I think this is one of our rather frequent over-corrections.

Seems our group (Players? Coaches? Both?) struggle with the idea of balance and tempo. We seem to yoyo between being a high-scoring team who inevitably leak runs of 5-6 goals because we overcommit in attack, and being a strong defensive side who can stifle other teams but struggle to be effective going forward.

Here's a preseason interview with Voss, and some relevant excerpts:

Might warrant further discussion, or analysis, particularly from some of the preseason track watchers.

Have we changed the gameplan in pursuit of a stronger defensive game, and in doing so made it harder to score? Or do we simply have a playing group that can't adapt - they can go in with an attacking mindset, kick goals but concede them too, or they can go in with a defensive mindset, lock down the opposition ball movement but struggle to get any forward momentum, but they can't pivot between those two methods within a game based on the circumstances?
Or there might be another option. Rightly or wrongly we have invested heavily in our "two headed monster" forward line based around Harry and Charlie.

So far they haven't played together this season and between them have kicked 6 goals in 4 games. From memory they average about 5 goals between them when they play together so you could argue that we are about 14 goals worse off than average on their output.

WOW

Has it gone through to the keeper that Carlton is no. 17 for moving the ball and no. 1 for stopping it.

Surely a monumental red flag that the coaches and player’s energies are being expended on negating rather than moving the ball. Trying not to lose rather than trying to win is a ridiculous methodology.

I just pray that this last week has been about moving the pill, rather than “fixing” our ability to defend in those second halves.

Yep, too many players in the contest and no outlets when we win the ball, hence the stupid ****ing dump kick. Transition out of defense has been a shit show in all 4 games.

Tbh this can have a roll on affect in terms of decision making and inflates poor skills because there are no easy options (which can lead to panic disposal as your space dries up rapidly).

Totally unbalanced on the win the ball/move the ball front.

They were replaced by others though. Kemp has kicked 7, Young 2, JSOS was swung forward and kicked 2. I think we've covered the absence pretty well, all things considered. We're just not really generating enough looks outside of the talls we pick.

Our mids and smalls aren't carrying their weight when it comes to goal kicking

most other teams smalls are much better and in some teams they are deadly - give them a sniff and they will make you pay every time

our smalls on the other hand 🤦‍♂️

I recall in a recent game where we had 3 chances in quick succession to score from various players well inside the f50 - and each of them missed

We have the worst small forward group in the league. So much weight put on the talls.

I think a good small forward line and not having the talls missing so much, we would have had around 3 wins nocked up. It's a massive difference maker. I don't rate any of our small forwards. I think a big part of Hawthorn's rise is just how well they have selected small forwards. Fast, strong bodies who read the game because they are natural forwards, strong in the contests and make space well with the skills to top it off. Our's are small bodied, slow, reactive and don't read the game well.

Too much Larusso not enough Lawrence personally I’d like us to go full Kreese

Say Charlie and Harry are paid $1,000,000 each, those 5 goals have cost us $400,000. each. (that figure should reduce as the season progresses)
At least H runs, leads, tackles and rucks, while Charlie tries to wrestle with some oppo gorilla.

Are we better off spreading the forward line talent around more evenly?

Poor skills perhaps the leading point, and missing the give-off/HB when it’s there.

TDK, despite his good start to the season was also not making much of his dominance or his forward entries being pretty much useless in ending up with a score (usually rebounding back over his head).
