I only had the chance to watch the last twenty minutes.

I think I had accepted after last week that we were at season over. So I am now looking at how the young kids play. They were actually pretty good over that time period. Aaron Lord has been a wonderful pickup.

Hopefully Wilson and Lemmey can continue to put pressure on for a senior call up too,

You can’t be serious.. Man bleeds blue and carried our midfield like Judd did before him. The only Brownlow medallist we have but yeah. Terrible player
I dont doubt his commitment one iota - however a Captain is more than just 'commitment'.

So he should carry our midfield and our coaches boxes. I mean the guy is a unit but that’s a big ask
You don't want one bloke carrying the midfield- the best thing Voss has done with Cripps is play him forward more often.

Carlton is losing a lot of games because the collective team football IQ is very low.

But we are talking about this game. This thread and the gameday thread is all about this game, not this season as a whole.

Yet zero mention of Durds, and dozens of mentions about Motlop, all negative. Not one positive.

I start getting a little sus on crap like that.
I'm not going to sit here and tell you how to interpret what, cos ultimately that's up to you. From my POV, it's because of frustration that's been building for the past 2 months. Same reason George isn't being potted, he was well, well below his best today but because he's been very good to start the year it's easier to look past it.

They showed no gears, no footy nous, no mental resilience or fortitude.

How about they get angry and hold each other to account. Call out the lack of work rate and effort, and stand for something. Simply weak.
I genuinely think Cripps is the only one who knows the level required and genuinely hurts after a loss. Walsh possibly takes it too seriously and just over does it. Weitering seems to go through the motions. I don’t think Harry or Charlie care a great deal about having success. TDK seems to like the focus being on his contract and it’s showing in the way he is playing. Not really surprising we are where we are when our leadership group aren’t very good leaders.

Yup.

For a coach noted for his physicality, he must appalled at our lack of mongrel.

Can not even remember the last time we put an opposition player on his arse.

As for playing angry…..meh.

IMO none of the players would be more gutted after a loss than Voss. He has put his wonderful legacy as a player on the line to be a head coach. He knows if he doesn’t have success it’ll always be a little asterisk against him after he’s done. It must be beyond frustrating for him watching how meekly this group of players succumb week after week after week.

More disposals, more inside 50s, more clearances … Yada yada yada.

Facts are you can’t polish a turd.

Teams love playing Carlton, just give us the ball, watch us bomb it in or make a basic mistake and run hard the other way. Rinse and repeat.

TDK go now please. $1.7 million per season the saints are having a laugh. He should be dominating for that money but I think he’s not interested and today showed it. Gives us nothing.

The coaching is probably not up to it but how would you know with a bunch of players that can’t hit basic targets and execute as often as this.

It’s the biggest chicken or the egg I’ve seen and I’m not sure how we fix this in one or two off seasons.

Big call re Cripps.

Somewhat agree that like Judd, he isnt a team lifter. More of a "f it i'll do it myself".

Good Captain, maybe just not the right type. He inspires players to watch him, not follow him.

What if we kicked goals vs points
Hit targets
Scores at the other end don’t happen
W/L is different then

It’s the execution (players provide) that is the downfall. We don’t have the necessary skills to play at the standard required.

Straightened up our defence and stoppages/contest/effort are there, it’s the forward entries (execution again and IQ/decision making) that’s continually f*ing us over.
Let’s break it down….and look at tge numbers..

We kicked 12.10 which isnt great but doesn’t scream we lost cause we kicked poorly

Our forwards aren’t too bad at set shots.

I’m more concerned with the quality of our f50?entries.

We are more quantity than quality.

All that effort moving tge balL up tge ground to only dump kick it in there

We build and build but fail to finish off our hard work.

I wonder how often we do drills at training and preseason to practice ball movement and f50 entries??

My suspicion is we don’t.

How can this many professional afl players in our team all have poor kicking skills ?? It’s not realistic.

I'm asking why he is the one being singled out when Durdin had a far worse game?
One of them has a better formline and came out of the gates with speed and an appetite for the contest, though it did wane.

Durdin was well-blanketed, while Motlop had plenty of chances to take charge through matchups and moments, and coughed the ball up.

He should have been used on-ball more, but he still has to ask himself what kind of footballer he wants to be given his abilities, and get to work on it because you can see him playing within himself without a clear purpose behind doing so.

Difference is Durds has had games this year where he's showed something, he's a small forward, he's going to throw up a stinker every now and again.

Durds is a downhill skier. Pure and simple. Has good games against lousy teams and doesn't get near it the rest of the time.

Captains make players around them better - he burns players. Captains are on field coaches - he isnt.
Side Eye Wtf GIF

The most disappointing part of today was how easily the giants were able to score. Two soccer goals, and a bunch of simple Joe the Goose to an unmarked player because we were poorly positioned.

We significantly struggle when we get an umpiring decision we don't like - players would rather remonstrate than run - leave that to the fans in the stands.

Really likes O'Farrell for a debut game - could be a very handy player after a couple pre-seasons. I'm not checking out, but I'm realistic with my expectations - finals are basically out of reach, and even if we make it, we will likely have used all of our fuel tickets to get there.

Q2 was 1.5.

The two middle quarters - 4.8.

There's the game, not to mention two dozen deplorable turnovers...

I agree 100%, but what support does Cripps have.. The only other mid we had with some gusto was Kennedy but let’s not go there.

My view is that the biggest problem Carlton have with the list is low footy IQ. Good players knwo how to play within their limitations and how to get the most out of each other and play for each other. I watch Carlton and it becomes obvious that there is far far too much one out going on.

How much of this is a coaching criticism / fault and how much is players I dont know - but there is an overlap.

I agree with others that it is concerning that we have 5 players taking up a huge percentage of our cap, and a 6th wanting to join them, and none of those players are considered to be in the AA side at the half way point of the season. If you are not performing consistently up to your salary, then we have a problem. Cripps and Weitering generally earn their money. The other 4, not so much.

Yes but Harry was a key in two wins this year, and Curnow is a two time Coleman medallist and AA spots etc etc. BUT ... these types should be having high standard games 20 times out of 23 per season, and vote winning games at least 10 times per season. Two forwards with 3 Colemans between them, should be kicking a real bag once a month at least and be consistent in between that. Where are the bags? Where are the games where they are unstoppable?

Comfortable ... way too comfortable. No inclination to fight, to get down and dirty, to be the firestarter. Even when they do, zero football smarts to do the right thing at the right time.

Our cap is a mess because we put all of our eggs in too few baskets.

Time to let go of one or two baskets.

Cripps has earned the right to retire a one club Carlton legend. Curnow is a generational talent that sells memberships. And Weitering is unquestionably one of the best in his position.

Every single other player on the list should be on the table at the end of the year. And I'd be working from highest paid down.

McKay headlines. Fantastic when Curnow was injured. Never been the same since. Significantly overpaid based on output. And two key forwards on big money isn't the right forward mix in modern footy.

TDK is next. His departure will be a blessing, the contract we were offering was ridiculous let alone what St Kilda is likely to sign him for. Gives us a ton of cap to reinvest and very good compensation pick. Leaves a list gap to close, but id rather deal with that problem than have another salary cap killing contract on the books.

I am already scared at where Walsh's contract negotiation could end up. In the last 1.5 years he's been a slightly above average midfielder. He will want superstar money, and I'd be happy to let him get it elsewhere rather than massively overpaying him. Body is cooked. If a favourable deal can't be done by the end of the year I'd shop him now.

If we have any other players on our list on above average money they are stealing from the club and should be on the table too.
