Autopsy Round 23 = Adelaide 59-56 Collingwood

I love Mason Cox. My posting history will attest to that. I think he can still provide something but the evidence is starting to mount against it.

That said, while we probably earn another three or four opportunities that way, what doesn’t get captured is how much pace we lose from our forwardline, making it far easier for Adelaide to repel. Which is the greater value is the question, but Mason plays we don’t enjoy the inside 50 dominance that we had in my view.

Also, they were horrible conditions to carry an even slower forward that rarely clunks them any more.

I’d like him to play against the Dees, should structure permit. Before this week, I thought the opportunity was with McStay behind the ball but after that defensive showing it’s hard to see us employ that now.
You wouldn’t take Beau out for Coxy, you’d take out Mcstay who offered nothing in the air or on the ground and had nothing to do with us getting repeat entries.

At this point we need to try something else, it’s just not working.

Cox also offers way more as backup ruck, they got a huge advantage only having to beat Mcstay in ruck contests in F50 or in the middle as the backup ruck.

Mcstay had 4 hit outs. I like him but he’s not fighting enough. He should be hungry but he’s not. Play Cox now, if Mcstay fails again next week are you going to do the insane thing again in a cutthroat final and just pray things get better? We’ve been doing the same things for weeks but are not deterred by getting the same shitty effort.

Just as a summary of the game. Pies played very good defense and rebounded well, but inefficiently. Adelaide played defense very well also. Finals level defense.
Good practice.

Pies got shafted because Adelaide got bailed out with easy frees for them and Pies missed out on the same frees, it was very unevenly umpired. AFL is a disgrace really. The lack of competition is giving these guys the chance to shape the league through umpire influence.

Thilthorpe was bulldozering McStay EVERY time... like Thilthorpe literally just taps the ball to every spot where an Adelaide player was. Absolute horrible rucking from McStay... no resistance.

Yeah fair counter. I might be overstating the gap between Dan and Mason’s mobility in my head.

Fly said in his presser that he's not sure if Bobby will be back against Melbourne. They are definitely working on helping him get to where he needs to be. Trust they're doing the right thing.

Last season Pies won 10 games and Naicos got 37 Brownlow Votes.

Voting is a farce these days, Umpires automatically give the stars 3 or 2 votes if they tick the 25+ disposals, 4+ clearance, 1+ goal boxes..... its to keep the bookies and AFL marketing department happy. Bookies love big names on their top 5 to get people to gamble.... more popular the players the more casual turn out.
Anything decided by umpires is questionable at best
Look at tonight

Fly in his presser said Bobby didn’t travel to Adelaide and unsure whether he’s available next week.
That’s interesting given it was reported earlier in the week that Bobby wanted to fly over and be with the boys even if he didn’t play. Whatever the off field troubles. Something is certainly up. Respect his privacy and the club to make the right decisions for the team and for him. As well as support Bobby as much as he may need.

Being that style and pressure and we win most games - our game is in decent shape, we should all be feeling pretty bullish.

Most importantly the list is in a healthy spot as well.
I am also not too stressed about losing top 2 or even top 4.

Premierships are won in September. And playing an extra game is not a death sentence for those who missed out on top 4. Just have to execute and have a reliable interchange.

Pies had their injury down time and rest time also, and they over trained the last few weeks so their tank is good for September, where they can ease up a bit on training and focus on tactics so the bodies are less worn.

Yet week in week out they select him to play that role-it drives me insane. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over but expecting a different result.

Really is amateurish
Integrity of a billion dollar competition goes up in smoke because you have referees with agendas

We finally showed up tonight. We've had to sit through many weeks of rather insipid performance. They put some heart into it tonight and looked a lot cleaner in playing chains and overall getting out of sticky situations.

Our main issue heading into finals is most likely going to be forward 50 conversion. Our forwards aren't marking a ****ing thing. Chest marks bouncing out of their arms, the type of stuff you see in junior levels. They'll know this though, and hopefully they get to work on it.

Keane gave Checkers a bath tonight. McStay was also non existent. Membrey went missing for last 3 quarters.

Overall a much better team effort than last week.

Should have capitalised on those inside 50s but so very wasteful in the forward half.

How many marks inside 50 for us? …2? Just not good enough.

Geez those umpires… Just got sucked in too many times against us and stymied our momentum countless times.

However… If we get to play Crows again at the G, we should have their measure.

We had 10, they had 5.

Yes and no with 2011. We couldn't beat the Cats that year, lost 3 times to them (didn't lose to any other team incredibly), we were a genuine 2nd best team. The Cats had our number. I knew it all season, was waiting to lose that GF to them, they wanted 2010 payback and we were never tough enough against them in 2011. In 2010 be beat them on the turnover, in 2011 they brought the game back to the contest and strong armed us 3 times. I'm over it now though...I think!

Are you serious? We lost our first game to them that year by a few points due to a dubious umpiring decision to disallow pendles winner with a few seconds left, and the other game, we lost by 80+ in a dead rubber in the last round.

That year was tarnished due to coaching handover and players being happy with themselves after 2010.

2011 was by far the most dominant Collingwood team I have ever seen and it’s not even close.

This is the ladder with Gold Coast beating Port and Essendon by 6 goals, hawks beating Brisbane by 6 goals and us beating Melbourne by six goals. Not unreasonable. We play Cats at MCG.

If we beat Melbourne there is every chance we stay 4th and go to Adelaide week one of the finals. Tonight would have to give us some confidence.
Unlikely, the Suns still have two more easy kills and I would imagine their % would eclipse ours. But, you never know I guess. We have shot ourselves in the foot unfortunately.

Can't win if you don't score, been the way since Carlton. Didn't kick a goal in a half against gold coast, couldn't kick one more against freo, kicked 3 goals in 3 quarters again Brisbane and tonight had 70+ inside 50s and still lost.

Absolutely bizarre how we've gone completely impotent going forward
Even more bizarre is why coach and match committee haven't changed it up for 7 weeks. Fly talks about not standing still so it would be nice to see a bit more creativity when it's not working.
