I'm not convinced on that.
We’ll only know in hindsight I guess and I should have added that is purely my opinion there is nothing factual about it, but from what I’ve seen to start 2025 Geelong, GWS and Brisbane are as legit as St Kilda, Geelong and Hawthorn of that era. There’s a strong chance one of the leading four franks themselves as the best since the Richmond era by end of 2025.

Hawthorn aren’t ready, IMO, they’re wonderfully well coached, but aren’t quite there when it come to dealing with the pressure of being hunted for 6 months of a season.

On the game. Yeah JDG back is nice, but Long v Sydney>>>2024-25 JDG so unless we’re shuffling around the likes of Pendles or Steele to make room in the middle I’d expect he plays predominantly forward. He hasn’t been much better than an ok forward since 2019 and both WHE and Sullivan offered a bit v Sydney so in terms of output I don’t think we improve a whole lot with his inclusion. The biggest benefit will be the focus he takes off others.

So, your “big call” is on Jordy now?

He’s barely played as a forward and when he did last season in a few games before injury stopped him he was fantastic as a forward. Check the coaches votes for those games.

He’s just building into the season having had a late start and a set back.

I'm not sold on the Cats. Last year, like the Hawks, I think they slipped under guards with a different game style.

I’m actually more relieved that Perryman seems okay to play than I am about De Goey’s inclusion.
I get it. I think I’m getting somewhat used to JDG unavailable.

I really wasn’t expecting him to be available this week. I hope he truly is fit.

Perryman been amazing for us so I didn’t expect Jordy and the was hoping we weren’t about to lose Pez as well.

I’m not sure what you mean by big call? I was more trying to pump up the work of the inclusions v Sydney. The squad mentality that Sr has spoken of about players not being dropped had me thinking more on the roles that guys coming in are playing…

If he’s playing predominantly forward (I assume we’re all expecting that) and as you suggested he’s clearly working into the season he probably has 15 and 1 which isn’t a big upgrade given what WHE did ball in hand and Sullivan off ball. If he’s playing predominantly forward and goes bigger than that to have say Danger the last two matches output then we win.

Prior to posting that I looked over his numbers since 2019 and the number of goals he’s kicked through the midfield was staggering. I’m counting down until he’s back to his mid forward best because he’s currently a long way off that and when he’s got it we’re completely different.

Degoey will command attention wherever he plays, If he plays forward it's just another player that can get off the chain to impact the scoreboard.. I'm not sure how defensively minded Jordy is tho so the other smalls may need to increase their work rate on his behalf, but he will reward them with opportunities when given the chance

Would love to see Jordy play mostly forward in the Shoota role.
Jordy doesn't apply the same pressure as Shoota, but he has X-factor in spades.
The consensus view is that he'll play mostly forward, but it would be good for him to spend a bit of time in the midfield.
I think we can beat Brisbane again, because our defence is working well, as is our midfield.
Hopefully, we'll see more of the same from Ned, as his output really helped Nick last week.

With De Goey being back, the midfield match up is must-view footy imo, even if you're not a pies or lions fans.

Daicos. Neale, De Goey, Dunkley, Pendlebury, MccLuggage, Sidebottom, both Ashcrofts, Crisp (plus big improvers from both sides like Jasper Fletcher and Ned Long) - it's going to be a pretty star studded battle, and that's before you even look to the names at either end. I don't see either team deploying a full on tagger, so will be a great contest to see which midfield can get on top.

Big night for IQ this one - Charlie Cameron has long been the thorn in our side against them (especially now his mate Joey Daniher has wondered off). Q and Charlie have had some great battles, but I would say Cameron has the advantage right now - real chance for IQ to shut him out and get one back on him. Their key tall forwards don't overly concern me, Frampton's form has been terrific and don't see either Hipwood or Day causing him too much issue - while Logan Morris athleticism should be countered pretty comfortably by any combo of Howe, Moore or Maynard.

Harris Andrews as ever presents a potential issue - however this time around, he's going to have his hands full with a fully fit triple M forward line to combat - while their small defenders could be in for a long night with Jamie and Bobby zipping around and Beau pleasingly finding some touch last week (would love to see him be really physical and defensive on Zorko).

Despite this, I get the feeling this will be another classic pies thriller - as always you flip a coin in these heart stoppers, but I'll give a nod to the pies by 3 to kick off the easter weekend!
IQ has done reasonably well on Cameron on most occasions. Last year Charlie kicked one goal in each of the two games. In the Grand Final Charlie kicked 3 goals from only 4 kicks for the day. IQ is a good match and we go a long way towards winning if he can take the points

Funny thing is I think this version is better than 2023 and is the best version of Collingwood since 2010 (Friday night felt peak MM era). The problem is this is the best set of contenders since that 09-12 era…
Our 2023 side would have won the last 2 matches by under a goal.

It’s early days but this 2025 side seems a lot better at winning comfortably.
