I think Caddy could be a great investment for the future but I think the club want a player that could have more of an immediate impact. Curtin probably the most likely chance that might be available.

Would love Curtin but think we should stick to drafting a Victorian’s as seems to be a lot of people wanting to go home these days. So O’Sullivan and Caddy for me couple of Victorian Bookends for the future.

Eh, go home factor is annoying but we've been very well compensated from the Hogan and LJ trades.

I'm not across the u/18s but Curtin seems highly rated. If he's there grab him

What does the top end of the 2024 draft look like?

Hypothetically, if Curtin is available at our pick, would Wet Toast bite on a pick 6 for F1 swap?

It's got to be Curtin at 6 if he's still there, if not then I'd be going for Sanders. Sure it's not a huge need for us but at 6 you don't want speculative types, and he's certainly AFL quality.

O'Sullivan I don't mind, decent size plus he moves and competes well. Disposal by foot is a bit iffy for mine, a bit like Lever in that sense. He feels more like a 7-10 guy (excluding Walter etc.).

Caddy is a similar type forward to JVR in my opinion. I wouldn't be going near him at pick 6, he's more an 11 guy and if he's gone before our pick there I wouldn't be upset. Just because we desperately need a young developing key forward doesn't mean we should just grab the first one we see (ahem Jefferson). Roo needs to be at least a number two guy and Caddy won't be able to help with that.

Watson is a definite no for me, I just don't see the hype.

After losing Jackson and now Petty next year, I'm surprised people are so keen on Curtin. It arguably cost us the flag this year with the Grundy shenanigans. With player movement and free agency in full steam, I'm spooked off taking an interstate player.

Picking up a player we don't rate and doesn't fit our needs would be more likely to cost us a flag than a player requesting a trade.

I think it will come down to a few things.

1. Do we have Joel smith in 2024
2. Does the club see Jefferson as a full time forward? (He has put on 10kg since drafted, now is at 86kg, 3 kg heavier than Jye Amiss)
3. Does the club expect Oliver to play in 2024 to full capacity

If Oliver is unlikely in 2024 we take Sanders straight up

If Smith is out and Jeffo is not looking likely, we take Caddy

If Oliver/Smith and Jeffo are looking likely in 2024, we take Curtin/O’Sullivan (Curtin if available and O’Sullivan if Curtin isn’t)

why would we be picking up a player we don't rate.?
Because in your scenario we're denying ourselves the player we rate as the best because they come from another state. Opting for second best seems silly when the vast majority of kids drafted don't even make it to 50 games.

This is so funny, we won a flag because of Jackson and Petty playing significant roles :drunk:

If we dont pick interstate kids we dont win a flag at all.

Even though that's exactly why West Coast are not going to take Harley Reid?

I would agree with you if the picks were more speculative like after 30 but picks 6 and 11 are great picks to have. Elite talent will be there

There's no guarantee of that. Eagles might very well still take Reid. Different anyway as they can get a good deal for Reid. Don't see them picking Curtin at 1.

The first round can be dicey as. Plenty of duds in that range. Picking the player we rate the most is always the best practice.

I agree they won't take Curtin at 1. But they have the option to take the best player in the draft but instead they're preferring to pick a guy that they 'don't rate' in Curtin over the generational Reid. That's what I took exception to the word 'don't rate' I'm sure we rate at least a dozen guys in this draft.

When a player leaves early in their contract it puts you back 5 years. Jackson made the AA squad this year and in the meantime Jefferson isn't performing in the afl and guys like Hayden Young and Tom Green were looking like the better choices. We've now got to use the freo pick this year, wait a few years for them to hopefully recover our losses. The same thing will happen with Petty next year.

I'd personally be leaning into Caddy and O'Sullivan and skip over Curtin

The comparison with the Eagles doesn't work because they would only do the deal if the package of picks they could get for 1 would be worth more to them than Reid. Do you want to trade three first rounders for Reid? I don't, I think it would be a poor deal.

Your argument is about using pick 6 to select one of the available players and I believe you always take the best available (or best available for needs). Getting scared about the go home factor is how you end up with selections like Watts over Nic Naitanui

At the end of the day picking guys like Jackson and Pickett helped us win the flag in 2021. No guarantee we win anything whoever else we take with those selections. Also it's odd that you would point to Hayden Young, a Victorian playing for an interstate team (the go home factor doesn't seem to be an issue) and Tom Green, an academy selection we didn't have access to.

I would also question whether you prefer Caddy and O'Sullivan over Curtin on their talent or where they live. Personally I rate Curtin much higher than both of them especially at being able to impact early in his career.

Imagine being such a donkey you think it was the right decision to take Tambling over Buddy still because Buddy's from WA. Forget about the flags and the Colemans. He's not from Victoria so they don't count

Buddy left Hawthorn eventually so it was clearly the wrong choice. Set them back 5 years.
