was he a mid before? wow, you learn something every day

thanks

Not 100% sure if he was a mid, but I'm fairly certain he was either delisted (or traded for not much ) by Essendon, Collingwood, and the Bulldogs before Choco gave him a lifeline.

I do remember him not getting a kick in his first game for Port and being referred to as a spud by a number of posters on that site that no-one likes to mention on this one.
All was forgiven after he played in the 2004 flag though.

Josh Mahoney was a small forward flanker full stop. Played that role at Collingwood and I am certain that was his role at Western Bulldogs after being traded there. I think it was three years after he was delisted by the bullies that we picked him up, as a small forward flanker. And guess what, he played well as a small forward flanker.

He was captain and getting 30-40 touches a game as a mid in the VFL when we picked him up.

Choco says he was picked up as a back up on baller.

If we wanted a small pressure forward why didn't we just retain Will Snelling?

Could surprise wouldn't be easy coming to the club mid season without a AFL pre season behind you.

Hopefully Jed will get more game time in 2022. While Jed is a midfielder that we are trying to turn into a pressure forward, I think he has the tools to make an impact for us in 2023.
The only games he should be getting are the ones our medicos piss up the wall if the pair of fatties can't get out on the park.

Even then I'd pick the puttering mess that is dylan williams before him

I wish the best for him but he is a role player and ideally you want your role players to be (a) better than he currently is and (b) with more scope for improvement.

Jed is fine. He's the sort of player you want on the list so that if you don't need to change team structure if injuries occur but also hope they aren't playing each week.

He's a limited player but we've seen he can play a role and whilst unlikely to ever be winning us games he's also unlikely to cost us games too.

Could just as well kept Will Snelling on the list.

Not really. Snelling’s lack of pace meant he had one position. McEntee is faster and a pretty good tackler. It means he can play pressure forward (but needs to develop a goal sense), midfield or as a tagger possibly. Difference between the two ex-Mercedes boys is that McEntee has more AFL traits.

Look, I don’t think he will make it either but I have been wrong before- Roger James being the classic example. It took him until about 22 or 23 to be able to play in the guts at AFL level and then he went supernova. While McEntee doesn’t have the skill set of James, he could develop into a ball winning/tackling terrier that nullifies their best mid.

I am not prepared to write him off completely yet.

Will Snelling came third in Essendons best and fairest in 2021 when they made the finals. He was injured for most of this year. Jed is nowhere near the level if Will.
