That's great for you, every club should be able to play home finals at their home ground. Just makes a farce of a situation where the AFL says that clubs have to play finals in their city's biggest stadium, yet GWS and Sydney don't and Geelong has to play finals in another city....
The stadium at Olympic Park in Sydney takes about a month to configure into an AFL ground with their updated changes to the ground. Taking into account NRL finals its an impossible turn around time.

What prevents non-Grand Finals at the MCG from being 100,000? I read the seated capacity is 95k so it can't be lack of standing room.
I'm sure they could've got 10k extra tonight and last week.
The reason is arrogant and entitled season members who don't show up. Take West Coast for example, sell out most games at Optus but always fall 10k short of capacity. The two Carlton-Collingwood games this year sold out and had 80k and 88k.

The AFL needs to sort this out and look at overseas leagues (NFL, EPL etc.) to see how they fill the stadiums week in week out. No doubt in my mind that the AFL could have full stadiums for home and away games regularly if we overhauled the ticketing structure.
The MCC looked 3-4k short of capacity as there were a lot of gaps in there.
The toffs were still salty about the Melbourne game.

The ratings for afl depend a lot on if it's a close game or not. A sport that goes over 2.5 hours is a long time for viewers to maintain interest if it doesn't look close, that's why week one rated so highly.

Well that and ch7 actually put the games on the main channel in most states. Imagine the ratings if they actually cared about the game and put it on 7 main in every city, would have been even bigger. w***ers.

I'll be honest, I don't lose too much sleep over where the game is shown.
The numbers on those secondary channels, including the NOrthern markets, are actually not too bad.
The Networks have to make it work for them once they've paid their money, and if they think that works best for them, good luck to them, as long as we continue banking the money, does it matter all that much?

I think it makes a massive difference.

  • The perception of the product being second rate enough to put on secondary channels, especially when it happens for big finals.
  • the fact in developing markets you are losing 30 to 50 percent of potential viewers in new markets for each game (on a prelim final you could effectively lose 100k viewers).
  • the advertising of the game not as visible on secondary channels, it has to be in people's face continually in markets where there is next to zero other exposure in local media.

As a viewer, I don’t care if the footy is on 7, 7two or 7mate. It just takes an extra 10 seconds to flick to the other channels to figure it out.

EPL and NFL attendances are tickets sold, not bums on seats.

But casual viewers do care and don't bother to switch to what they perceive as second rate channels with mostly reruns and crap shows.

I also think the advertisers paying big bucks for the AFL finals would also NOT be impressed with 7s decisions!

There's a great twitter account called "Empty seats galore" which takes the piss out of announced crowd figures while showing shots of the actual crowd - which is sometimes a tiny fraction of the announced figure.
Surely thet don't use the announced crowd figures as the official crowd figures in those circumstances?

This finals series is on target to have a higher attendance than all others except 2018 and 2010 (which had an extra GF).

Assuming around 100k for the GF we would need 100k between the two preliminaries to surpass 2009 in current 3rd spot.

You’d think at least 70k at the MCG, and 45k at the SCG. Should get there comfortably

I note with interest the the Storm Final yesterday at AAMI played before the AFL match only had 20,800 = two thirds full for and elimination final!
The timing was bad for those also wanting to attend the AFL. If the NRL started at 4pm fans would have comfortably been able to attend both.

Just spoke to my mate in Sydney, an scg member. Both himself and he got 4 of his staff to login to Ticketek or whatever ready at 12pm to buy tickets, not one of them got through, scg members sold out in less than 5 minutes by the sounds of it. He has never missed out on tickets to any sporting event he wanted to go to before.
