Autopsy GWS, Umpires conspire against heaven

I think we struggled early because they were converting really low percentage shots into absolute arse goals. Marshall was physically beaten by Briggs but I don't think Briggs gave them a massive advantage for his size dominance.

A more dominant ruck would make life easier but we set up to minimise clearance damage.

We were falling off tackles too. It was a thing.

The umpiring in the 2nd half was almost comical. I’ll go as far as to say it cost us the game.

They need to go back to 2 umpires. They might need to throw the ball up too. If the pay off is poor adjudicators who can bounce.

Yeah, those early tackle attempts were horrendous. Really rate the fight in this group. Once we would have given up at 4 goals down.

Jones cops a lot of crap in here but actually thought he was ok yesterday, put his body on the line in a number of crunch situations, didn't use it too badly and was on the end of some poor decisions by the frumpires.
Yeah , plenty of the experts on here bag him yet some others always get a free pass , There are a couple of posters on here that think every time something goes wrong its Jones fault , Give him a break

If he is that probably explains his drop in output.

If you’re going to pay someone below average money you’re probably going to get below average output.

I think he still looks good apart from the yips at times. He's playing less pure wing and kicked 6.4 in his previous 4 matches. Had an interrupted preseason too with injury.

I think it needs to be a focus in the preseason.

Agree on the fight thing. There's a different vibe to this group than what we've had in the recent past... eg as skilled and silky as Nas is, he's a hard nut, determined AF. Boxshall seems to really have a good head on his shoulders. If guys like Wilson can grow in confidence and play with swagger like he did yesterday it will be a beautiful thing.

How good has Hugo's year been? Massive improver. His mindset is going to see him get better and better. Really excited about him.

He's a battler and looks like he's probably gone but his pace and burst are pretty handy weapons and hard to replace.

It can't be a coincidence, it must be part of the recruiting criteria, that personality type, being ultra-competitive and never say die........

Lyon does drill that hard edge in. I remember Freo were a bit of a soft side that all of a sudden grew a real edge when he got there. They ended up a bit campaignery under Ross, Ballantine, Crowley etc. Even guys like Fyfe would knee heads and bump hard.

I think so but Lyon has always demanded it too. He has minimum standards and that army idea of strong as a unit helps them walk a bit taller.

He'd love Garcia, can't remember Lyon playing but reports are that he was a grub that loved the rough stuff. Hugo looks like a shark that smells blood whenever trouble starts.

Yesterday was exactly what it needed to be a loss but looked good and a positive into next year.
Maintain position so we are not decimated further on draft position by carlton
Yes, done without tanking.

The pure joy on the faces of those younger kids when we scored were priceless. Helps us we lost but wouldn’t have worried me had we got up.

TBH I wanted a draw for the lols of maybe playing spoiler, but there's a dirty thing to be below Carlton regardless of how good it might be.

What’s with all the bagging of Trav in this thread? He’s in his first season! Geez give him a chance to get to 50 to 80 games before sticking the boots in!
It’s weird how many people think a player drafted in the first round needs to be immediately good. It’s rare, yet anyone who isn’t immediately good is written off

Boxshall and Dodson are going to be guns. Travaglia on the other hand needs to come on and come on quickly. We are yet to see his dash and midfield qualities.

The other good player which we could have gotten were:

  • Pick 17: Murphy Reid
  • Pick 30: Jobe Shanahan

Could we have drafted Tarau with 8 and split Pick 9 to pick 15/16 and pick 28/29? Anyway, too late to ponder and hope Travaglia comes on and proves the critics wrong.
What is he 8 games in -late bloomer physically that is obvious -

Some young guys will get up to scratch quickly, while others take a few years. Every player on the list will be reviewed, and obviously any strengths and weaknesses will be worked on. Some need strength work, some need aerobic work etc etc, plus a lot depends on their own desire to achieve at top level.

Damn Keeler is a sexy footballer. Just natural, like Hendrix on his strat. Has the potential to be a star.
He played well. I was lucky enough to be there and had just mentioned to somebody that he looks a bit slow and unfit (I still think he does) but he then took a nice mark at half forward and handed off to NAS, then snapped a goal!

I think he will make it. He just need to get lots of clicks in in preseason.
