Somewhat agree but forget Port. Trade him to an Adelaide team - the one that offers us the best deal.
I’m tired of players forcing trades to specific clubs. They aren’t free agents. If he wants to return to SA, any SA team should do.
The Crows are already all in on Rankin and Gav Wang is a Port legend so it will be Port. But I agree 100% in principle.

Extension was put in front of him. Knocked back. Port don't have the goods to trade and unless we want to give him for less than trade value we need to keep him.
Rather keep him, but we'll get friggn reamed if we goes at the end of next year. And they have plenty enough to facilitate a trade this year.

Peeps want to look at the last few years of our FRDPs

2019 - Gone on Hill
2020 - P26 - Allison
2021 - P11 - NWM

If we lose Wnag and Hill for SFA then we may as well trade Steele, Marshal and Sinclair now.

I really don't think anything is going to happen with NWM this year.

If Nasiah was really going to be traded, I think we would be hearing a bit more about it. At this stage there are just BF rumours and no journalists have actually mentioned it. Obviously he hasn't re-signed yet so there is something there, but I think we would still be backing ourselves to keep him.

I guess he would be uncontracted at next trade period, but I still don't think his trade value decreases that much (particularly as he will have another season to show how good he can be).

But at this stage, he looks to be the player that we thought Hill would be. We need damaging kicks and he is certainly that. I would be banking on him feeling more settled after another year being at Moorabbin. We have had a pretty good track record of keeping players so have a feeling it could all end up being a bit of a storm in a teacup.

If this was the NBA perhaps. But the player needs to approve the trade as well.

Then why do we have free agency?

We don't have full free agency.

A restricted-freeagent player can nominate a club to go to. But their original club has the opportunity to match the contract offer and if the player still wants to leave then they need to organise a trade.

If the club doesn't match then it is up to the AFL to decide a compensation pick.

If this was NBA Free Agency then the clubs wouldn't get compensation picks.

This is a hybrid model because the clubs would have asked for the power to move players on without their consent. Players didn't want that to happen.

it's clear as day we need to hit the draft.. whitfield's a gun but we're not topping up to challenge, we need to rebuild properly, we've half assed it for a decade and it hasn't worked

I think that they think we are close. Melbourne and Richmond were in the same spot before coming good. I just hope that we add talent but keep picks for the draft. If this falls over you want to be starting from a better position. Not stacked with old guys on big money with no youth.

Don't worry - not going anywhere. Will re-sign early in the New Year.

Three quality young players in last year's draft. Hopefully at least 1or 2 more this year. Let's hope Max Heath comes on like we want and future should be looking alright

Watching our old team on YouTube recently

Where did we get Roo, BJ, Lenny, Dal, Joey?

Yes we had bad luck with Paddy, but we haven't used picks well, generally speaking, for a long time.

This is true but it is also harder than ever to keep young talent which is drafted without success.

Those players got belted for years, now with free agency, homesick players and injuries you can't afford that.

People also forget players like G Train, Milne, Hammil, Guerra, Penny, Gardiner, King, Powell, Ray, Schneider, Dempster and I'm sure more who were all brought in during those players time building towards grand final appearances.

The answer has always been a combination of draft and other means not one or the other. If a Whitfield et al gets brought in and takes Kent's spot on the list that is imo a better strategy than a 3rd round+ draft pick.

I'm not confident after they shat the bed again but we are in an awkward spot where we are either frustratingly close or a frustratingly long way off. We don't have a lot of under 22s on the list so really need to come good now and keep topping that under 22 pool up at the same time with our high picks.

It's going to be a real line in the sand season next year. Fail to fire again and they will have to go hard at a footy department restructure and player list changes. Get into finals and fall out and it will buy a reprieve but it won't give us a lot of answers either way. Ratts really needs to have a strong top 4 crack and win at least a final to shake his detractors and probably definitely keep his job.

Champions come high in the draft, hardly ever get traded without issues and cost a fortune that way. We have to draft ours and they probably take 4 or 5 years to impact so just keep topping the pool and hope the lottery comes in.

