Autopsy Some promising signs but Hawks too good

Especially when he followed it up a couple plays later, being pinged for holding the ball. Should’ve taken him off at that point. You can’t have your first team players blowing the game and then making sure it was over with another costly mistake soon after. It’s just not good enough.

I’d be happy to see Bice or Riak given a run…someone who can take an intercept mark/kick to their own team when clearing the ball out.

Also, why does Blakey get let off for his repeated mistakes? It’s been a solid half season now of him doing a great job of passing to the opposition.

The emotion has settled & the day after brings clarity.

But questions remain:

1. Will we ever see Grundy return to form?

2. If Cox values defence so much, why did he allow Will Day to remain free as a bird for the entire first half?

3. Where is the improvement coming from? None of our fringe players shone last night (unless you class Wicks as a fringe player).

My biggest worry remains the ruck. Grundy was towelled up yet again & it’s become a glaring problem.

just watched the highlights, with a focus on goals coming directly from dodgy free kicks. [emoji640] - [emoji637] the hawks way. That's the margin right there.

I felt like we also were hard done by for more “play on not [emoji637][emoji6[emoji640][emoji637]]” kicks that were called a mark [emoji637][emoji[emoji6[emoji640][emoji638]][emoji640][emoji6[emoji640][emoji638]]][emoji[emoji6[emoji640][emoji638]][emoji640][emoji6[emoji640][emoji638]]]/[emoji637][emoji[emoji6[emoji640][emoji638]][emoji640][emoji6[emoji640][emoji638]]][emoji[emoji6[emoji640][emoji638]][emoji640][emoji6[emoji640][emoji638]]] times prior to this year.

Yeah it's been a bit scattered.

Best - Chad had a fairly consistent game which was very pleasing (as someone who has lamented this), with key moments. Broke tackle attempts well. Couple of head scratching moments where he got caught in 2 minds, that high short kick streaming through the middle and a shot / delivery (?) from F50 to the right point post, but seemed to be when he thought of "team first" options instead of only going for it himself, so hard to get upset. Wicks (wow, a masterstroke so far). Lewis "dozen spoils" Melican (one of our most important players now, couple of blunders aside). Jordon (Mr Consistent). Amartey competed well, made contests on the ground, even when wet. Obviously our most prolific forward and oppo defenders panic a bit now, which bodes well.

Tale of 2 halves for McInerney, Paton and Corey W. They were poor or quiet (Corey), but then got going and turned things around.

Corey W looked so clean in particular, 2nd half. I certainly wouldn't be dropping him and hope he carries on into next week.

Hanily competed and put his body on the line. He's looked likely for me since he came to us in the MSD. Would be happy for him to play a full game next week.

Grundy won hitouts but just didn't look right. I suspect we'll keep playing him, though hopefully Ladhams has a big one tomorrow after being unwell last week / not rucking as much as I'd hoped.

Rowy tried, but an off night for him in terms of sticking tackles. Did use the ball nicely going forward a few times and an important goal.

McCartin competed well, but it's costing us down back.

Campbell, here we go, did some good defensive stuff, particularly thwarting a few Hawk attacks. Would obviously have liked him to get among the goals, but handballing / bounce deviation ruined his best chance. Pass to Amartey was how we need to do it, hopefully he can do that a few times a game in future. It wasn't a good game, but I won't write off his career like a few (not you 2011).

Blakey needs to be freed from being a KPD. Sure, he'll need to spoil at times, but can we use him to get the most out of his intercepting and rebound?

Not Florent, Rampe, Adams, and obviously Sheldrick's best games. Hayward was very quiet, but so seemed Sicily when Will went to him.

Roberts was solid, Papley buzzed around a bit, I think he had the sublime no look handball over his head in the middle, but hopefully builds on that. Lloyd also solid, couple of big defensive moments at half forward/wing and an early adventurous pass into the middle to set up an early goal.

Heeney seemed impacted by the forced headbutt for a while, got involved later. Reset and hopefully has a big one against the Lions.

One positive is that we've had a game to get some rust out, a few players turned things around after horrible starts. The Lions will be fronting up for their first and hopefully we take advantage.

Looks like Adams might miss. I'd consider Ladhams if he does well tomorrow. McLean (2 goals last week) or Buller (4) might make a case too. If none do, to push McCartin back, I'd consider Hamling in to help Melican and relieve Blakey of KPD duties, and given his VFL form, can swing forward if needed.

Early changes before VFL:

Out: Adams, Grundy
In: Hamling, Ladhams

Maybe switch Hanily into the 22 for Gus, but depends on whether we think we can get some added mid rotations from others.
Very thoughtful B86 and agree with most of it. I was there at the Randwick end and got a good look at the defence. I might add a little to your comments in order.
I saw a lot of Paton and he was extremely nervous. He lacks physicality and is too easily pushed aside, in contrast to Wicks, who is similar in size. For an experienced defender I was very unimpressed.
I've said about a million times that we need a second KPD. So ditto.
For mine Florent and Hayward both had very poor games. Lots has been said about Florent but I got a good look at Hayward on Sicily. Sicily was laughing at him - with good reason. Hayward made zero impact on him. He is not strong enough in the contest. Sicily just brushed him off. I'm not sure we have a player strong enough to play that role.
Pretty sure Heeney was tagged by Maginness.

Wicks was great, Jordan next best and Amartey probably gets a pass mark as well. That's where it ends.
Like everyone else very disappointed with the crap they served up last night. It's the same old story, too soft. Nowhere near strong enough in the contest, my cuddles are firmer than our tackles. No fight or spirit shown. When or where is it going to come from?
I agree with those saying most of them are waiting / expecting someone else to do it.
They are either not capable of playing hard uncompromising footy or they have their heads so far up their backsides they believe 90% effort is good enough to roll teams. Concerned to say the least

www.psychologistsrus.com.au would be a start

Probably harsh but I was quite disappointed in are young players. Campbell, Co Warner and Sheldrick.

Really thought it was time for these guys to step up, only one game but none of them look any better than before really.

Not sure we should expect the same from those 3.

If a Sheldrick, Corey Warner, Hanily get in I expect way less than a guy approaching 100 games.

While I wasn't very inspired by our younger 'less than 20 games' brigade, I do hope we do a little more than just rotate through the young/fringe players hoping something sticks.
I'm not as bullish on Sheldrick as others and he let the man and ball get past him too often last night, but still he atleast needs to be allowed to string a few games together if uninjured. Corey Warner similar. At least play them until the the first bye, if we just drop them they won't get the opportunity to improve. Hope these guys don't get dropped ahead of a Campbell or someone, if it comes down to a decision like that.
Hanily is harder to judge and was the one who looked ok in a little burst he to should play at least the next 2 games and be in the starting side. Forward pressure was as bad as ever so need to have a look at someone who might be prepared to provide it.

Really can't add much more than has been said, by some of the more sensible posters.

I usually have a chat to a few neutrals after a loss to get a unbiased idea of how the swans went.

TLDR. The Hawks wanted it more for 70% vs 30% of the game.
