What about the half volley pick up at full tilt by Durds at the 1:35 mark, followed by the pinpoint pass to Acres.

That's what we want to see more of from our small forwards in 2025.
Durd’s is pretty much an Optus Stadium specialist.

‘22 he was one of best kicks to a leading forward (until Collingwood in the final round and that pass in the last Q/mins).

Few highlights vs North there ;)

And quite a few where he just gets a gimme handball off other blokes' hard work, or it comes to him off a broken play (had forgotten that one where Charlie kicks into the man on the mark vs Sydney, oh boy :tearsofjoy:), not a whole lot there off his own boot.

Even that goal in the semi vs Melbourne, you've still gotta kick them I know and it was a great clutch goal but he was cheating so far forward of the contest it wasn't funny, hope he bought Curnow (the tackle) and Cotts (the gather and handball) a beer or 2.

End of the day, yeah I guess he was AFL standard in '23 but nowhere near it in '24. I remain unconvinced he'll make it long term.
We can all frame an argument.

I could point out that you ommitted the 50m set shot from the boundary, the two bounce running goal through the middle, the many genuine crumbers goals...and that you've talked down an epic contribution in our best win in years...creeping forward is what good small forwards do at times.

And the physicality and pressure...which he was clearly not capable of this year.

Anyhow, here is to an injury free run in 25.

I'm not seeing it that way. I see a young player who lost continuity with his body and therefore lost confidence.

He kicked 24 goals from 21 games as a 19 year old last season so I see an AFL quality player there.

In saying that, this pre-season is massive for him. If he can get his body right he may just surprise a few..
Agree

I still think he can be the best of his namesake, but he needs a good run with injury

I don't think he should've got games this year, and should've been given way more time to get fit - Durds the same

Motlop looks physically ready to handle big bodies now, which is obviously a huge plus. We just need him to get there with his cardio - which I'm sure is not for lack of trying, it's due to his horrid run with injury.

Fingers crossed, still optimistic.

in play it looks like everyone except our small forwards are aware of how we set up, to land it on harry or charlie's heads a big percentage of time. if that's happening, that's because they're getting sucked up the ground through gameplan or accountability. vossy would tell them to stay at home if he thought it was necessary.

I'd give $1000 for a highlights package of owies picking up a half volley cleanly whilst on the move.

I mean... yes, thats clearly a much better record than Motlop's?

1.0 goals per game vs 0.33 goals per game vs top 8 teams
If you take out the second Geelong game when we won by 11 goals, it’s 0.75 a game for Owies. Not too disimilar, with a larger sample size. Motlop played 6 less games against top 8 sides this year

Last season mots had 16 goals in 12 against top 8 teams. Owies had 12 in 10.

So this argument is pretty silly.

Mots is a goal kicker. Fit and hes got owies covered.

I'd suggest they're being told to focus on preventing the ball from being run out of defence if it goes to ground.

Not a fan of it personally, but if you feel like you don't have elite speed from your small forwards, it's a strategy.

I agree. I think you may have misinterpreted what I was saying. I believe Motlop, when fit, is far superior to Owies

Owies kicks goals but but but this that and the other so yeah let’s trade him …🤦

I mean we have H and Charlie so we don’t really need other goal kickers right unless it is crumbed 🙈
Don’t think anyone said that!!!

But anyways, seems the club doesn’t agree with you

Motlop, who gets a real rough time on here, has way, way more talent than Owies. Had a great year last year, stellar pre-season but sounds like his injury was mismanaged. Small frame, battling niggles, down on confidence & playing in the Seniors, tough gig for someone in the early stages of their career.

Will back him in to be a regular contributor for us if he stays fit.

Owies does tend to go missing against good sides. For a 'small fwd' he has absolutely zero tricks - nice to be a hard worker and nail a set shot, but it's not enough to compete with the best teams, a decent opponent will shut him down and burn him the other way. Small forwards need to rove packs, apply pressure, dribble goals & overall be a massive headache for the opposition, he's not really any of that.

I'd keep him as depth but if a club is willing to pay decent currency for him, I'd take it and run.

I like Owies, got the most out of himself as a limited footballer.

The more I think about it, the smarter it is to shop him around now... would his value ever be as high as it currently is? Chances aren't great...

The club has offered him a contract, lower than some other clubs, which isn't unusual.

By that contract, we have determined what his value is to us, if he decides to leave for more money, we get compensated, otherwise he stays

Think we need to step back a little on the Motlop criticism. Was an absolute crucial part of our SF win (his first final!) over Melbourne only 12 months ago. Kicked more than 20 goals in his second season - which is a good return.
Was injured in preseason 2024 and didn't get on the park until after the bye. Clearly lacked fitness and match conditioning and subsequently struggled.
Has loads of potential and needs to ensure his commitment matches the talent. Will be our first-pick small forward next year if he has a decent pre-season.

Mots will kick 50 next year if we can get him looking a bit like this dude.

I go back to our period early in the year when we were just bombing long to H and Charlie.

As someone joked, when Carlton get the ball at halfway, EVERYONE in the stadium knew where the ball was heading, EXCEPT OUR SMALL FORWARDS.

I think Motlop (and probably Fantasia) have better footy IQ.

I know. To let a player go and get the best trade value, you have to offer lower. We have done it before.
