If the example Twomey posted is accurate it could easily be completely out of our hands. You'd need a top 2-3 pick plus another decent first rounder to match if he's bid on at pick 1. All it would take would be the teams with the early picks to refuse to trade and we're shit out of luck.

I'm assuming that example was based on the required points. Picks 2 + 12 is probably gonna be similar to 3 + 11, or 4 + 10 etc.

If the assumption is that we'll need two top 10 picks for Cody, we'll find two top 10 picks. Our first next year will already be in the vicinity, we'll be able to trade future picks in this year, we could bring 2027 picks forward via trade, we could trade a player or two out, we could lose a free agent etc. For all we know, there will still be a "carry-over" mechanism, where if your top two picks total 2000pts, and you needed 3000pts, that you'll lose 1000pts off your first pick the following year etc.

The AFL don't want to make it impossible for a mid table club to get access to a top 5 player. They want to make sure bottom end clubs can get their player without much fuss, mid table clubs have to work for it a bit, and top end clubs have to give up a fair bit to get them.

We'll also probably start seeing academy players in the later first round being drafted by clubs other than the one they're linked to - especially when their club has multiple players to juggle. That's a good thing though - we should be able to draft a GC academy kid after they've snapped up two in the top 10 - and then work to keep them or trade them back to GC a few years later if necessary.

If you can only use 2 picks to match, that likely won't be enough.

Involving THREE first round Carlton picks from 25', 26 & 27' (which includes TDK compo pick currently pick 9) will be plenty enough to melt into two top 15 picks next year. Don't stress, the club will get it right.

The lockout was what worried me the most

I like what the AFL is doing here.

But I hate that we're going to be impacted.

Just in time too :D

It was ok for the Hawks and filth to benefit from the priority pick system in 2005... (and yes I know we did too that year)

But in 2006... it was removed...

Now when we're finally set to benefit on a generational F/S talent... rules have changed again...

Neither should be entertained. Rules were changed.

Not sure that F/S’s should be made so hard to draft.

Every club has the same opportunity bar GCFC & GWS (who should have Academy access in lieu. BL & SS can have restrictions placed on their Academies and others NGA’s)

Personally, prefer a free-for-all and pre-list your picks from F/S & Academies.
I don't disagree but you know the AFL. Blow with the wind. Any small amount of pressure and they cave

So maybe Curnow to GCS for This year's and next year's 1st rounders. Even if the draft pool is shallow, we'll still need those picks for Walker. Better to trade someone who doesn't want to be there for someone who does.

No, I mean involving all those picks (trade/swapping etc) to ensure we have a couple of 2026 picks that are high enough to match a pick 1 bid. We'll be right and Cody is certain to be in Navy but does suck at the draft capital we'll have to spend for the privilege.

It's a bit like paying for the Ferrari worth $1M.

Collingwood paid the equivalent of $100k for access to their Ferrari (Nick). Brisbane & the Dogs similar for theirs (Ashcroft & Darcy).

Unfortunately we'll have to pay $950k for ours...
If it's only 2 picks that can be used, we might end up paying 1.4M for that Ferrari. It costs more to move up the draft order and with a compromised 2027 draft future picks are almost worthless.
