Our 2023 side would have won the last 2 matches by under a goal.

It’s early days but this 2025 side seems a lot better at winning comfortably.
Not only that, but both should have been significantly bigger wins along with the Dogs game whereas a bunch of those close 2023 wins felt like we were stealing it.

It feels different mostly with how we attack and defend. Under Fly to me it’s always felt like we’ve given the opposition a look in order to score, but this year we’ve significantly tightened up on defence whilst retaining our ability to score.

The Sydney game was a perfect example. That 1st quarter was fast and loose like us 2022-24, but the rest of the match felt different. Personnel wise the MMM’s seem to be having a big impact.

I think the MMMs have really taken the pressure of Checkers, we no longer have to rely solely on him to kick goals and if he misses games it’s not a nightmare scenario.

Jordy doesn't apply the same pressure as Shoota, but he has X-factor in spades.
The consensus view is that he'll play mostly forward, but it would be good for him to spend a bit of time in the midfield.
I think we can beat Brisbane again, because our defence is working well, as is our midfield.
Hopefully, we'll see more of the same from Ned, as his output really helped Nick last week.
I've never seen the Lion's board so cocky although it is a relatively small sample size. They believe they are the best team in it and we are not in the list of likely contenders. They are usually more like the Geelong board who are quite analytical and less emotional than most.

On the news they said he went home for family reasons. Didn’t seem serious. Will fly up later and play.
Thats good.

We got this impression that basically the whole squad was going up to QLD, but those playing vfl seem to be still in melb plus the injured. So guess they meant the playing squad only went to QLD from SA. The rest would fly out closer to the vfl game.

There's no way that Cox is coming in just to play on McInerney.

Cameron is getting close to being the premier ruckman in the league at the moment. We'll be backing him in.
Watching the Cox fans coming up with tenuous reasons each week on why he should be included is becoming pretty entertaining tbh.

To be fair, they're the reigning premiers who have started the year 5-0. I think most teams supporters would be the same. That last sentence is definitely not my experience with Cats supporters.

I feel like I can't even remember what JDG's best footy looks like and I'm not expecting to see it this Thursday night by any means. But hopefully he can build into it and get through unscathed and work his way into good form.

As for Pez... bloody hell, I hope X Maguire has learnt from this. Don't go blabbing in the media because you saw someone hobble, ice, whatever. Ask someone at the club, or even the player themselves! Such a random dart to throw at the board.

I'm not convinced on that.
We may find out more on Thursday night.

At the moment Brisbane and GWS seem up there, and who knows how good the Suns will be as the season progresses. Hopefully there are many more last Sunday night for the Piss Poo - though I expect them to be right up there. Also Geelong. Also, a lot of other good sides.

Have to agree, it is an unknown just how good these teams will be and whether a clear front runner will emerge. This time last year, Swans looked almost unbeatable.

With De Goey being back, the midfield match up is must-view footy imo, even if you're not a pies or lions fans.

Daicos. Neale, De Goey, Dunkley, Pendlebury, MccLuggage, Sidebottom, both Ashcrofts, Crisp (plus big improvers from both sides like Jasper Fletcher and Ned Long) - it's going to be a pretty star studded battle, and that's before you even look to the names at either end. I don't see either team deploying a full on tagger, so will be a great contest to see which midfield can get on top.

Big night for IQ this one - Charlie Cameron has long been the thorn in our side against them (especially now his mate Joey Daniher has wondered off). Q and Charlie have had some great battles, but I would say Cameron has the advantage right now - real chance for IQ to shut him out and get one back on him. Their key tall forwards don't overly concern me, Frampton's form has been terrific and don't see either Hipwood or Day causing him too much issue - while Logan Morris athleticism should be countered pretty comfortably by any combo of Howe, Moore or Maynard.

Harris Andrews as ever presents a potential issue - however this time around, he's going to have his hands full with a fully fit triple M forward line to combat - while their small defenders could be in for a long night with Jamie and Bobby zipping around and Beau pleasingly finding some touch last week (would love to see him be really physical and defensive on Zorko).

Despite this, I get the feeling this will be another classic pies thriller - as always you flip a coin in these heart stoppers, but I'll give a nod to the pies by 3 to kick off the easter weekend!
Great read.

