This seems a very stupid statement.

Well below your usual level 📉

Ryan just kicked 22 goals for the team ranked 17th for inside 50's, 18th for clearances, 18th for contested possessions... Worst team of all time.

This is all the while he had an off year with his goal scoring accuracy as well. Could easily have had another half a dozen snags.

If you don't think he'll improve next year in a more competitive team, be that at West Coast or St Kilda, you've got rocks in your head and should probably delete your account if I'm honest.
I have no doubt he won’t improve on it next year… his career has been in constant decline since his hamstring injury, couple that with the fact he rolls up unfit every pre season and there’s nothing to suggest he will make us regret shipping him out now.

Neale is no risk at all when he's going to cost a packet of twisties.

If he DOESN'T cost that, then we don't pursue it. Simple. We aren't giving up a first rounder FFS, it'll be a late throwaway pick.

The benefit of a 2x Brownlow medalist coming directly from a club with a winning culture will be absolutely huge. Even if he only played 10 games the bonus of him out there on some of our young players would be immeasurable.

Season on field then a couple seasons as coach. Perfect. Replica of Mitchell, only with less of a flog.
Agree with all this.
For some later picks like the Mitchell deal, 3rd round its a no brainer.
He is still 1 of the best players in the AFL at the end of his career.
2 years and if we get 50% of game time would be huge for all the things you mention.
He has been remarkably resilient across his career and 75% of games into an aging player would be the hope, his on field leadership, his 2 x Brownlow medal culture of winning and getting the most out of himself would be the would be huge.

What’s the fair trade for Neale - assuming he was keen/willing to leave?

It'll be a token pick so they can get his salary off their books.

Currently we've got picks 31 and 49 we probably won't even use this year, depending on how our NGA situation plays out.

I'd love him on our list, but from memory he hasn't had a particularly great year when fit though, right?

For someone you constantly slag (among others), his numbers have stacked up reasonably well.

Have St Kilda recruited a new generation of list cloggers or some potential A graders?

It is hard to tell and yet if St Kilda had done nothing this off-season we would be accusing them of a lack of ambition.
So what is the upside for the four players who have already chosen St Kilda, with Sam Flanders another possible acquisition?

And how important is it to keep academy graduate Marcus Windhager?
It is possible to make a case that most or all of St Kilda’s four recruits so far can be an upgrade on the current player whose position they will take.

St Kilda doesn’t need them all to be top 10 AFL players.

With a young core that includes Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera, Mitch Owens, Darcy Wilson, Mattaes Phillipou, Tobie Travaglia, Alix Tauru, Hugh Boxshall and Windhager, most of them need to be key role players who improve the bottom ten every week.

TDK is another thing altogether given they are paying him $1.7m a year.

LIAM RYAN (WEST COAST)

Ryan turns 29 next month but there is every reason to believe he has three good seasons left in him.
He was rated the 199th best player in the comp this year and kicked 22 goals but also 22 behinds and had 12 total misses.

He also played in a side that generated just 46 inside 50s so if he can get some easy ball he should improve that tally.

He’s an upgrade on Lance Collard and potentially Dan Butler but also was in 121 centre bounces this season.

It was the seventh most at West Coast this year, so it gives him an added dimension.

When he was in the centre square the Eagles were in the positive for scoring.

His 23 score assists were also No. 1 at West Coast.

In his best goalkicking season he averaged 1.7 goals (2021) and his best pressuring season (2023) he averaged 3.7 tackles.

St Kilda would love him to combine those numbers in a bumper 2026.
So he missed two thirds of his shots on goal. Good start,
He attended 121 centre bounces… averaging less than one clearance a game…. No that’s not going to help much …
I could say he lead the goal assists because he was always wanting to kick to our leading goal kicker but that might be facetious…

And then you go back 5 seasons and 3 seasons for stats from when next year starts… it proves my point

Yes… and twice on sundays

No. I'm an East Perth fan, but not every Brisbane reject is going to be a star because they're reigning premiers.

By his lofty dual Brownlow standards, no. But you get that when you're 32 and have younger/fitter players taking on more responsibility.

These numbers still dwarf anyone in our pathetic midfield.

Despite him slowing down and his age/injuries he still put up 27D, 13 contested, 6 clearances and close to 4 tackles a game.

Yeh, was concerned about recurring injuries at his age, thought I'd heard something along those lines with his latest finals breakdown. Could be wrong.

He certainly has shown some interest or empathy towards WCE plight and has defended Harley in the past.

Is that a dig?
21 games and a couple of injuries, expect him to be 75% of this over next 2 years with his history of slowing and age as with all players.
Played 17 games or more a season since his 3rd year in the AFL and won a Brownlow in 2023!

Neale has played 21 games this year. It's not like he's Elliot Yeo.

21 games puts him behind only Maric, Hough (22) Baker and Ginbey (23) for West Coast.

Not a dig, more you referring to him as still one of the best players in the AFL when he's had a downturn of a year due to age and injuries. I'm not saying he isn't better than everything on our list, but let's be realistic about whats on offer here.

You're so negative lately hon.

Agree, that's why I have several comments about his history on playing games, realistically get 75% of games from him, his injury history this year is old man injuries so he will most likely slow down more.
Can't see him doing a Kelly 2025 drop off in player impact, competitiveness, training standards, on field leadership, even if he attends reduced midfield minutes and HF role.

I should've known better.

When you have it in for one of our players, and let's face it you do for 99% of them, you just cant give any credit.

You were still calling Waterman a spud when he was AA.

Would be keen only if he it leads to a coaching situation IE Mitchell in 2017.
Can we afford to be this picky? He’s a star and leadership on field would be worth it even if he didn’t want to coach afterwards.

Literally nobody wants to come here and you’d say no to Neale if he didn’t want to coach afterwards?

Id say he was rushed back a week or 2 early leading into the finals.

If you want to talk about shit, let's talk about Campbell Chesser.

Deep down I always knew there was something off about him. In my desperation to fit in with the WCE board clique - chiefly made up of the cool girls HoneyBadger35 & pantskyle - I supported him despite my internal warning signs saying he was probably a sovereign citizen sympathiser. And now his true colours have come to the fore, it's die-hard supporters like me that are left to clean up the mess that Chesser has left behind as he moves onto Carlton where he'll win multiple premierships and Brownlows after I carried him on my shoulders for years.

This is where our decision sits, I think. Not necessarily whether we get a draft pick of value but how drastic do we expect Ryan's drop off to be next year?

If he has a good year and leaves as an FA, even a band 3 compo nets us pick +/-19 (assuming we finish near the bottom). Or he signs on with us and happy days (3 years at $600k should be band 3?).

But if we know his injuries/body are only going to get worse or he lacks motivation, we might get nil for him next year, or worse, give him a 2 year contract and he barely cracks a game.
This also assumes that.....band 1 2 3 etc compo actually exists anymore. I get the sense clubs are angry (no shit Sherlock) about free agency compo picks and would not be surprised at all that as part of "preserving the first round of the draft" already mooted with regards to NGA/FS, FA compo is likely to be excluded from the first round as well, or, abolished all together.
