I'm not so worried about the Nick tags. As long as it's done legally. It's only the pleb clubs who seem to see the need to do it.

The good sides generally back their own system. And they're the ones we'll be meeting in the finals.
He will have a hard tag every game for the rest of the year.

I don't think Lions, Cats etc will completely sacrifice one of their own players in the same the way Dees, Saints etc have, was my main point.
Cats mids are shaky at best, they'd trade any of their mids if it meant neutralizing Daicos. Lions will have learned from the blood bath we gave them, can't let nick run free.

I wouldn't expect them to let Nick run free 🥴 he'll always have an opponent. I just don't think they will completely sacrifice one of their own players to stop Nick. Besides the fact it's not working anyway.

Not sure if I'd call Bailey, Holmes & Atkins as shaky..

Fly's presser

Were you pleased you stood up to the challenge from the Saints, especially after a tight first three quarters?
"Yeah, we were pretty deliberate in our planning and knowing what was coming, a team [that] had a poor performance last week for want of a better term and a team fighting for their life. I thought they were really hard to play against tonight. Particularly in the second quarter, their clearances got going and we lost a lot of territory that way. I just kept saying to the guys 'hang in there, we just need to hang in there and embrace the struggle and the wrestle of this and we'll have our time'. We started to get scoreboard impact late in the game so I thought the Saints were certainly up for the fight tonight".
Were you rusty coming out of the bye?
"No, I don't feel that. I think there's a lot of credit to the opposition. I thought parts of our game we took a little while to get going. You look at all the numbers, it looks like a Collingwood style game, a performance we've put together for the first half of the season. I've got to say our group prepares as good as I've ever seen a group prepare so this week as coaches we came here tonight with great confidence. It's like anything, you go to a Formula 1 and qualify for the pole position, you still got to do the race. We're not kidding ourselves, we still need to come here and compete against a team that tries to take things away from you. We prepared so well as a collective and there's no coincidence you get a result".
What's the extent of Beau McCreery's injury?
"He'll get scans tomorrow. Likelihood there will be some form of a hamstring strain. We're thinking on the minor end. That's the doctors saying 'minor end' and Beau saying the 'minor end. He's done a pretty bad one last year I think he did it or the year before. There's awareness there so we'll have to wait on what that looks like".
The Windhager-Daicos battle lived up to expectations. What was your assessment of it?
"There was always going to be a lot of cameras wasn't there? The spotlight was on it. I just said to Nick when he come off for the first break that we don't want him to fight the battles, we'll fight them for him. He didn't need to get caught up in the wrestle of that; the free kick against that I'm probably talking about. As a group and as a team, we want to look after him. We don't want him sitting there feeling like he's fighting his own battles, so I thought tonight as a collective Nick's had 30 possessions so you'd say that his performance was pretty impactful and then the way we looked after Nick I was more proud of them than what we have in recent time".
How big was Nick Daicos' goal in the last quarter given the pressure came off after that?
"Can you see how much we enjoy when he does things well? He means a lot to us, and it's not just him. You see Tim [Membrey] kick a checkside goal. We have energy for others and this is an exciting part of our group right now. Our spirit is high and so it should be. We've got a lot to be thankful for and our fans turn up tonight, another 40,000 coming here. We've got a home game at Marvel, how cool is that? But they turn up and they support us. We want to put on a good show for them. We want to drive the enthusiasm for our fans so Nick is a good example of that, his goal and Tim's goal you see the celebration of his first goal and then the last one. Our spirits are high".
Is that as well as the team has handled the Nick Daicos' tag with his performance and the way his teammates supported him?
"Right now, yeah. It's not the first time Nick has been tagged and had 30 [disposals]. That's real. I just think we're sort of working through maturity around that and how we do this better ourselves. Nick does an enormous amount of work on the opposition. He's sitting there watching tape asking coaches 'where's he going to go?', 'will he go with me here'?, 'what's he done in recent time'. You set yourself for that and to Nick's credit he gets the reward. Again, I'm repeating myself we're happy with how we supported him. I don't want to make that the whole story of the game though. There's a lot of other parts to the game. That was one part of it".
Darcy Cameron's intercepting ability is widely talked about, but his forward presence was just as equally damaging?
"Yeah, he's had five shots on goal as a ruckman. Marking the ball inside 50 is enormous. He's important to us behind the ball, he's been intercepting the ball. Tonight, he went forward a bit more and challenged the Saints. Part of our game coming in we thought that playing the Saints in recent time and watching them they do get numbers back to make it hard to score. We had to sit in that and second quarter in particular was a hard quarter to get some fluency in our ball movement, but we knew it was coming. I thought the way we handled that tonight was probably the best we've done that. 18 marks inside 50 is a representation of the way we moved the ball forward at times, fast and slow".
Was there a directive in terms of your discipline behind the ball knowing the Saints want to get numbers back and not to get sucked up into that and maintain that defensive structure?
"Yeah, our defence this year has really stacked up. 74 points [conceded] tonight is an ok result for us. They [St Kilda] changed their game. I thought we slowed them down really early. They're the #1 mark and play on team in the comp and they were going at 17% in the first quarter which means we've really slowed them down, so that's credit to our defence and Roughy putting our plan together. Then you could see the game, they started to speed up and they would mark and play on and run a bit more and kick a bit faster to contest. Our layers were really critical to that to answer your question. Darcy Moore intercepting, he started to really intercept balls in the second half more than the first. An important part of the game".
Just on Darcy Moore, it was him, Jamie Elliott and Bobby Hill that were really important players and they were right down in terms of possessions around the middle of the game. How pleasing was it you had some sort of unevenness in some respects around tonight but you still got the job done?
"I've got to be honest here, I look at the possessions after the game. I look at our roles and responsibilities and it's difficult for some positions in our team to get possessions. I appreciate the question because it is real, the guys have ability and we wanted to do it tonight. If you're not having impact, 'stay with us, really stay in tune with our game' because it's a choice to be connected to the game; 'oh, I've dropped a mark' and 'just comeback to us' or 'I haven't had a possession for a quarter'' and 'just stay here we've got you, we'll work with you'. Again, it's an important part of what we're trying to create with our spirit".
Just on that, the cameo of Jamie Elliott at the end of the third quarter was significant in the context of the game?
"Clutch. That was huge. I feel like if you watch the game back and I will do with a red wine and enjoy the commentary. It was definitely a moment. Jamie gets a set shot and tackle and all that within 60 seconds just gave us energy, it gave the crowd energy and put a margin at three quarter time that was critical to the end result. Just clutch, his set shot goal kicking right now is absolutely brilliant".
The role of Patrick Lipinski playing more forward of the ball was big and it felt like you really missed him on King's Birthday?
"We've just shifted his role in the last few weeks from wing to sort of more forward based. He's impacting the scoreboard. It was 2 goals again tonight, 2 goals against the Hawks before getting concussed. He's critically important to us, so again it comes back to do your job and then add your flavour to it. We've got some quality players who can add another layer to it. We're pleased for Paddy that he gets to express himself forward of the ball and impact the scoreboard, really important".
It feels like you talk about him every week, but given his performance today how loud is Charlie West knocking on the door to play in the senior team?
"Did you see the kick after the siren? Charlie West kicked six goals in the VFL and I must admit his magnet was really close this week. I didn't tell him, but it was really close. Now it's going to be really hard to keep him out. I'm rapt for him and a 19-year-old kid playing VFL and kicking the goal after the siren, we'll celebrate that first thing on Monday morning when we get the team together. He looks like he'll be hard to leave out next week".
Billy Frampton has been the stable figure down back when other players around him have been in and out. How important has he been for your team?
"It's funny, when you watch the tape we look at the system. Billy is important 'to play here, when the other guys are supporting him'. We've got team goals that we kick and we've got team goals that we stop. Billy has been a terrific part of it. If anything, Billy has gone away from being 'I just win my one on ones to hey, I'm playing a bit more system here'. If you get a chance, watch that because he's playing better than he's ever played based on playing more for us than just trying to win more one on ones. I thought tonight he had moments he could have maybe influenced the air a bit more than what he did. As the game wore on, his value as a system-based player is as important as ever".