It’s nice to have those 3 tall headaches up forward, it’s unpredictable and something different to throw at Brisbane compared to previous matches where it has been only a Mihocek, McStay or Cox surrounded by smalls.

We’ve had the better of Andrews in the last few times we have played, and I think it will happen again on Thursday. Triple M to shut him down and allow our smalls to dominate.

Bobby for a bag of goals. Loves the Gabba.

Pies by 16.

I'm not sure why I thought JDG was to miss this week but I am surprised that he's been marked as available for this week against the Lions. Happy to see him play, if actually selected. I think we have the goods to get the job done this week.

Although I do subscribe to the old addage of 'one week at a time' I can't help but look forward to ANZAC Day.

I'm expecting a few changes against the Bombers though. I suspect that, given the Bombers' current form and the injuries they have, we can manage a few of our lads. I expect Cox will come back in for that game. Membrey will certainly be given a crack at his first ANZAC Day, as will Houston.
I do agree, but ANZAC Day is more than the game itself. The occasion is so special. Players won’t want to miss and Essendon always turn up like it’s a final. We would want to put our best on the park as it’s a game we absolutely need to win.

It doesn't matter where the sides are on the ladder. All that gets thrown out the window on anzac day.

Come in peace

It's completely true we begged for this game when we were crap cause we needed it and the sheer size of the magpie army meant a close to full house

But we had 9 sellouts last year (yeah i know small ground!) so i think we just like the fact it will always be a prime time match. Probably not that bad for the pies to always have a good game for their queensland fans? Also 5 days break for us vs 6 day for you makes it not to bad!

Thought the pies were excellent v swans. Such a good system. JDG a big in. Daniher and Cameron have been so good against Collingwood, and one is out while the other is in fairly dire form, including no goals last week and missed a couple of sitters. Bailey has stepped up but i think we need Lohman back for some more forward line threat

Suspect Berry goes to Daicos - he did pretty well in the mcg game until he got concussed - then Daicos killed us and kicked GOTY. But Daicos also worked off the second best tagger in the game last week so will be a big job ahead for Berry. He has tended to play wing then only tag someone after the centre bounch so that would be the approach at a guess.

Should be a good game - no way can i see us mowing down a margin given it was 34 degrees for our game v dogs. I think it's a 50/50 game, odds seem way out of whack.
So excited for this game. Two of three best teams in it at the moment IMO and stars on every line. Great viewing for neutral fans.

It’s an absolute must win for us but won’t be devastating if it doesn’t go our way. Always hard going up to the Gabba. May the best team win.

Wonderful to see JDG available.

I have full confidence in JaredW and the high performance team. We have been clear about our standards this year: not to play anyone until they are ready to perform.

So, in my view, if JW announces that JDG is available, then he is available in every sense of this word.

My changes for Brisbane will be:

IN: JDG
OUT: Ed Allan

Sub: Lachie Sullivan

(No Cox, sadly. But make no mistake, I am biding my time to select him).

Funny thing is I think this version is better than 2023 and is the best version of Collingwood since 2010 (Friday night felt peak MM era). The problem is this is the best set of contenders since that 09-12 era…
I’m quietly confident about how we look compared to the other contenders.

It’s a long year. The fraudulent teams will crumble, the contenders will rise. We’re humming along nicely at almost full strength and I think with a fully healthy squad we have so many weapons to throw at the opposition. Our older guys have gone up a level to last year. I think we will prove a lot of the critics wrong.

Experience will come out on top in September.

I'm not sold on the Cats. Last year, like the Hawks, I think they slipped under guards with a different game style.
I have Cats with Crows at the moment. I don't think any of their lines are top class anymore. Overall team defence is usually strong though.

Swans and Power not to be written off as top 4 chances, and possible but unlikely contenders.

Correct me if I’m wrong but I swear Fly mentioned about not wanting to just hold on against teams, and that this 2025 team is “different” especially with how many weapons we now have.

The Sydney game late last year hurt us bad and Fly would have gone to work on how we can manage opposition momentum and hold onto these few goal leads. Still very early in the season but whatever they did in the pre-season is working so well ATM.
