I’d be surprised if Adelaide made multiple overtures to Essendon for their pick 13, and didn’t bother to inquire with Melbourne given Melbourne had the two picks earlier.

As soon as Sharp was still available after Essendon’s first two selections Adelaide would’ve been hitting up Melbourne, especially as they knew Melbourne didn’t rate Sharp and were never going to select him. There’s a much better chance of striking a deal with a club who doesn’t want your target anyway (Melbourne) than with a club that wants the same player you do (Essendon).

So what that suggests is Melbourne got an offer from Adelaide and said “No thanks, we like each of xTaylor and lPickett more than what you’re offering”.
