The lure of going home is a discount to the contract that is offered.

We did it last year with Battle, from all reports. In his situation, 'home' was his boyhood club.

This may be one of those unusual situations where the club the player plays for needs to offer more than the bidding club.

The lure of going home is a discount to the contract that is offered.

I think an example of this was when Dangerfield chose to play with Geelong even though the Crows were offering a more lucrative contract.
Can we be so sure that Geelong were offering a less substantial .. cough cough ... ahem .... package ..... than what Adelaide had on the table??

Not sure using Geelong is a good example ..... if you know what I mean

St Kilda is confident Marshall, contracted to 2027, will be happy playing more forward time if TDK arrives but clubs will try to pry him out of Moorabbin.

Aleers preference is to remain at GWS but if he wants more playing time he will move to Moorabbin. Giants have offered 2 year deal.

TDKs first year could be $2m+ with us.

St Kilda hasn’t made formal contact with Bergman despite the continued link

Happy to work on any length of deal with Nas 2/4/6/8/10’years - saints confident he stays. Loves the club.

From the Ralph article I linked above

I’ve seen a lot of arguments about continuing to go the draft and investing in our current list instead of going after existing players like TDK, Aleer & Bergman. Arguments that are supported by the narrative that it’s worked for us so far because the state of our list has improved significantly in the past 4-5 years.
While this is true, we aren’t competing against ourselves. We’re competing against the rest of the competition. Sides that have the capacity to pull more levers. Northern clubs who are brimming with established and developing talent with further access to some of the best young talent in the country and the capacity to trade for anyone they want because they have the assets to do so.
We aren’t playing on a level playing field, so any opportunity we get to improve our list to compete with the rest of the competition we must explore.
TDK is a no brainer. He improves the high end talent on our list for nothing more than cash and we need to spend.
None of us are privy to the structure of the offer, but seriously, who cares.
We’ve done a great job to identify and begin developing some young talent but it’s not us versus ourselves of 4 years ago, it’s us versus the future of the competition. You take risks, you make mistakes and you grow, or you sit still and hope for the best

Aleer, or someone like him is probably someone we need.
He shouldn't cost us a lot of draft stock and we don't have much key defender depth.
We drafted Barrat last draft , but he may not be ready for some time.
Seems we lost patience with our Defenders after persevering too long with Goddard.
We drafted Clavarino in 2017 and delisted him after 2021. He's now playing strongly at state level.

I don't know for a fact and neither do you

The difference is I'm accepting the media at face value (because they're right more often than not) whereas others around here are picking and choosing with their red, white and black glasses on.

We can't assume St Kilda is paying more than the media suggests in some instances because we'd like them to offer more (NWM) and less in others simply because we think it's too much (De Koning)

They might be right 70–80% of the time, but that still leaves a significant margin for error.

In 2022, the AFL confirmed that 12 players earned $1M+, and the media attempted to guess who they were, with conflicting reports from various sources.

No official list was ever released, most of the figures were purely speculative.

It’s good that you acknowledge you're taking the media at face value, but if I were you, I wouldn’t be so confident in the accuracy. They’ve been wrong before when it comes to salaries and contracts, just look at the cases of GAJ, Lobb, Grundy, Buddy, and others.

Everyone also needs to remember that TDK will cost us nothing in draft picks and/or players. That is huge. If he was on the market and not a free agent, Carlton would be asking for two first rounders.

He is hosted to dinner by his two best mates when in Melbourne every night.

Nice of him to inform his mates he's staying in Melbourne over an intimate dinner.
My thoughts are that this is good. You want conviction in your decision.

If your mates are begging you to come you should also be able to voice your concerns against and get honest answers.

Which should lead to backing up your original decision.

Geez, could you imagine the highly articulate and persuasive pitches coming from JHF....

3 mates catching up for dinner is hardly a story.
If Nas’ management & Ports list bosses were there in attendance then it’s a completely different story. The fact they weren’t is a pretty good indicator that this is a beat up

Sam Mitchell's wife gives a wave.

It would be ironic if NWM told Burgoyne and Horne-Francis how great the culture is at St Kilda’s and that they would love living in Bayside Melbourne.

And they both subsequently had their interest piqued to join us.

Isn’t Burgoyne out of contract?
