contractile tissue. His muscle mass and level of bodyfat is of no concern to me. Dustin Martin and JDG are similar dimensions but instead of lean muscle, they have fat. Neither of them are negatively influenced by this either. Luke Hodge is probably the most similar to Stock but even he pales in comparison to Stockers body composition.
Good post. Your first point seems so simple yet it takes years to get though the minefield of misinformation and marketing in the fitness industry to get there. Some never get it.

Both are worse than average Kicks but have other strengths
Stocker is an elite kick of which we have less of than most teams but other weakness that can be built on
He's an elite kick in the VFL, not in the AFL. He often made mistakes by foot and generally looked a cut below in terms of ball use when playing in the 1s. Not sure if that was due to confidence, pace of the game or what but he most certainly never showed his elite skills in the AFL.

Tbh he really isnt in our best 22 if everyone is fit

No way he fits in the midfield mix. Too many ahead of him

Newman, Saad, Doch, Boyd, Marchbank and Williams all ahead of him
Agree hes not best 22. But at worst hes solid depth. In any case still doesnt explain why he was delisted and not traded

Mentioned this the other day, were not unearthing talent like other clubs and it's a real indictment on our people
Boyd has shown great signs and I expect him to be best 22 come round one. Owies (yes he has his limitations) is close to best 22. Young and Newman are best 22 and arrived for peanuts. Cottrell. Durdin was a 3rd round selection as was Carroll (who is still only 19). I'm excited to see what Austin does with a full go at it (assuming we hold onto our 1st-3rd selections).

Really odd we didn't wait until after trade week for the Stocker delisting. Sounds like there's more to the story, but someone will probably offer him a spot.

And oppo small forwards closed any space he found himself in very quickly and he usually disposed of the ball under pressure because of this. And as a coach, you dont want that obviously.
He is just too slow.

I wish it wasnt the case, but it is what it is unfortunately [emoji2369]
