That was five years ago, so a change in form isn't a surprise, but to drop off this quickly at 29 would be devastating for us. You'd hope he'd still have the pop and power away from contest.

He was never the fastest but he could move smoothly, not unlike Dawson, Cripps etc.

Cripps looked gone 3 years ago and came back to win the Brownlow. Would love him to stick it up us all.
He’s not been the same since he shredded his weight and became a running man …he’s lacked that bull type effort around the ball sadly

This week l want to see Moose, Hastie and Boxman but truth is that doesn't make us better.
Not now for sure. But we’re not winning it this year or even next.
So play for the future. Short term pain hopefully …

If you don’t like that - don’t read it and move on but dont be telling people what views they can have and that they “must obey and get behind club at all times”
WTF?
Oh, the irony 🤣

I disagree. Of course it would not have meant we would have won but it's a general sentiment through the start of the season. The Punter has been going on about it the last few weeks and I agree wholeheartedly.

We are too short but with the injuries we have, it has severely depleted our tall options. So this is not a crack at selection. It's bemoaning our bad luck with injuries

The Dogs defensive talls didn't have a huge impact on the game stats wise. You're right. That's because we had 11 inside 50's in the first half lol. But the problem was that when our ball movement was shut down, we went long down the line to the contest and we simply couldn't halve it. Sharman halved so many contests against the Power. But he struggled last night. Not a criticism. A fact. He wasn't alone. All the forwards struggled. But no surprise as we are undersized.

Also, we are struggling with the amount of talls and quality in the backline. Aaron Naughton looks like prime Wayne Carey every time we play the Dogs. Caminiti is still learning. So no criticism in his direction but there is no guarantee he makes it.

In regards to your point about Dougal, agree that he would struggle against Naughton pushing up the ground, but how many shots did Naughton have within 20m last night? 4 or 5 maybe?

Imagine if Darcy didn't go down? Although to be fair to Hammer, he was matching up pretty well until the injury.

I've been pretty disappointed and not really a fan of Max Heath's inconsistency. But I hope he gets a debut this week. I think he can make a better contest than what Keeler did. Can chop Rowan out. Allows Owens to stay in the forward line where his contest work for an undersized forward is impressive.

I can guarantee you that our best team this season and going forwards would have at least two or more genuine talls in it. It would be nice if we can start getting them fit or developed enough to play.

Our best talls definitely make the side stronger but the talls made little difference to us winning or losing this week.

All 3 really bad losses this year (I'm including the Port practice game and not GWS) have had the same hallmark. Our zone being destroyed. I said after the port game that Windy was down back and looked like he was guarding a piece of grass and not paying any attention to what the opposition players were doing.

My question if I could ask the coaches is, What is plan B when we are being destroyed? I've not seen that ability to change gears. Last night was the same again. Knife through butter. Why not go one on one for a bit when the zone is being smashed?

Fair question
The other aspect is when / how they stop us moving the ball
The dogs turned us to stagnant , forced us to kick long down line with no talls that was suicide
Sadly we made Naughton look like a star !

Tanking is a scourge.
It doesn’t “age”.
It always was, and always will be.

Looks like plenty of guns went after our picks anyway. It wasn't ladder position that cost us mids. It was drafting Boxshall might end up another Chad Warner anyway.

Garcia looks well ahead of schedule and an incredible get at that pick. Has played 6 career games.

I've had trouble getting on this site for the last 4 or 5 days, been so starved for footy convo iI did what I thought I'd never do again and return to Saintsational.

euuugh

If you think there's been feeble minded melts here, try a whole forum full of worse, without much in the way of reasonable counterbalance. God it's disgusting. I need to sort my browser out, need BigFooty Saints board in my life.

BTW Tanking creates cultures like Melbourne and Carlton and to a lesser extent North. It's for flippin' losers.

Let’s hope Boxhaul does he hasn’t played yet
Langford has and looks ready
Point is we probably could’ve grabbed both
Anyway here we are and there is still hope for Trav and Tauru

Why was beating Carlton last year incredibly stupid ?

Stupid comment imo. Not like the teams who finished below us have done anything

To me, given what was at stake, it was stupid.

I respect people's opposing views on the subject though. There's valid arguments to made for both points of view.

We've been bitch slapped in the midfield for years. Draft full of quality mids. We had the opportunity for a wider range of choice and access. It would have been good business sense to take advantage of that opportunity.

I also think North missing Harley Reid was stupid.

Agreed
All well and good to have a moral stance on the issue but watching our putrid midfield for a decade you get to a point where you make a call based on what’s needed for future success
Having an earlier pick doesn’t guarantee that but it does get you into the quality tier of top end players
We’ve been crying out for A grade mid quality for years …..haven’t had it since Harvs dal Joey Hayes days …..those were days when our midfield was feared
Now we can’t even buy that type quality in…

Tom Gross went at 47 and is smashing it in the midfield for the Eagles. There was plenty there if we wanted them. I think we are building a very specific list profile. Lots of run and dash. I loved Langford and Murphy Reid but both were slow.

I think I took that midfield for granted, I remember thinking that 30+ possession mids must grow on trees and be easy to obtain.....I was so very wrong.

I hear ya…we were spoilt for a while …
Watching Bont live last night I kept thinking…..we’d kill for a generational midfielder like that at Saints now….and sure we might pluck one at pick 46 …let’s hope … but the drafting of top end talent has gotten better over time and there’s a reason top 5 mids go early it’s usually (not always….Billings says hi) a reasonable bet you get something of quality …at least you get the choice ! anyway can’t see us getting near that choice again soon with Tassie coming and all ngas and f/s etc Dalrymple gonna earn his cash ..

Plan B doesnt matter if you're being beaten at the fundamentals.

Selection was an issue in my mind (Henry wasnt ready evidently, we are too short up forward and Marshall's foot should have made him be rested, Steele may not be fit in the knee.. etc..) and the dogs knew how to presssure us out of the game plan but those things account for a loss, not what was realisticly a hundred point drubbing.

If the pressure, effort and poise isnt there you just wont even be able to fall back on a man on man gamestyle. It was damn deplorable and the only caveate is there wont be too many players hurting from overwork.
