Autopsy Round 4, 2025 - Saints upset Port in Adelaide!

It looks to be the most even and open race ever and the last 2 have been tight. Small margins, close wins and injuries future and scheduling will decide some fates.

We have put our name right up there in the peloton and are as good a bet as any of them. Adelaide, Hawks, Brisbane, GWS and maybe Pies are the ones that look most likely for top 4 but a few small slips ups and they are right back with the chasing pack. Sydney, Saints, Dogs, Suns, Cats etc all breathing down their necks. Eve Carlton will probably have a run at some point and take a few down on the way through. Banking wins now is a very handy break.
Hawks, GWS and Brisbane are a clear top 3 for me.

GC, Saints, Freo, Adelaide, Collingwood, Sydney, Dogs, Geelong are the pack and weve beaten one of them now.

Carlton is inbetween here. Too much talent to totally rite off but look all at see right now (Dees probably similar but look even worse)

Tigers, Eagles, Dees, North, Essendon look off the pace probably Port too tbh. Im probably forgetting someone.

He hasn't even had a full preseason with the defensive group yet. He has a lot to work on but he's also doing a lot right. We'd be crazy not to persist with him down there
He's never leaving the backline now after what he's shown. I'll add, it's so easy to forget he's only 4 months older that Keeler, who we are all begging to be patient with.

I felt that was Collards breakout game, he feels a lot more comfortable at this level.

Our young players are playing very very well, and hell we still have King, Henry, Pou, Steele to come in.

Keeps playing a little bit better each game and looked like he felt more confident yesterday. Already has 5 goals in 3 games this year. If he could kick 30+ goals in his first full season he'd be right up there with some of the good small forwards. Ginnivan kicked 40.19 in his first full season after getting a few games the year before.

That smother, that was him right? I have barely heard anyone mention it, not even the commentators who refused to acknowledge us. Was it a smother even? That was almost game saving... did I imagine it? Dr Spaceman do your thing and make a gif! If it actually happened... am I seeing things?

Trav had about a dozen or more of his teammates get around him.

The big smother was Hastie. Although Byrnes may have had another one

Wilson did the big smother on Rioli. Then followed it up with a tumble punt that went just outside 50 and led to the Georgiadis goal

Seems about right. I think Essendon are in the pack with Carlton and Dees and North could both cause some trouble to sides that don't come to play. Even the Eagles and Tigers aren't walk up smashings for sides this season. The Dees look psychologically damaged. Something very toxic is going on at the moment. Maybe they can fix it.

Carlton and Melbourne have the talent to beat some good sides if they get their shit together.

I dont think the Eagles, Tigers and North do just yet. Not "easy" beats (no one really is) but if we lose to any of them weve likely had a bad day.

I've been saying for a while now that Buckley is one of the best commentators around. I couldn't stand him as player and not much as a coach but he's moderated his views and is now interesting to listen to. That's one of the best impartial assessments of the Saints I've heard.

Compare that to Cornes who's still saying we are no good.

Bucks gets giddy talking about Ross Lyon. Like some stoner musician that loves an obscure prog rock three pice from the 70s he gushes over his tactics.

Cornes saying we wont win 10.

We have Dogs, Freo here, Carlton, west coast, Melbourne all before the bye. Plus the Suns at Marvel.

We could have 8 or 9 wins by round 12.
Haven't we won at least 10 in the last couple of years?

Take out the covid year (where we won 10 anyway just from 17) 2019 was the last time we went under.

Hes an idiot. were 3/4 now and have 5/6 winaable games BEFORE the bye.

Its weird

Imagine how much we would’ve buried this lot if we had Bergman instead of Byrnes…

Probably more instead of Webster. Still not sure he's the missing piece especially if we need to trade for him.

Ross on Wilson -

“We think he will end up inside”

“Enright thinks he might be the best runner he has seen come into the league”

“Similar to Lappen and those Brisbane boys when I was there in the 90s playing wing before they moved inside”

Watching some of our highlights some of our run and overlap handball game was excellent.

Also, it's not pc but when was the last time all our players have flown the flag like that? Good to see them getting a hard edge imo

We should loosens Windys tag a bit and let him be more proactive. He looks so focussed on his oppo player that he becomes too reactive. I think he'd be better off being a bit less defensive

Agree but some players seem to over look the physical strength side of the equation. I bet Marshall wished he was bigger and stronger after getting monstered by Sweet yesterday and Nankervis the week prior. It wasnt that long ago Jordan Sweet was physically beaten by Marshall, but he has done the work and now is a much better player.

Sweet has put on obvious strength but he didnt have any problem running the game out against Marshall. Tilthorpe is another who had a huge off season and can now physically bully his opponents ala Gehrig when he was playing.
Thilthorpe did a knee in the pre-season and obviously spent the months out in the gym

There is so much more to strength than a 6-pack and biceps

Ross on Travaglia

“We have been working out where he plays. We had him wing and u18s he was half back. We find he is instinctive and aggressive and He hunts the ball. The wide stuff where he holds the line challenges him. We think he will play onball and half back”

Early days but I think we absolutely nailed the Trav pick

Huge if the viking kid can be banked too

That adds to a lot of hits with the previous couple of drafts

It's an embarrassment of riches these days. We couldn't find a sock in a sock draw for 15 years and now we nail the picks in the 50s. Paying for pro recruiters is a incredible investment in your future. Toce and Dalrymple should get statues built if they have nailed this rebuild.

Ross on Collard -

“We have been really keen to get him in, but we haven’t wanted to gift him games.”

“I would love to see him in 4 years”

“Hill has been saying look at those GPS numbers. They look like mine”
His high speed stuff would be right up there. Hes defs a burst player but right now he has a real Kozi Pickett vibe. Would be terrifying for backlines when we have the ball and even scarier when they do.

I think the tighter the windy tag the better. He hasn’t yet shown the ball winning ability without the tag.

Absolutely no shame being a tagger first and ball winner second. Cameron Ling made a very good career like that.

The Port side focussed on trying to rough him up and I think that let us get on top early. He looked a bit rattled but they were so focussed on not letting him hold them back that they forgot to watch the ball. It won't get him any votes but he was a contributor.
