STATE OF PLAY:
  • The game is out for Steam and PlayStation. There have been issues with Xbox release and it is unclear when the game will be available.
  • Big Ant are aware that there are playability issues & bugs at present.
  • Content has been temporarily removed from the game to identify where the issues lie.
  • This content will be re-introduced via patches in the coming days.
  • Big Ant have released a summary of what is to be reintroduced, which can be seen below.

For all the games faults on launch and areas of improvement, I do chuckle at some people blaming the game for some technical aspects that are quite good such as tempo football and kicking. The kick-mark aspect of this game is already quite good (when the kick doesn't glitch and kick 100 m behind the player) meanwhile you can choose to play fast footy if you want. Both are viable and have different risks involved much like AFL football.

I am hopeful once the bugs and issues are fixed, it'll be quite fun to play. We can hope.

Once being able to turn 360 degrees as you please is implemented, it'd be awesome.
 
It takes longer to fill the meter up in 23, and less controllable. The fact you can't turn and twist is also a factor in why it's inferior.

I think you’re just finding things you dont like more than anything else. The kicking in Live 1 felt really similar to me and even then, the ball would bounce once in Live 1 and die lol. It was harder back then to link up kicks because it was way more congested of a game. The turn issue will be rectified soon anyhow so lets see if its better.
 
Definitely not my favourite sports game, it's a very rough around the edges game, but it's just the best Aussie Rules ever got to a decent video game. I've also cited other video games as examples to study from, which are light years ahead of Live 1.

Fair enough! I do respect you for the bug videos you're sharing. Most wouldn't bother (or can't because their preferred version is MIA).

Agree with you that the lack of control is the biggest issue in gameplay terms. The crashing that still appears to be pretty constant needs to be their priority though. I doubt we'll see an Xbox version until that is resolved.

I gave examples as to why it's not as good, you need to be facing the area you're going to kick to get precision, which in 23 is not as possible as you please, like it is in Live 1. The meter bar should be changed to be filled up faster, since the game is even more fast paced than Live 1. Live 1 the meter bar was also slow, too, but faster than 23. But I do like the grabber kicks out of all the kicking mechanics in 23.

BigAnt, any chance the PS updates will be posted and available to play tonight? Or is it more likely to see it downloadable tomorrow morning like the others?

Is there another Steam gameplay patch coming up? It's getting a bit confusing between the PS updates and Steam updates.

If you play mark kick, mark kick and contested, it's less noticeable, but I like to play a more possession, hand ball game, which requires being able to twist and turn.

Fair, I usually do like that style too, but I think due to the currently less than perfect handballing, I've been avoiding it as much as possible.
 
They've messed up a lot of other things. Once you're tackled, you can't even get a kick or hand ball away, you just go down and you're pinned. I heard in the demo it was the complete opposite, though.

You can't hand pass short or even 10 metres if you have an opposition player in front of you, no matter what, or it'd be intercepted, which is really bogus, because Live 1 allows for short hand passes and kicks in front of the opposition. It'd only be smothered if an opposition player was super close in Live 1.

Also, they've got the same terrible mechanic from Evo 2, where you can can't rotate on where you've marked the ball and when you are looking for an option. That was a feature in Live 1, it's not in 23. This video is what I mean.


When tackled, try a clearing kick or handball. On Steam you get a decent success rate now.
 
Playing a few matches this morning, one slightly odd thing is it seemed like, standing next to each other, Patrick Cripps and Blake Acres were both taller than Harry McKay. But my PS version is obviously a few patches behind so not reading too much into it, nor is it really one of the pressing issues.

Will 50m penalties be in the game?

So many times randomly an opponent will just be in my protected zone and in my way.

Most of the times it looks like the player is there randomly due to a glitch tho.
Sometimes i press L1 and i can change player
Sometimes i Press L1 and i cant control anyone besides the still player on the mark

WW never fixed it either. Used to do my head in
 
Gameplay-wise, i know the developers are trying to enhance the fluidity and eliminate bugs. However, can we anticipate the inclusion of additional animations as well? From watching online gameplay, a significant number of animations, especially marking, appear to be repetitive. I remember there being an aerial collision in one of the trailers that ive yet to see in the game. Hoping to see more variety in these areas
