I'm a fan of the Fiorini pick. I can't see him, Brodie and Drew all playing in the same side and only think one of them will. But it's good because Drew normally gets picked because he has no competition but now he has two to come up against. Its a good problem to have. I think they all fight for 1 spot barring injuries

Drew like a lot of others struggled last year.
Only got games because we had nothing to replace him with.

We've been throwing everything at FA's for years. Just haven't been able to secure any. Particularly last year. Just a shame this year we've hooked one, who is far less valuable than those we chased last year. If we get Fiorini, that would be a boost though.

I remember watching him debut thinking this guy could play. A couple years later watching thinking he's not really progressing, but it's ok he must still only be like 21-22. Nope, he was 27. Now the last couple years he's hit a new level, but he's also far closer to the end than the start of his career and he's probably playing the best footy he'll ever play right now.

For mine I'd say no to Atkins for that reason, just doesn't fit a need. If he was a FA then maybe, but he isn't.

Fiorini as a free agent though makes a lot of sense.

Na, we've made decisions to cull, but we've 100% hurt our depth again. It is absolutely the RIGHT call, but we've definitely been set back another couple steps as we finally started to build the Magpies back up again.

We've effectively culled (The impact that the decisions would have at an SANFL level):
  • Our 2 best SANFL mids through Boak and Hugh Jackson going, Maybe replaced by Fiorini and our 1st pick in the 30's which is probably a net loss in the short term.
  • Effectively our best SANFL player in Finlayson, who'll be replaced by our 3rd round pick.
  • Atkins whose effectively getting replaced by Wehr, which is only really a slight gain.
  • What would be our best 2 half backs in Burton & Williams, probably replaced with a 4th and 5th round picks, a huge loss.
  • An AFL ready ruck in Soldo, we'll likely replace with a project late draft/rookie pick, which will hurt the team throughout the year undoubtedly.
  • and up forward, where we already struggled for small forwards, Rioli our best is gone, McEntee for all his flaws was still at least ready to go, and Charleson has been cleared off. With SPP also out for most of the year, we go in significantly depleted here, with Rioli a huge loss in a trade with a deep rookie pick. McEntee and Charleson aren't huge losses, but again you're replacing them with deep rookie picks.



When you work through it, not only will we be significantly weaker, but it does highlight what I've been saying, that with this deep of a cull, you have to be looking at back filling with some known quantities in a shit draft.

I'd be surprised if we hadn't thrown an offer at Spargo and given the small forward void, I can totally understand why we'd go for Motlop, though we better not trade any 2026 currency or I'll lose my mind.

Surely an out of contact 22yo who is only being offered a 1-year deal post-season is worth peanuts. They clearly don't really want him, but perhaps due to his age and the sunk cost of 60+ games haven't delisted him.

A fairly tokenistic swap of fourth rounders that don't really matter, but they can sell as moving up a few spots, gets it done.

Otherwise he just nominates for the PSD and easily gets to Port.

This day and age you have to do more than just tag.
Those days are gone, he couldn’t make the distance kicking at goal from 40m out.
I’d be seeing what we can get for him this year.
We hold onto him and he has another season like last year he won’t be worth bugger all.
Then posters will be carrying on why is he only worth a 3rd round pick at best.

Noting Wehr and Fiorini are UFA, the value of the other two is basically this

Brodie - 4th rounder (if we get rid of Soldo, whatever pick we get is what I would pass to Freo as they dont want him)

Motlop - early 3rd rounder (I see him as similar value to Lord, out of contract but tbf I see him having higher upside than Lord so if it pushes into late 2nds which ends up in 45ish in this draft I wouldn't be upset).

We honestly shouldn't be paying anything for Brodie. Freo want his contract gone so they should agree to delist him so we can pick him up for free.
