Yes I don’t get this. It’s not really F/S anymore iff other teams can bid or we pay capital to get him . Should be automatic he comes to us. IMO. 🤔
Ashcroft and Daicos boys changed this.

Typical AFL moving the goals when we have our own bonafide gun coming to us.

Cody will be a Blue though and dont stress. 👌👍

New rules will be great for all clubs moving forward. Getting father sons for peanuts has been a joke and I’m all for it tightening up.

We will get Cody and I’d suggest clubs won’t be bidding early on these father sons as it comes back around. There will be a club wide agreement not to pick a father son with a top 5 pick, bet ya. You do it to us, we will do it to you.
The clubs will find a way to work around what the AFL flogs are trying to do

I’d say we will get him for a steal tbh

This will heavily impact our chances of drafting Arli. AFL should fix the loophole with the factories that are the Northern Academies churning out players every single year. F/S are nowhere near the Academies in terms of regularly producing good youngsters.

I mean if he is pick 1 or 2 we SHOULD pay a heavy price. You are getting a star at that pick

We pretty much traded away Pick 12, 14 and did a swap of picks that sent away this years 1st round pick for last years Pick 3. We will find a way to accumulate everything we need even if Cody does go Pick 1. It’s a hefty price to pay but we will pay it.

The AFL would sooner set itself on fire than admit their northern academies are the real issue.

Maybe we don't do that trade if we knew these were going to the rules to draft Cody.

Because the AFL is becoming more and more, and faster, a business based on US sports models.
There is no room for sentiment (although they cleverly spin it that way to keep us all locked in) and it more about the dollars they can generate. The media, particularly SEN, is also locked in on this and sells it for the AFL.

I used to think Dwayne Russell was unbiased and fair, and let anyone have their say, but in recent months he is selling everything the AFL is putting down and disagreeing with callers who call this stuff out.
(Just today playing down the momentum shifting 'non-free' for Elliot's front on contact).
You are 100% right. It is part of the reason I am finding myself less and less interested.

I think the club still would have still done the trade. They were very confident that Jagga Smith is going to be a very good player.

Honestly, I think this affects Cody more than Arli. I think this change heavily incentivises clubs to 'hide away' their incoming talent. The difference in price for a top 5 pick and a later first rounder under this system is colossal. No matter how obvious talent is, a club wont pay a top 5 pick for someone they last saw play against their peers in the u16s.

I was thinking along the same lines HCJ. It would be mutually beneficial if Clubs could colloborate and agree to not bid on each others F/S prospect in say the Top 10 picks.

It's not perfect but could work if most clubs have F/S coming through at some stage.

Yeah but we will be paying through our teeth to get him that kind of defeats the purpose of the father/son romance. So we'll effectively have to have find a way to secure 2 first round draft picks to pick him up. How is that any different than trying to trade in an A grader from another team?

Is it the same for NGA and Academy picks?

One thing I don’t get is say we want to use our 2027 first rounder as well as 2026 first rounder for Cody to match the points what value is allocated to the 2027 first rounder?

How can the AFL target the father son rule and completely ignore the elephant in the room which is free agency?

Free agency is the thing which is keeping the better teams up the top and the lesser teams down the bottom.

The AFL's equalisation system is completely broken, we know that. I don't think father son rule has much to do with it.

If the AFL want to make changes they should raise the draft age by a year and get rid of free agency. That is your elephant in the room, that is your starting point. That should come well before messing with the father son rule.

Raising the draft age means players get to spend a year in the real world, which puts things in perspective for them and would help them grow up, a lot. For this generation this is important. It also makes the drafting of players more accurate as you get a better take of what they will turn out as. It also takes a lot of players off lists who are not AFL ready which strengthens the competition as a whole and allows clubs to manage injuries etc a lot better.

Free agency is something top sides have completely hijacked. Geelong, Collingwood, Hawthorn and others, the better operators, the destination clubs gain a huge advantage of it. It completely goes against what the draft is supposed to stand for.
How have top sides totally hijacked free agency? Tell me what free agents Geelong has pillaged from other clubs, were these free agents going from a bottom club to a top one? Those big names of Sam Blease, Rivers, S Selwood, or do you men the delisted free agents like Stengle who no one else wanted or Martin who we threw away? Isaac Smith is the only decent gree agent Geelong have got.

What’s Hawthorns free agency history that you feel has hijacked the system? Frawley and Battle? Did you see what they paid for Battle?

Collingwood free agents? Chris Mayne, Daniel Wells, Dan Mcstay or Perryman, which of these make a mockery of the system? Mcstay and Perryman left strong clubs, not cellar dwellers.

And this is the elephant in the room. This is why equalisation is totally broken in the AFL.

It's the same 5 or 6 teams winning the premiership and playing in the grand final every year and that's not father sons doing that.

Going after the father son rule is just a smokescreen to hide said elephant. It's a distraction.
How many of the 50 odd free agents do you think have won a premiership?

If we get to keep the deficit option we really shouldn't have any issues matching anything that's not pick 1.

Pick 2 the equivalent of 10+11 and if we really needed to make things happen that should be easily doable.

If the 10% discount and the deficit remain we'll be laughing so long as we don't finish top 8 (which is unlikely imo)

We pretty much just need him not getting picked at 1 and we will be fine
Cochrane is the standout player by a fair margin so we should be safe on that front.. Port however..

I think this just opens up the mental health card, kids tanking interviews, teams tanking because of the sliding scale... It's going to be interesting.
