Will be interesting to see how it plays out in the states now
It’ll be interesting to see how it plays out in the Liberal National Party (the QLD merger of the two). If those MPs all go over to the Nats then the Nats are the opposition party and the liberals are essentially just a minor party

they already have alignments with one or the other so presumably will stay where they are, more or less.

How does it play out in the coming elections though? The coalition is favoured to win the next Victorian election, but what if the Liberal party don't have enough for a majority and the Nats split here too? What if it's a Labor/Greens minority?

Littleproud has guts but it'll be complicated elsewhere, for sure. It could create a messy 3 or 4 way preference battle amongst seats.

Seems like the dispute is over federal issues like nuclear power so I don’t think it’ll follow through to the state level coalitions

They've split while it doesn't matter. If the result of an election is government together or opposition apart there's no way either part doesnt join the coalition.

I’d be intrigued to see the political landscape if they ran separately, whether the ALP would shed voters to the Greens or Teals as I suspect there was a strong ‘vote Labor to ensure Dutton doesn’t get in’ component to the last election.

I thought this was more of just a tradition based on geography from prior to the merger of the two parties. I wonder whether there’s ever been much more thought to it, or if it’s just “I’m from a metro seat so I’ll sit with the Libs”

There are factions like in any other party, typically federal liberals have dibs on running candidates in some seats and federal nationals have dibs on others.

In other states they’re separate parties but they still split up the electorates so one or the other is contesting and they’re not running against each other.

well we recently see an example of some consideration, when Price walked out on the nats to sit with the Libs to try to get a promotion

I think technically she's a member of the Country (campaignerry?) Liberal Party and both the libs and nats have agreed those MPs can pick and choose which partyroom they sit in.

They can still stay aligned at state level. The Victorian Nationals are actually a little bit less right than their National counterparts.

I'm still kinda shocked when I read some people's thoughts on the Israel/Palestinian war.

I don't think any rational person denies that both groups of people have suffered, but it seems that any supporters of Israel immediately conflate criticisms of their war crimes with supporting terrorists.

It's either disingenuous or incredibly stupid, and I don't know what's worse.

The State of Israel’s government and armed forces are committing a genocide, and we should be clear-eyed that that is the case without being accused of being a) a terrorism supporter, b) a Hamas* sympathiser or c) anti-Semitic

*there’s also the whole thing that Hamas came into being with Israeli funding in the 1980s as a way of undermining the PLO/PA, but I digress