He's not what he was but they've all checked out up there. If you got him cheap he's an elite level player. I don't think he's injured is he?
Whitfield is an absolute gun. He's fast, covers a lot of ground and is a beautiful kick off both sides. In '18,'19,'20 there was no better decision maker in the comp in my opinion. Around then my brothers and I posed the hypothetical 'if the saints could pick one player from any team...' I had Whitfield in a heartbeat.
He's had a horror run with injuries the past couple of years. In '21 preseason training he got a bad knock which resulted in a bruised liver. It got worse and his liver inflated like a balloon which pushed up against his lungs. He couldn't run or do any strenuous exercise for months and missed the first six rounds. He started to look good as the '21 season progressed but missed another couple of games with a concussion. Of the eight games he didn't play that year GWS lost seven and they made the semis. He was back to his best at the end of the year, starring in round 21 with 34 disposals in their win against Geelong at GMBHA. Backed it up a few weeks later with another 34 disposals in the semi final loss to Geelong.
This year he looked ripe and ready to go after a full preseason but copped an an ankle injury early on which the club decided to 'manage', delaying an operation till the end of the season. He admitted he wasn't able to run the kilometres he would've liked and as GWS's season imploded he was one of the most relocated deck chairs on the Titanic. As Leon Cameron went into full panic mode he was played at centre bounces, wing, half back and half forward, sometimes all in the one game. He never got any flow with his game this year and missed another couple of games late with a hip flexor injury which didn't help. He's obviously had less impact this year but that's understandable (unlike Nick Haynes who seems half the player he was for no apparent reason). If he can make a full recovery from the ankle injury I'd be all over him like a rash. None of his injuries are related and we're not talking hamstrings and calves.
Someone said we don't need another 29 year old so it's worth pointing out that Whitfield turned 28 about 7 weeks ago. Plenty of good football left in him.
He's got 4 years left on his contract at roughly a million a year. Wouldn't want to pay that but if GWS want him off their books and are prepared to do a 'Treloar' and pay 250/300 of his salary I'm all in. Would be a massive upgrade on Hill.

No one knows what the future look's like but you have to be feeling a lot better with what we have coming through in our youth ranks compared what we have had for the last 10 odd years.
With King we have the best young forward in the game and is developing fine , he kicked over 50 goals the first guy to do sine Milne 10 yrs ago.
We have a whole bunch of kids of age ready to show the ability now in Coffield - 22 , Clark - 23 , Higgins - 23 , Battle - 24 , Paton - 23 and on top of that we have Windhager , Owens and Milera who all look like exceptional talents.
Add on players like Byrne - 21, Connolly - 21 , Allison - 20 , Heath - 19 , Bytel - 22 who are still to young to make a judgement on.

In saying this if we play King , Higgins , Coffield , Clark , Milera , Windhager , Battle , Sharman , Paton , Owens --- half of our starting line up averages out at 22 so I wouldn't be worrying about the age of our list because we are in top shape and having most of our other talent not even 27 yet in Steele , Howard , Marshall , Wilkie , Butler we now have leaders for our inexperienced kids to develop under and when Membery , Hill , Crouch , Ross are pensioned off we should have the talent through to take the reins.

Also have a full hand in the draft for the first time in years is only going to boost the talent in the side.

If we end up with King / Lockett , Windhager / Selwood , Owens / Dangerfield - we have a team to play for a flag.

I really think we need to increase the amount of numbers we can run through the middle so we can maintain pressure and run with and without the ball. Our mid rotations seem limited.

Whilst Tarryn Thomas not getting a game for north is a concern, I think we try to turn Hill into Tarryn. Adds to the midfield and can play outside or forward.

Mitchell on the cheap will also reduce the reliance on Steele on the inside. I am all for Steele spending a little more time forward. And Gresham for that matter.

Tanner Bruhn is another we should be pitching too.

And please sign Ben Long up Immediately.
I like the Thomas idea and we should be having a crack at him, same with Bruhn.

I think this year is a golden opportunity to secure that mid base and get them playing as a group. I would be happy to trade out future 1st and 2nd for a good deal.

If it is so that we get rid of HILL's qualities in some trade deal we certainly need a HOIST in some fashion or another. ``CLARKO may see himself as the second coming but he's no YABBY imo. Why he thinks he can use HILL is probably connected with our complete ineptness at exploiting his abilities consistently at the SAINTS....We have to exceed at a 'better than' replacement trade for him or we get seen as the Health Care Card piteous SAINTS...which by and large we are.
If we loose WANG-CHUN then we may as well put a sign out....'please be gentle...Rent Free'. Its not just about the reality its about the perception ..... ins and outs...pffft

Whitfield is a great kick. It's what we've been sorely lacking.

We'd have to look at it if GWS just wanted to move on from him, so were prepared to not take high picks. I struggle to see that happening though.

They are pretty stretched on SC. Maybe a complete SC dump. If we don't get DeGoey (looks like thats true) and we lose Hill, we will have a shitload of SC. We could take the lot for a 3rd rounder
