Butters running full-tilt through the middle of the ground is still one of the best things to watch in football.

A couple of takeaways:

- Wines looking much fitter than this time last year. He still shanks kicks but on the inside was strong. Just play him in the in and under role shovelling out and he’ll be fine.

- The Burgoyne, Jones, Sinn, Williams conundrum remains. Each show some sign but then some really poor decision making also.

- Soldo is a massive upgrade for us. Will give away a heap of 50s now he’s in our colours but the physicality and ability to mark around the ground is something we haven’t had in a ruck for a long long time.

- BZT can be a shut down defender for sure. His kick is a real worry though. Need those half backs cruising past at all times.

- McEntee has no place in the team. The ammo’s players showed more than him.

We can take a lot out of that trial game IMO. Of course all the star players showed their class. We saw some really nice growth from some of the young lads. BZT did some nice things. Soldo looks a lock, and Sinn has just shoved it right up the clacker of all his detractors!

Oh, and best of all ... No injuries. Well, bar for Rats' sore knee!

Wines looks 100% fitter; Sinn too. Burgoyne very good too (but he was bog in last year’s internal trial then had an ordinary year). BZT reads the ball well but seems to be poor in the contest. Evans has to stop making skill errors because he makes good position then fails to capitalise. All draftees showed promise but none put in a 4 quarter effort. Narkle good but just lacks that last 5%. Soldo better than Sweet.

Disappointing that no new forward said, ‘pick me instead of Jed”.

Soldo and Sweet are upgrades for sure. If Rata and BZT can be serviceable, we should be better than last year. Those two might take a little while.

MG's shot at goal, while only a single shot in a meaningless run, was still a bit concerning. Still, let's see what plays out.

Commentating was dreadful. Perhaps the two least knowledgeable Port supporters around calling the action.

I really liked Sinn’s game. Looked like the confident, classy player we hope he can be.

Scully, Soldo, BZT, Lorenz, Georgiades also impressed me. Shame that Mitch shanked that easy set shot again.

I walk away feeling better about our progress than I did last year. We certainly feel deep with AFL quality.

At the same time I certainly wasn't excited by our forward line or midfield. The fact so many of the top ups played so well probably said a bit there. Deep with quality, but Im still not convinced we have the quality that can win it all, nor the forward line game plan.

Didn't feel like there were many standouts or anything unexpected. If anything because Sinn has barely been mentioned the fact he looked fit and sharp was probably the biggest surprise.

SPP - starting where he left off last year, good attack and expect another competitive year

Marshall - kicked well, sat in 2nd gear most game though, out marked BZT a couple times and was our standout forward

Burgoyne - used the wing well, had a bunch of touches, still a bit to improve on but i'd be happy to see him line up on the wing

Sinn - looked like he had something to prove and showed a lot of pace and penetration in his kick. fingers crossed he stays fit as a full year would put him back on track

Soldo - miles ahead of Sweet, lightyears ahead of Lycett. Great pickup.

Sweet - a good backup option, he looks like he wants to compete but doesn't know how to put his body on the line yet. gentle giant vibes. see how he settles in here but i thought Vis and Sweet were line ball

Rioli - body looks good but he played like sh!t, hope he's just waiting for the real stuff to start, looked straight up uninterested.

Charleson - nice pick up, could play this year if we get some injuries.

Anastasopoulos - looked lively when he was around it. given our options up forward, any small forward should be an option this year.

Lorenz - still running through to the last quarter and kicked a nice goal late. all three draftees were impressive given their draft positions.

Georgiades - looks like he's over his injury... back to the Georgi we last saw this time last year, which wasn't spectacular but at least he has another chance to build on his game with a different forward structure this time.

Lord - He's being used in the ruck, so if he's half a full forward and half a ruckman, by gum he might just make it.

JHF - excellent, buckle up.

Butters - excellent, buckle up.

Rozee - looks like he'll hold the captaincy very well on his shoulders.

Dixon - don't want to see him playing at all tbh, he's mentally checked out, let him contribute some other way.... off field.

Scully - building nicely. He's where Lord was two years ago but i reckon he has a better kick than Lord.

Evans - one of the new draftees should get a game before him in the forward pocket.

Jones - looked lively, still erratic at times but he's got spirit and that's a massive advantage on say.......

DBJ - see above. (can't see how he gets a game this year - he's not a fwd, he's no longer a def)

Mead - had noticeably greater pace than a lot of the others out there. he looks to have taken a step up, let's hope he can make something of it this year as he won't have many more.

Bergman - did some nice things early, keen to see him with the full backline setup as i feel he'll thrive off the new structure without having to be third tall at times.

followed by a kick to congestion. Bugger all coast to coast link up play. Clearances featuring too many blind kicks, our old

stagers Boak n Wines too often kicking to pockets or racking up clangers. Sinn was really good, happy for the lad.

Scully one of my favourites coming along nicely and some of our newbies showing good signs.

In short the personnel hold promise but our overall structure tells me we're not putting the frighten'ers on good teams in Sept.

For a guy who’s been on a permanently modified program, he looked sharp, fit, speedy and match conditioned. A pleasant surprise.

Looks like talent better but still too many flaws with players being shit , old or too young and then horrific forward methods, top 6 with no chance of making the GF confirmed yet again
