Xerri did not win one effective tap against Freijah as far as I could see.

It's got nothing to do with size & ability and all to do with positioning. The positioning that English uses is diabolical. The best rucks in the league would struggle to win hit outs with the starting position he chooses each boundary or around the ground ball up.
Question is, why hasn’t Lade ironed this out? He was a ruckman himself… you’d think he’d know abit about ruck craft.

I think he said Smith made it difficult because he only wanted to go to one club.
Buckley said last year the player consent rule should be changed. Contract is with the AFL, not a club. It’s unfair to the lower clubs who have to pay through the nose and still
miss out. I think if you’re not eligible for free agency, then you go to whichever club can meet your financial demands. Maybe an adjustment that it’s within the state you want to go to. If the AFL is not strong enough to properly police the salary cap, then they need to keep adjusting the rules to ensure a balanced competition.

Have you been watching Smith's development over last season and this pre season??

I haven't been able to get access to Footscray VFL games, so I have to go off this forum evaluations and basic statistics.
An average of 26 hitouts in the VFL is a great stat.
However Lachie only averages 10 disposals, and only 1.5 marks a game, not great for someone whos 202cm.
Low disposals/marks potentially shows Lachie is not getting around the ground and getting enough of the pill.

What's Lachie work rate look like in person?
Does he get himself in position to impose himself upon the game?

With additional fitness from time in the system his mobility is improving a hell of a lot. Shame the VFL did not start properly on the weekend so he can put his hand up, but if Tim keeps delivering what he has in 4 of his last 5 games we lose nothing by giving Smith a run

Timmy has had other coaches too during his time in the AFL.
It's like he sets up less for the ruck contest and more for the next phase of play. Instruction?

I agree with you on Timmy, he just doesn't have enough dog in him to be effective in the ruck, but he impacts the game around the game. 15 disposals and 5 marks a game at AFL level.
The bigger stat at the moment, he can run out a game, meaning lower interchange numbers, so important in today's modern running game.
It's why Crossley didn't get a crack, you don't want want your ruck using up crucial interchange numbers.

That's the only thing I can think of.

Remember that even despite losing a heap of hitouts, we often comfortably win the clearances. Obviously the end result is much more important than the initial ruck contest.

It's never been an issue but with a weakened midfield, we got destroyed in the middle so it might not be an effective long term strategy.

Hit Outs as a stat are a totally useless number. It's a stat for the sake of it.

Hit Outs to advantage are the number to pay attention to.

While the two rucks are locked together we should try getting a third player (maybe a tall mid like bont) to jump up and tap the ball to our advantage

It would never catch on and it certainly wouldn't be banned as a tactic after we win a flag with it.

Absolutely!

There was a marking contest late in the game where West was contesting against Xerri. A mismatch on paper, but West made position and held it, and Xerri didn't mark it, as he was out-bodied and out of position. Westy is hard to move in a contest, but he's 182cm vs Xerri's 201.

Maybe Rhylee could give Tim some tips about positioning!

The contest was actually so good. He stopped Xerri and then when the ball went to Simpkin he held that up for a stoppage. He's got grit.