They looked very ordinary against the Lions, but to be fair its a titan clash in that mid battle and everyone is capable of a down day.

fave moment? Nick goal obviously insane but the Jamie double goal or the Membrey banana at the end are my top 3.

Very pleased to hear in Fly's presser that he wanted us to do more to assist Nick with the tag
Thought in past weeks we've been way too gentle with Nick's opponents
There's still a way to go - he needs more chop outs from our other boys

Saints' board is full of hyperbole re Fox Footy comments on Windhager

Enjoy mediocrity
They can at least enjoy the 60th anniversary of their only flag next year

They’ll request a special game against us for that anniversary.
We should tell them to GAGF.

I reckon when we just went up a gear, like we’ve done so many times this year.

Nicks floater goal was a big moment. The way everyone got around him too. You can see he’s been struggling with all the extra attention this year.

Maynard will help with that

Doubt he put up with the Crap the Taggers have been doing for Nick in Recent Games

You need to be keep better mates.

I'll cop that because it's true.

Have known him for too long; I should have ditched the a*hole back in high school.

If it makes you feel better, I married my girlfriend.
Yep....she was one of them. Thankfully, she still thinks Kouta is playing.

I watched the replay - I got the impression our boys flexed when they needed to, and the game was always in hand.
On stats Ned Long was a bit quieter, but he actually did a lot of one percenters, including flattening a St Kilda player that dared to lay a hand on Nick - he's a gem.

Watched the second half replay, and in the last quarter it was either Lyon or Dunstal who said we need to be challenged in order to really get going.

We were once again doing our thing of switching gears and getting on top - but the point being that we hold off on doing it until we really need to. And then we go bang.
