Can anyone explain how this match was a fully ticketed game, with no tickets available 24hrs before, and people getting turned away at the gate, yet the attendance was only 78k - just over 3/4 full?
Simple. 10-15k people held tickets but didn't turn up for whatever reason. The weather in the morning was looking very wet, cold and windy and may have scared people off.

it was crap both ways so i don't know where the complaints are coming from and even then this was one of those games where its mainly shitty ruck frees that go to Gawn and Cameron and inflate the free kick count

‘Mainly.’

5 out of 49.

Even then it highlights some of the grievances; 4 of those 5 went to the Pies ruckman

Sometimes you have to make those tough calls for the betterment of group cohesion and ultimate success. Why they should have gotten rid of Oliver too.
Actually think Weitering would work well with May. He's a bit of a menace too yelling at teammates. Wouldn't mind bringing him in for a year or two while some of youngsters develop in the 2s.

Why was it fully ticketed with no walk ups? Unlike ANZAC Day, this game has never approached 90k - last year was the biggest ever (84k).

I also find it unlikely that 1 in 4 people who had a ticket just blew it off because amazingly it was cold Melbourne day in June - when the whole occasion is based around it being a cold day!

What is the current prevailing opinion as to the words exchanged between Max and May at the end there? Here's my current best guess.

Steven May: Why didn't you palm it off to me..? Don't you know who I am..???

Max Gawn: Not now Steven...

Steven May: garbled attempt at english

Been a massive issue with the AFL - fully ticketed events that don't get close to selling out just to force certain members to upgrade their tickets to "guarantee" a seat.

Gawn is genuinely a lovely bloke and one of the best captains in the league

Absolutely love him, can kind of see the argument that he might not be the best captain but some of the issues that would lead people to hold that view, I would contend that he can’t have much of a say in that anyway.

Steven May is a loose cannon and a clear d**khead. Moreover, he’s a senior player who hasn’t spent his whole career at Melbourne. He isn’t a young d**khead, he’s an old d**khead. Even if Gawn was the confrontational type, and it seems he’s not, May wouldn’t listen to him telling him to pull his head in. So Gawn is fighting a losing battle there. May isn’t a ‘rascal’ getting pissed and just making a nuisance of himself, he’s violent, and disruptive. That’s hard to control.

Oliver has personal problems. Gawn can’t fix that. He can support Oliver but he can’t fix him. So that’s not on him.

Petracca wasn’t looked after properly by the club. Again that’s not on Gawn.

What Gawn can do is lead by example which he does every week, offer a great example as a man, a player, try and be encouraging to everyone and bring the best out of them as much as he can and it seems he’s tried that as best as a player can.

My impression of Weitering is a solid team man, haven't noticed him handing out idiotic sprays. Is he vocal? Maybe he could belt May into silence as a sort of minder.

For us Howe is very vocal as onfield coach, but it's positive and negative as required.

May is just an arse.

Lots of snow has fallen already this year.
The range rovers couldn't give up that opportunity.

Reserved seat members and mcc that don't show up, along with not selling 5k standing room tickets.

I hope Craig McRae does a Dimma, and complains publicly about the constant off the ball holding of Naicos by Langdon throughout the match.

Trouble is McRae is too easy going in that regard, and not prone to making waves, even when it’s clearly justified.

It wasn't just the free kick count, but where the umps give them. Putting Daicos dead in front. Many of the umpiring decisions were baffling, and 9/10 were favouring Collingwood. I thought the Dees were the better side, and lost by a point - in spite of umpire bias, and inaccuracy. When they break it down midweek, they could take away a lot. They had their chance to well and truly put the game away, didn't do it.
