We've got options now and, like last season, the expectations are finals.

It's easy to play rookies when the alternative is some dudlinger but playing Draper would mean someone decent misses out. Also easy when winning is seen as a bonus, unlike now.

Early test for Nicks.
I think playing Draper increases our chances of winning. Couldn’t have been more impressed after Lions outing,

Team almost picks itself with very few real final decisions IMO. Probably Milera over Nank, Crouch plays and so does Draper with sub most likely seeing him explode in the second half.

Is it though?

Nicks isn't smart. His selections are terrible. He doesn't think 2 games ahead let alone think long term development of a player. He picks his best side every week regardless of opposition and future thought.

If he selects Draper round 1 it won't be because he is into developing young talent. It's because he thinks Draper is best 23.

Just win the game.

This is one that teams who want to make finals just don't lose. An underdone opponent at home, a full strength line-up (in theory) and coming off the best off season the club has had in a long time.

Its a non-negotiable

I'd argue a team that wants to make finals doesn't lose any of our first 3.

Can the usual suspects just pump the brakes ln the "Nicks doesn't play new draftees early" drama.

Rd 1 2020 - Pick 6 Fisher McAsey debuts at home.
Rd 1 2021 - Pick 28 Sam Berry, Pick 38 James Rowe debut at home.
Rd 1 2022 - Pick 5 Josh Rachele, Pick 36 Jake Soligo debut at home.
Rd 1 2023 - Pick 17 Mad Max debuts away.
Rd 1 2024 - Pick 8 - 197cm Daniel Curtin doesn't debut.

6 round 1 debutants in 5 opening games is a pretty good track record.
Curtin was also coming off an injury, which Draper is not. Plus Draper impressed in a pre-season trial with a highly influential performance, which Curtin didn't.

Personally I'm not overly worried whether Draper debuts round 1 or 2 or whatever, but there's nothing in Nicks' record to make people think he's disinclined to pick a round 1 debutant.

Yes but debuting every new draftee each year isn’t linear.
We were a shit show of a side back then.

So why were you busy spruiking his commitment to picking draftees?

Surely that's just been a coincidence then that our best 22 happened to contain our most recent first rounder

Is there a case to argue this is the Crows biggest game since the 2017 GF?
I think it is, they must win this game.

Because he isn't adverse to picking draftees as proven by picking draftees. The notion that Nicks doesn't give the youth a go is bullshit.

Now he has made some stuff ups (Dowling / Nank / Curtin) but thats just because Nicks is a buffoon.

Having watched the GWS Collingwood game, speed looks like a big commodity.

Ignore St Kilda's form against Port, GWS proved it means nothing.

Hopefully this is the game where we realise that Crouch and Laird aren't going to cut it for much longer after seeing how slow and ineffective 45M blind kicks to nobody and backward handballs to guys under pressure are.

We should have enough to win with St Kilda's injuries (and they play awful, awful football here).

Draper HAS to play, Curtin should be the sub for his versatility. I'd like to see Pedlar play well but know we have...Murphy ready to go.

We simply have to start the season 3-0 against teams that we should be beating.

Neither Pedlar nor Murphy will be, or should be.... near the match day squad.

It's not that Nicks doesn't pick youth.
It's the notion when he has to make a decision between youth or an out of form senior player, he is seen as rarely going with the potential of a in form deserving young guy

Surely to goodness we aren't picking Milera yet?

I'm a fan but he hasn't even made it to the start line for our trial games.

Can we please see him roll through a few matches first? There's likely to be a fair bit of rust there not to mention question marks over his body holding up.

Full squad available, absolutely no need to gamble.

Based on pre season and trial match squads it's Milera in the AFL and Nankervis in the SANFL

This won't change unless there's an injury because Nicks doesn't pick the side based on pre season match form or previous season form
