Did we lose many "superstar" players during our 2001-04 era? With a squad as talented as ours, I think its impossible to keep everyone. And i'm not talking about fringe players, but some of our genuine superstar players as well. We can't give everyone a top contract, and it wouldn't surprise me if Western Australian clubs came in and offered him more than we could possibly give him. I hope we don't lose him though, as I rate him as one of our most important players. Was an unsung hero in the GF
I think only Des Headland considered himself a superstar when he leftDid we lose many "superstar" players during our 2001-04 era?
Without delving into it would Des Headland be the only one we lost we would of preferred to keep?
Some players would be willing to stay on a bit less $$$$ in order to be in a side slap bang in the Premiership window.
If the bolded is meant to be a remark aimed at what I posted earlier, you’ve either not understood the discussion or deliberately misinterpreting what I posted.Hasn't re-signed must be gone.... Other clubs will come at him with more money than we can offer. Fifth in the coaches votes in a grand final, but not worth a first round pick, only a second rounder....

Sam Day.Who was our last selection in the preseason draft?

From final regular season fixture 2024 (against soon to be QAFL Premiers Morningside
Ty Gallop - 8 Goals (could easily have been 10)
(It pays to watch more than 1 shot at goal before deriding someones kicking action .......)

You would think 16 votes in the Brownlow would do that (Des Headland)
I think they let Allen walk and we match, so they keep a Band One compensation pick and then trade their future first or something like it for Starce.
Another top five pick is more than we can offer in a trade that includes Starcevich.

Yeah because he left the LionsThen 26 in his next 114 games
Why are people talking about Starcevich like him leaving is a foregone conclusion? Have I missed something?
Reputable sources like "theTradeAtheist" reckon he's GAWN.
What's Gallop's style? Fast leading hit up or strong under the high ball?
Headland definitely. Caracella was another.Did we lose many "superstar" players during our 2001-04 era?

We lost a few that got stuck behind the 'log jam' that saw opportunity else where like Gram that went to Richmond, Hadley was it that went to Carlton and there was a bloke that went to Sydney that had a long run there as well in their backline.Headland definitely. Caracella was another.
We mainly lost guys who would develop into solid to very good players before they were at that point - Bolton and B. Voss comes to mind. (Or those really fringe like Shattock etc).
Add Morris from the year prior with the second highest average (3.0) behind Jed Walter.View attachment 2173350
We now have two of the top five players in terms of goals per game from this year's talent league on our list.

It's what Leigh Matthews warned the board about at the time, "if we go for glory and keep the team together we fall off a cliff for years loosing the development players".
I remember around the time Wayne Bennet was coaching the Broncos and he was ruthless getting rid of his stars before they finished their careers to keep the up and coming players. He sent Wally Lewis, Lazarus, Gilmister, Jackson and others on their way cleaning out his top end with a year or 2 left in their careers. He wrote about it in his book.
The Lions have so much talent now, maybe there is a time to let some go where we have good ones coming through to give us longer at the top. Mind you there could be 3 retirements next year (Zorko, Lester, McCarthy) that will take the lid off for a few. I think our recruiting team have a great long term view now and stick to that.
Can't profess to seeing a huge amount of him, but to me he looks like a Linc replacement. Of course Linc wasn't in the GF side, so....I still have no idea what sort of career McLachlan is going to have. Just knows how to kick goals, but how does he get into our best 22? I just don't see it. Projects like a Breust to me - hope he gets a chance to debut in 2025.
