NO TROLLS Rankine handed a 4 match suspension by the AFL integrity unit for a homophobic slur against opponent

The Crows and the AFL handled it poorly and brought unnecessary attention on to all involved.

The AFL has a duty of care to all players, even the ones who have ****ed up. They should be looking after Quaynor, Rankine AND anyone else effected.

Perhaps a few calls to the media to stop building the QF up as anything more than an important game in the context of this season is needed. All this talk about how hostile the game and crowd will be is not helping.
Yeah, like the AFL doesn’t know how to stoke up a fire for the sake of a few dollars.

The same thing happened Hinkley v Sicily. Fly a plane, $20k fine. Oh, and let’s use it in every promo the next time they played, let’s make some $ out of that too.
But don’t do it again, we’ll fine you. And then make more money out of it.

Isn’t that just an issue with video game servers and the way people talk on them. I used to play more than I do now, but I’ll only actually listen and use my headset if I’m playing with friends as it was always just a cesspool of slurs in general.

Just a bunch of heroes who think they’re funny while hiding behind the anonymity of a keyboard/console.

Homophobia in footy is 100% an issue but I think it’s a separate thing to what goes on in video games.
Yeah I imagine video games, it's more a bunch of tryhard teenage edgelords than genuine hard-core homophobes/racists/sexists/anti-Semites/etc.....

You may think you are entitled to medical information, but you are not!

Once again you have nfi about patient confidentiality which is why Dillon chose his words very carefully.
He did choose them carefully.

He wouldn’t have even been permitted to announce “medical” submissions without permission to do so.

He did. It looks as though someone wanted people to know the medical part but not disclose any further details.

This is why people like Whately are upset about it.

for anyone who hasnt seen the apology video yet.

Obviously very awkward to watch and the timing is pretty awful, this should have been done and dusted BEFORE he went to italy.

I personally think these "apology" videos always appear so orchestrated and carefully written prior to the event that they dont feel genuine.
A Simple "i stuffed up, the AFL has penalized me for it and it is not okay for an AFL player or person in society to use the language i used"

All this for a word.. really. I get it he messed up but sounds like he killed 3 people drink driving.

It's crazy to me that he has to front the media like this. The important thing is that he apologises personally to the impacted individual who he hurt with the offensive comment and his teammates who he let down. But we have this thing in society where we like trying to make people feel even worse and even more broken for their mistake.

He looks like a broken man and that's not great to see. There's no winner out of the situation. Yes he's not the victim but why do we want him to suffer himself even worse.

There were multiple people in this thread who seemed like they wanted a public stoning.

"It’s just a word!" 🌈

That’s what they ALWAYS say... when they’re not the one being hit with it.

Rankine had this word ready to fire in his back pocket, not something you stumble over.

He spoke well today, so that tells me he clearly has a way with words and he can think before he opens his mouth. Unfortunately he said a homophobic slur and he had to pay the consequences, that doesn't mean it has to define him negatively for the rest of his life.

What's worse is the rusted boomers in this thread still complain he's the victim.

He "looks broken"?

Where was that empathy for every kid who hears it from the stands or online and gets reminded that they still don’t belong?

Some of you are more outraged by an apology video than the slur itself.

What does that say about your values?

Silence isn’t neutral and indifference isn’t a virtue.

If your first instinct is to minimise the harm, or cry "overreaction" you’re not defending fairness, you’re defending your own comfort. And deep down you know I'm right but will never admit it here.

Rankines punishment was a 4 match ban, which was a clear statemet from the AFL that it is not acceptable and won't be tolerated in the game.

The ongoing public stoning needs to end now and you don't need to continue bringing up empathy for the gay community to justify this to be ongoing. It's absolutely ridiculous to link all of the societal issues the LGBQT community faces to Rankine and that he somehow has to pay for all of them.

I don't believe Rankine is the victim here, but how much more does he need to be put through to repent? There comes a point where the punishment does not fit the crime and this is where we are.

My values are fine. I was raised well.
I don't know about others but by saying Rankine looks like a broken man can be utterly true without diminishing the hurt of the victim in this case. It's factual with what I see with my two eyeballs from the speech.

As I said, there is no winner in this situation. Both people are hurting- only one of which we have seen briefly publicly. Doesn't diminish the hurt of the victim and isn't intended to take away or make light of that or the impact it could have caused that individual. Both things can be true and to say otherwise would be wrong.

My point is that in society we have this fascination with publicly lynching someone when they make a mistake- the AFL in particular is disgusting how it does this and forces scripted apologies. He deserved his punishment which he got.. he carries guilt and remorse at using the word and causing hurt. He carries guilt that he has let himself and his team down. He misses finals. He forever gets known as having used a homophobic slur. But why lynch him further and parade him in front of the media so we can sit back and see his teary eyes and remorse.. it's sick how society does that and it's also sick how people will come on and try to judge other people and cast stones at their values for simply seeing someone visibly distraught and not liking seeing that be the case. I have a heart and I don't like seeing people distraught.. how bad of me. It's sick how large amounts of society have an eye for an eye mentality where we are not satisfied until we see the perpetrator crushed also.

The apology should stay behind closed doors. We as public do not need to see it. Not to mention it often feels forced, especially in the AFL. It needs to be settled between the two parties and that's where it should end.

I wonder if Adelaide will pick him in the Grand Final team if they make it. This will be interesting to see. I think the AFL planned it this way and are hoping Adelaide lose their next game. This will build the tension leading into the game. Hopefully he can learn from this, but it will be difficult if he feels this way naturally.

Rankine and the club are the ones who have dragged this out. If you're going to do the public apology, us should have been done 2 weeks ago

This
Bit also speak from the heart instead of a orchestrated carefully chosen choice of words.

Reeks of a PR stint more than a sincere apology.

The fact that he clearly read and memorised the apology and did it without a script in front of him showed he put some thought into it. Other players would have just had a bit of paper in front of them, or not done it at all.

If he gave a public apology straight after the event before it had even sunk in, surely that means less?

**** me some people are almost impossible to.pleae on this, which is why I think no public apology should have been made.

When it was coming on TV last night, I said to my wife what would be said and it was nearly word for word.
Written by the media manager, just a copy and paste from all other players stuff ups.
Just once I would like a player to be authentic.

"Im a dick, I was stupid, it really isn't me or how I want to be and I will be better.
There is no place for that shit in this game, or society and I like everyone else, will get these vile types of words out of my vocabulary"

It would have been emailed to him, so he had the whole flight back from Italy to read and remember it.

I think before he fled the country would have been the best time to do it. We've already had a week of Rankine, then a week of Brown, and now that the story is finally died down, its brought back to life because Rankine Never did a to camera apology 2 weeks ago.

I agree, especially when he doesn't really mean it.

How? Maybe they should have done it sooner but maybe he wasn’t in the right frame of mind?

Maybe they had not planned on doing a media conference , none of the players did but the media wouldn’t let it go.

Yeah of course it was memorised, how can you expect a statement like this not to be? Why Does that make it inauthentic?

Some people are incapable of moving on

It’s never enough for some people.

He’s apologised, he got a big punishment. Let it go.
