NO TROLLS Rankine handed a 4 match suspension by the AFL integrity unit for a homophobic slur against opponent

I think those in the community... forgot about Rankine until he did a press conference yesterday.

Remember he had "compelling medical reasons" that reduced his 5 week suspension to 4. So if his medical (mental) reasons were so important they couldn't be ignored, then why is he a week later in front of the cameras after not been able to leave his house for a week? That's after a week holiday in Italy? A lot people in this country, and around the world, have serious mental issues, but don't have the luxury of srill getting paid and then going on holiday in Italy.

But it's good you guys are rallying around Rankine, he really needs the support.
I'll rally around everybody, whether it's Rankine, Quaynor or anyone else, because that's what being a decent human being is, you don't pick and choose who you rally behind and support, you just support everybody because it's the right thing to do.

Rankine deserves the consequences of his actions, does that give me a right to send vitriol his way? No it doesn't, because that would make me an arseh*le, just like anyone sending vitriol Quaynor's way is an arseh*le.

There’s far worse homophobia going around the country and particularly overseas, than the stupid comments of a footballer who has since apologised and been sanctioned for his actions.

Rankine’s slur doesn’t help the cause but it’s a drop in the ocean compared to the actions of some middle-eastern countries and right wing governments.

Jeremy Finlayson got three weeks. Should the afl retroactively suspend him for another one or two weeks to meet your criteria? It was the same act after all.

The classic “but what about the Middle East?” maneuver.

So let me get this right.. because there are countries out there literally executing people, a high-profile AFL player using a slur on national television is now… trivial?

That’s the bar? “Worse things happen elsewhere”?

I thought we were proud to live in a country that sets better standards than regimes we’d never want to emulate. But every time someone says “just a word” or “he’s already suffered” or “at least he’s not Saudi Arabia” we feel like racing to the bottom just to avoid having a hard conversation.

Thousands of young LGBTQI+ fans hear that word in silence and see half the footy world yawn or excuse it, and you're okay with it? That's the distressing part now in this thread?

Regardless, seeing people post comments on Quaynors social media content " i see why rankine did what he did" he is now collateral damage from Rankine. Rankine should cop more , he caused the whole issue!

With Rankine. I just see him as a person thats been disrespectful/discriminative in more than one moment and now hes learned a lesson the hard way. Dont do it

Ironic considering he received similar treatment last year from a fan with a racist connotation
Social media still think Quaynor painted his finger nail which was posted on X by a known BS poster???

Yeah they're online idiots, Quaynor shouldn't be dragged into this.

Yep, there's nothing more to do be said about it I think.

And some received 3 or 4 weeks and another got 6 weeks. Do you see the issue with how the AFL has managed these offence and why the club argue it was very harsh punishment to begin with......

One player received 3 weeks, Rankine should've received 5.

But given that people in our society and in here, still think "this is a just a word" I will be campaigning that they increase it 6 weeks.

I never said it was trivial.

I’m saying you should spend your energy rallying against the far greater acts of homophobia that go overlooked and unpunished daily.

Rankine copped four weeks - including finals - and has been hounded by the media since the news broke. How is that not enough?

I’ve had the hard conversation already. Time to move on.

They are from the old school thought of "whatever is said on the field stays on the field". The punishment should have been a flat 2 weeks and fine for that individual's first offence and if that player does it again then 6 weeks. Hopefully, the AFL change this next year.

This is a false equivalence.

Rankine was the perpetrator of a slur.

Quaynor was the target of that slur (or at least the affected party).

Rallying equally around both without distinction flattens accountability.

Your post implies that “being decent” means treating the person who caused harm and the person harmed exactly the same... which is ethically lazy. It frames neutrality as morality, but that just reinforces the
status quo.

By the way, when you say vitrol what do you mean? Nothing I said here was in malice, it was all on accountability and a fair process, do you think that's vitriolic?

no, but i know your posting and it's rubbish and gross.

But what Rankine for using a homophobic slur was "just a word" and "he's copped too much"... and I'm gross? Ok buddy.

You can also keep disagreeing to 40 of my posts Mr MysteryGuest , it won't stop me from standing up for myself and others in the LGBTQI community who suffer everyday.

you need stop infantilizing the gay community.

You don't speak on behalf of them, vast majority would have moved on weeks ago.
Yeah well I was speaking to the gay community the other day and they said while they had moved on, they have now moved back. They left their backpack you see and had to swing past to pick it up.

yes, you're also a liar. I never said any of those things.

But at what point do you think that he's done enough?

But i don't think you do stand up for the gay community, you infantilize them while using them smokescreen to continue this argument.

Grow up, seriously.

This is trolling now and not appropriate for the subject matter.
Mods?

You are the obvious troll here. You aren't here for any other reason than to enflame the topic by going against someone's views without even discussing anything. Everyone is entitled to voice their views/opinions. But when you start belittling people and telling them to be quiet, you are the troll.

RCAB ( i don't know how to tag people after 18 years of posting hah)

Keep doing you. I find it upstanding and i admire your posts and views. Your humane approach is better than others and their non-empathetic one.

I like Izak Rankine.

I forgive him, too.

Feel free to let me know what you disagree with.

the parts of the post that feel like a strawman.

Most of the people saying to 'move on' are doing so because the story is over, Rankine and has now done two public apologies. How much more is needed?

Some in the media will likely continue to flog the dead horse.

The weird timing is because some in the media won't stop talking about it until Rankine does a media conference.
Could they have done it differently? sure but it's really not that bad, you're just lapping up the media narrative about how the club should have done it.

Go check Mr mystery post history, calling other people liars constantly. Defended Adelaide's position that Rankine self reported and called other people liars for disagreeing with him. When we know Rankine did not self report.

I also had someone responding to one of my posts that it's been vitriolic towards Rankine, but yet haven't received a response if it had been something I said.

I and others in LGBTQI have long suffered, so appreciate your words of support, they mean a lot to me.

Gee you're gonna be busy rallying around everyone.

You must be a literal angel sent from heaven

Honest question - would you 'rally around' a white player who straight up dropped the N bomb on a black player? Because what Rankine said is pretty much the equivalent for gay men.

I might support a focus on educating and helping that person instead of pure punishment, and offering a pathway back if they're genuinely remorseful and understanding of what they did wrong. But I sure as hell wouldn't 'rally around' them and hold them up as some sort of symbol of unfairly-persecuted victims.

Whats crazy is you saying its just a word, when that word discriminates
It is a word. Said to one person.

Rankines life is turned upside down and possibly missing out on a once in a lifetime opportunity when an apology and a 1 week penalty for a first offence would have been plenty. Being offended is a choice.

Good discussion. LOL

Are you actually more upset about Rankines use of words.

Or

The treatment of him through the media?

Strip it all back, go someone for their poor choices, don't go them for something they can't control

Gay - Not a choice

Homophobic - Choice

Edit: Further to that , its actually disturbing you are defending someone using homphobic slurs and thats not your biggest issue. But, the community receiving those slurs can "choose" not to be offended.

More i think about it , your logic is just ridiculous

I have gay friends and I don’t use the slurs myself. But I simply don’t believe throwing the bloke to the wolves is the answer.

Scaring people into doing what you want instead of educating why you shouldn’t never works well. End of the day these punishments are a lose lose
