We barely beat Adelaide & West Coast and we only beat North by 40.

I have seen enough to know we aren't doing anything of note this year, unless something dramatically changes.

Drew against pies and comfortably beat GWS when the whips were cracking. System stood up.
As a pies fan Essendon one of the 2 teams I fear the most.

If Essendon beat Carlton and Geelong in the next 5 weeks (given other games aren't as challenging), they will be in the box seat for a top 4 place whether they are pretenders or not. Other sides have stumbled and that is a big factor.

So those will be two of the biggest Essendon games in years. You basically need top 4 to win a flag so I'd consider winning both of those as more important than winning an EF.

Just enjoy being in the top eight and the improvement your side is showing this year. Carlton fans can worry about their own side's unconvincing form.

What about finishing 2nd with 17 wins, but losing both a QF and SF by a single point under ridiculous circumstances (awful umpiring decision 2 seconds before the siren, match winner to opposition from a 65m torp on the boundary in the other) while missing half of your best 22? Would that be better than scraping into 8th with 12 wins and winning an EF by a point before losing the SF by 100 points?

It's a good point, they are going to build up Gold Coast's and Essendon's etc as big scalps so that wins against them can be used as evidence for their own premiership assault lighting up again.
