There’s a reason why you are not giving examples, just about all players who are a year or two away from free agency are being traded, list them.

Bailey Smith was seen by so many here as a massive risk, has mental health issues, has behavioural issues, talk of substance abuse and was out of contract, he wasn’t traded as a pre agent either.
The reason is that I can not be bothered. Geelong don't have as many in their side currently, it's fairly well balanced. Their last premiership side from memory was a different story. pre agent is a good term.

Good result for us and Cody..
We'll pay a premium, but he projects to be a top tier talent..
Moving forward though.. this may make it easier for a Northern Academy gun player to get to us (or another Melbourne based club) in the future, if the Northern clubs have a number of Academy players. They won't be able to get them all..
But this was the desired outcome with GCFC drafting their own to stall the “go-home factor” and poaching from a non-football state team who were failing to attract and keep their talent.

Now the VIC teams don’t like it…uproar!

It should be left alone.

I suspect the changes to the bidding system will spark a wave of unofficial “alliances” between clubs with something to lose. Think Carlton, Port and Essendon quietly agreeing not to drop early bids on each other’s prospects (or on Syd/GWS/GC/Bris Academy kids) and they return the favour.

On top of that, we’ll probably see plenty of trade deals with unspoken conditions attached: an implied understanding that part of the exchange is, “don’t bid on our players”.
I frickin’ hope so.
Everyone bar STK (and the likes of GEE & Freo who have voiced their issues).

I guess this means they are taking away, or at least strongly limiting, the ability to go into a points deficit? Gotta feel for the list management teams right now who probably have 1000000 questions about this system that the AFL haven't figured out yet.

But we know it won't.

The odds of him going #1 are very low historically and if he goes 2 or below we should have no issues matching it with two mid range firsts.

Pick 2 without accounting for a potential discount if it remains or the deficit rule would be pick 10 + pick 11. Hardly a concern.

Yeah I know, the clubs would want to steer clear from shit like bidding at pick #1 unless they want it to come back around when it's their turn.

But still, just proving a point here... it is a dumb addition and tbh would not put it past the Tigers if they were in the position...

He says he was traded a year before becoming a free agent purely because he was to become a free agent.

Whether it happens one year before or not does not matter, free agency is the cause.
Brian Lake has to approve being traded and where he’s traded to, with the Dogs wanting to get the offer from Hawthorn instead of risking crap compensation.

So if people are complaining that free agency is killing equalisation, but then referencing several examples of clubs actually not getting players for free and needing to trade for them, it doesn’t really make sense.

Geelong will go into this GF with two free agents on the list, both of which were DFAs

Brisbane will have none.

If the Pies got in, they would have 3, with two being DFAs

The idea that the top clubs have used free agency to stay at the top and win premierships is a cop out

Obviously we're getting screwed again

FMD, absolute morons, simply just take the discount away easily fixed, club must hold a pick in the round of draftees availability round, then accumulate the remaining required draft points through multiple options being club/future draft points trade outs/ins…

I was expecting much more from Greg Swan, a person who is apparently held in high regard across his career within different systems, it seems they are overreacting precisely in a way that the AFL has and continues to do with all major rules & matters relating to the game…

You’d think with the proposed F/S draft changes any Charlie deal would have to involve securing a future first in any package.
The proposed changes will make it harder for a Top 6 team to match the bid within Top 6 picks - while it would be nice to think we are going to finish Top 6 next season we probably won’t worry about getting in an extra pick for matching Walker until trade period next season. As things stand our future first second and third would be enough for Walker. We also have 2027 and 2028 picks we can use next season.

1, We use our TDK compo to trade into the first round next year.

2, we then package that pick PLUS our own 2026 first round pick PLUS our 2027 first round pick into a couple of high end 2026 first round picks.

In summary, we spin THREE first round picks into TWO Top 15 picks.

It doesn’t HAVE to involve Charlie.

Might require some minor bits and pieces to sort outside of that but Austin will get it done. Relax man!

(NB: Where it will get tricky is having sufficient draft capital in the 2nd, 3rd & 4th rounds to secure the likes of Dean, Ison, Chesser, Khamis & Jiath).

So Cody essentially costs us 3 first round picks LLLOOOOLLLL
